Ray Donovan - 07/24/13 05:46 AM

So I got into this show pretty recently. It's about a transplant family from Southie (with criminal predilections) living in the LA/Hollywood area. They're a pretty dysfunctional bunch, the least of which is the titled lead character, who is a "fier" for the Hollywood elite. Doing freelance dirty work. Shit hits the fan when their abrasive father gets out of the joint after a 20 year bid.

They put the whole Pilot episode on the Youtubes too:

It's pretty good.

I've watched 3 episodes of this show. While there are parts that sometimes peak my interest, there are many more parts that are just plain boring which has caused me to lose overall interest in this show.

This show is so frustrating. It's just a big cocktease, they never fully explore anything, there is never any pay off to anything. I'm losing my patience with it.

I agree with some of the flaws you guys mentioned. But John Voight as Mickey makes this show--alternatively menacing, charming, funny, scumbag.

Voight was at a rally for the 19 fallen firefighters in my hometown last Sunday. I was at the rally but missed him. Too bad--I'd have asked him if he had any advice for my grandson. lol

John Voight is the show. Ray is annoying. The guy is always makign some guy pay for disrespecting him. Its annoying, he talks on the phone about dead bodies. If the feds were on him hed be doing life. So unrealistic.
I like the Voight Scenes and his sons who work at the gym. The one with parkinsons is cool.
I just think this show had better get going or it will be off the air in 2 seasons.

I saw it, they seem to have miscast a lot of actors as Irish. Liev Schreiber is very non-Irish looking, as are the 2 brothers, especially one who is boxing trainer.

Yes lets talk about the Irishness of the show,

I'm of Irish heritage and I like to think that I was a plastic paddy way before it was considered cool by Hollywood.

I gotta say I'm getting tired of the Irish gangster films. The characters are stockpile caricatures that hardly bring anything new to the table.

Every Irish gangster film/tv show in the past 15 years has had a Whitey Bulger character and the same old 'Southie Project' stereotypes.

Booooooooooooooring.

If you want worth while Irish gangster media, ignore The Departed and go watch Monument Ave. It's wicked cool.

Also, before anyone says it, yes I've seen State of Grace and I love it.

Seems to me that the Ray Donovan character is somewhat based on former P.I. to the stars Anthony Pellicano who i believe is still in prison. Ray takes care of all the problems of the rich and famous and will do whatever it takes to get them off the hook, just like Pellicano used to.

Mickey is the best, he keeps the show interesting IMHO.

BTW, the shows executive producer Bryan Zuriff just pleaded guilty to running a gambling operation tied to the Russian Mafia. The article said he faces up to 5 years.

Incidentally, an executive producer (Bryan Zuriff) of this show just pleaded guilty in that Russian mob gambling case.

Tsk tsk IvyLeague, not reading Giancarlo's full comment.

Last night's episode was not so good. Ending line by wife was cliché. Even Jon Voight was boring, he is usually best reason to watch the show.

Re: Ray Donovan - 07/31/13 07:59 PM

...but he got off the two best lines of the episode: "Last time I was in a bank I was wearing a stocking over my face," and "$50 won't even buy you a blowjob anymore." lol

Re: Ray Donovan - 07/31/13 10:18 PM

I liked what Mickey said to his grandson a couple of weeks ago.

Mickey: Conor, you a fag?

Conor: I don't think so.

Mickey: I met some stand up fags in prison. Good guys. Tough guys. If one of your little friends wants to give you a blow job, that's fine. A mouth is a mouth. But don't let them fuck you in that ass. That's how you get sick.

Conor: Thanks Grandpa. lol

I think it is a damn good show.

Re: Ray Donovan - 05/19/14 10:21 PM

I watch it all. Jon Voight is great in it he won an Emmy for his role in it. He reminds me of a real old time street guy.

The last 4 or 5'shows were very good. Especially Voight and his one time friend a whitey Bolger type character. He digs black women not white women. But in a pinch he will screw one. That white women story line was great. Check it out.

The sons Voight kids not as interesting as the father.

There is a guy that works for ray a ex Masad guy he is good. He was the actor that played tony Montana's best friend in scarface

Seems to me as if they tied up a lot of stories in the final episode--as if they could end the series as is without another season. I sure hope I'm wrong.

That killing of cookie was classic....and leaving the money...i hope next season that they go back to some more of getting stars and athletes out of trouble or covering things up that was great part of the show

I gave this show a second shot by watching the first season on demand. Boy am I glad that I did. Then I watched the entire second season.

Voight is fantastic in his role as Mickey!

Is it me, or is this the IRISH version of The Sopranos?

Ray has his mental issues as well as personal issues with those around him just like Tony did.

Abby is Carmela reincarnated. She has a love / hate relationship with Ray but when push comes to shove family comes first. Not to mention that like Carmela she loves Ray again after he buys her something!

Bridget, just like Meadow, does her thing and is very like her father Ray in many ways and like Meadow she knows exactly what her father is about.

Conor is a marmaluke....clueless in many ways, just as AJ was.

Mickey.....well he is a thorn in Rays side. Makes Ray lose all control just like Livia did to Tony!

Avi is Ray's Furio.

Yes, the IRSIH version of the Sopranos! lol

Can't wait for next season. So glad that I gave it a second chance. Great show!
