Philip Seymour Hoffman - 02/02/14 08:16 PM

The needle was sticking in his arm?

Sounds like suicide or a hot shot

Re: Philip Seymour Hoffman - 02/02/14 08:33 PM

I don't think it was a suicide. Most likely just a batch of stronger then usual H or maybe it was that fenatyl stuff again.

I read in one of the local papers here there was a string of od's a few years ago connected to people shooting up fenatyl thinking it was heroin.

Crazy part is i bet all the junkies in NYC are now looking for the same shit Hoffman died from.....thinking it's strong good H.

Hoffman has been in a lot of pretty good movies over the years. Always liked him as Lester Bangs in Almost Famous among other roles he's played.

If you go on youtube and watch the episode of Drugs Inc.( from NatGeo) one of the junkies (I believe his name was Matthew) says this almost exactly. Maybe instead of calling their stuff things like 'da bomb' or superman, they can call their next batch 'Hoffman'.

Really sad stuff frown . Incredible actor, no doubt one of the best of his generation. He was amazing in Capote, 25th Hour,T he Talented Mr. Ripley and as Giancarlo mentioned Almost Famous. For me he will always be remembered for his performances in Paul Thomas Anderson films, Boogie Nights,Magnolia,Punch Drunk Love and The Master. I don't have any interest in any celebrities personal lives, so i didn't have a clue that he was a junkie.

Re: Philip Seymour Hoffman - 02/02/14 10:43 PM

Here's a Lester Bangs scene, and a comprison between the real Capote and Hoffmans top class imitation of him. The real Capote clip is boring but it's just to show how well Hoffman played him.

Re: Philip Seymour Hoffman - 02/02/14 10:54 PM

Hoffmans most frequent collabrator, Paul Thomas Anderson is making an adaptation of Thomas Pynchons, Inherent Vice this year, the first filmed version of one of Pynchons novels. Coincidentally it's only the 2nd of PTA'S 7 movies that Hoffman wasn't cast in after There Will Be Blood. Which means that Hoffmans last film will be that crappy Hunger Games sequel rolleyes

Re: Philip Seymour Hoffman - 02/02/14 11:23 PM

This really sucks. He was one of the best actors working today.

Yeah, he was one of my favorite actors working yesterday.

I think he got out of rehab maybe last year. I remember reading that somewhere.

Boogie Nights...lol. That scene was pretty funny.

I also liked "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead". But he's been in many good movies over the years.

Same here, saw him with his kids at a film festival over the holidays in SOHO. Shame he went out like this, RIP.

Re: Philip Seymour Hoffman - 02/03/14 12:03 AM

I was really surprised that Hoffman died this way since I never knew of his past drug history. Very sad that he was off the stuff for 20+ years and one slip up pretty much cost his life.

What's even more sad if it's true, is that the news might have leaked this before the family was informed.

StLguy...in one of the articles it said they found packets of heroin stamped with "Ace of Spades".

I bet there are numerous junkies in NYC and the surrounding areas asking for it by name now.

How you doing Dapper? Hopefully you begin posting regularly again, if you have the time of course.

This article summarizes the mood his death has caused imo, it also shows you a brief portrait of his career, from Capote,The Big Lebowski,Moneyball and The Talented Mr Ripley.

Re: Philip Seymour Hoffman - 02/03/14 03:14 AM

Amazing. Bon jovi already has a tribute out. Just found the lyrics to the chorus:

Shot in th arm
Cause you're so lame
You gave drugs
A bad name

Maybe this too hArsh, but I can't get myself to feel sorry for Hollywood junkies. I work three jobs to get by and this asshole had everything and just 'needed to escape'. Well he escaped alright, so fuck him, river Phoenix, Heath DEADger, etc

Maybe instead of referring to him by his lengthy name we can just start calling him Motörhead

Re: Philip Seymour Hoffman - 02/03/14 10:11 AM

Nice Eulogy STLguy. In "Before the Devil Knows Your Dead" his character was a heroin user/addict. Has anyone seen the movie Candy with Heath Ledger?

My father is a retired pharmacist and he told my brother and I a story about one of the younger guys he worked with who he suspected was using. My dad found the young guy nodded off with a needle stuck in his arm and fentanyl very close by. He lost his job and his pharmacy license which I think takes up to 5 years to get.

First of all, it's good to see you posting, Dap. I know your reasons for staying away, but you can still send a guy a pm once in awhile wink.

Now on to Hoffman. Do you remember my building on West 8th Street where I offered you the apartment awhile back?

Now given the proximity of the building to Washington Square Park, and knowing the city as you do, it will come as no surprise for you to hear that I've seen Hoffman in the park with his son at least two or three times. Cute, happy kid with long shaggy hair, just like his father. So I feel terrible for the kids and for their mother. I really do. But it's just getting harder and harder for me to sympathize with Hollywood types who do this to themselves.

Now addiction is an awful thing, but he had the money for the best rehabs available to man. On a snowy day like this there are about 400 people at Bellevue or Saint Barnabas waiting for a bed to detox in. And it's gonna be a painful wait for them. Not so for people like Hoffman and Whitney Houston. They didn't WANT to sober up. And now they're dead.

Re: Philip Seymour Hoffman - 02/03/14 05:23 PM

PB you still in NY or are you posting from the beach in Florida?

PB you have buildings in Manhattan? Sweet!

Do you have to deal with a lot of red tape and that section 8 stuff?

About Hoffman....it's a real shame. Very talented guy, he'll be missed. Unfortunately i've lost a few friends to that shit over the years...good guys that just got into the wrong shit. Never did the stuff myself so i really don't know what the attraction is but if it's like most drugs your always chasing that first high.

RIP P.S.H.

Re: Philip Seymour Hoffman - 02/03/14 05:31 PM

If what the press is reporting is true it's a pretty sad way to go out. Sitting only in your underwear in the bathroon with the needle still in your arm.....just sad. Must of been potent dope to do it that quickly.....he didn't even take the needle out.

Either strong dope or that fentanyl stuff again. I read its many times as strong as heroin and it's caused many deaths from people shooting it up thinking it was heroin. There was an epidemic of deaths from that crap around here in south jersey a few years ago.

That woman bounty hunter from L.A....Domino died from fentanyl years ago. They made that movie Domino based on her life. Mickey Rourke was in it.

Did someone put you up to that because of the snow? lol

Because we're leaving on the red-eye late tomorrow night (Mrs. Pizza can't fly during the day because she gets migraines). We're a bit late this year because we had a few things going on up here. But I hope to stay uninterrupted until at least Easter week this year. But I always say that, and something always brings me back at least once or twice ohwell.

Two in the Bronx, one in Astoria, and in the Village, just off MacDougal and West 8th Streets. That's where I offered our pal Dapper a unit. But he wasn't ready yet. Hopefully soon smile.

It's not an issue in Greenwich Village today because the rents are so high (and so are my expenses, so don't go counting my money lol). But in Queens and the Bronx we literally have no choice. It's a necessary evil.

He was but it was quite a small role. He was in a few funny scenes

A big loss. He was an exceptionally fine actor. His Capote was incredible, but every role he played was excellent--or better.

Re: Philip Seymour Hoffman - 02/04/14 06:21 PM

I don't watch a lot of movies, but I was a fan of his. He was outstanding in Capote, and had a mind-boggling range of creating characters. I first became a fan when I saw him in Boogie Nights. This is a terrible and senseless loss.

Some great roles from PSH that stand out in my mind are Boogie Nights, The Big Lebowski, Almost Famous, Along Came Polly.. He was a great actor. RIP.

Re: Philip Seymour Hoffman - 02/04/14 08:37 PM

Agreed. You won´t find a better character actor than Hoffman, at least not among those who are active today. In many of his films he often played spineless and shady characters and that´s perhaps why I never found him particularly likeable. He played those kind of roles to perfection, though.

RIP PSH.

AP sources: Hoffman probe tip leads to 4 arrests

POSTED: Wednesday, February 5, 2014, 10:58 AM
NEW YORK (AP) - Four people were taken into custody on drug charges after police investigating the death of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman executed search warrants at several New York City apartments, two people with knowledge of the investigation said Wednesday.

A confidential source provided a tip that the suspects may have supplied Hoffman drugs, according to the people, who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because investigators have not obtained evidence to corroborate the reported connection.

Police say undisclosed quantities of heroin and marijuana were found Tuesday night in the three apartments in a lower Manhattan building. The four suspects - three of whom live in the building - face charges of criminal possession of a controlled substance. Two also face charges of criminal use of drug paraphernalia.

Hoffman was found dead over the weekend in his Greenwich Village apartment with a syringe in his arm.

The NYPD's intensive effort to determine the source of the drugs in an apparent accidental overdose is unusual. Courts have found that under state law, drug dealers cannot be held liable for a customer's death.

A police official said Tuesday that heroin recovered at the Oscar-winning actor's apartment after he was found dead tested negative for the powerful additive fentanyl.

Samples taken from Hoffman's apartment didn't contain the potent synthetic morphine, which is added to intensify the high and has been linked to 22 suspected overdose deaths in western Pennsylvania, said the official, who wasn't authorized to talk about the evidence and insisted on anonymity.

Investigators also determined that the "Capote" star made six ATM transactions for a total of $1,200 inside a supermarket near his home the day before his death, law enforcement officials said Tuesday. They've been piecing together his final hours using video surveillance to determine his whereabouts.

The 46-year-old was found dead in his bathroom Sunday. His door was double-locked when his body was found around 11:30 a.m. by his assistant and a friend, law enforcement officials have said.

Besides the bank records, investigators discovered buprenorphine, a drug used to treat heroin addiction, at Hoffman's apartment and are examining a computer and two iPads found at the scene for clues, two law enforcement officials said.

Police have said the medical examiner's ruling on his cause of death will determine whether there is any criminality but they suspect it was an overdose. No official determination has been made yet.

More than 50 small plastic envelopes of heroin were recovered in Hoffman's apartment along with syringes, a charred spoon and various prescription medications, including a blood pressure drug and a muscle relaxant, law enforcement officials have said.

Some of the packets were variously stamped with the ace of hearts and others with the ace of spades, they said.

Addiction specialist Dr. Louis Baxter, a former president of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, said addicts, especially those who have built up high tolerances, can use as much as two bundles of heroin, or about two dozen packets, per day.

"Addicts with financial means will actually stockpile their drug," he said. "Someone who has developed tolerance, who is seeking to develop a high, may need to inject every two hours or so."

The Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home, which has orchestrated the funerals for celebrities including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and James Cagney, said Hoffman's family has requested a private funeral. It will be held Friday.

RIP.

I was surprised to learn he was such a respected actor.

To me, he was the character in "Along Came Polly", who introduced me to the word "shart".

Re: Philip Seymour Hoffman - 02/05/14 07:50 PM

He was actually a pretty darn good actor. He had his funny roles like LittleMan said in "Along Came Polly", But he could also be that character that you wanted to see dead like when he played the reporter in "Red Dragon". He was very good at what he did and I hope he rests in peace.

I remember the place, and am a regular at Wash Sq Park. Particularly cause of its close proximity to NYU Steinhardt (on Stuyvesant and E.9th) where I have dated/been dating a few dancers. The park is a great place to take a girl for some nice romantic kissing especially when its nice out.
