Swearing/Cursing in films???

Was wondering what peoples opinions are with regards to swearing/cursing in films?

Is it needed?
Does it give it that extra edge?
When did swearing/cursing first enter popular films?

I understand with Crime films/programes etc but with comedies im not so sure..

I'm only asking as i was watching a 15 rated film and there was cursing every other word and was thinking if if was needed..

Maybe because I am older I don't think cursing in comedies are fun. I don't particarily like cursing in general. I hate cursing in front of women. My youngest son tends to do that.

I was in my foot doctor over the weekend. Guy and his girl friend is there and he is doing it in a waiting room that had women in it. Finally I told him to stop it their women here and your girl friends here. He stopped but had to be reminded.

In mob movies and in mob life I expect it. It is done mostly to make your point heard. !!!!!!!!!!!

If me and the g/f are watching a film and there is lots of wearing in it, we find ourselves switching if off because of the swearing and i watch it on my own..

I guess this is why she can't watch The Sopranos and other programmes i like because of this. Must be a women thing..

She should stick to her chick flicks..

When the sopranos started for the first three years I had a soprano party at my house on the opening show. I only invited street friends to it. Could not invite my soccer friends because if one of them made a mistake and said the wrong thing. Things could get out of hand fast.

I had it catered and my wife would go out with her friends. Mainly because she hated those guys, and there were plenty of cursing.

I posted somewhere about my little parties. My advice to people who also did it was don't start eating to early or you might find yourself in the bathroom taking a dump while show was going on

I've seen great movies without cursing. And I've seen them without it.

Its not that big of a deal. But R-rated movies are really rare these days, especially "popcorn" R-rated movies since unless they're comedies, they tend to bomb it seems.

I dont mind cursing in flims, doesnt really matter to me. I am more concerned with the quality of the film and if cursing helps make the film better than so be it.

I am not against cursing in movies. It all depends on the movie/show. Can it be overdone? I think so. Off the top of my head, Scarface comes to mind. I was so surprised when I saw it (years ago). Every other word in the dialogue was "F**K."

Or, take The Sopranos. They kind of overdid the bad language too IMHO. Then again, on the other hand, for a while they were showing episodes of The Sopranos on regular broadcast channels and of course they had to clean-up the language.

I had to laugh at Tony Soprano saying something like oh "gosh darn" (don't remember exactly, but you get my drift.) Not to say I was disappointed that there was no swearing but it wasn't realistic to the character.

I guess, bottom line, it all depends.

There are many Board members (and I'm one of them) who appreciate the great films of the 30s through the 50s and their great stars. How did those films and actors become great without swearing in the films? You may have read about the controversy over Rhett Butler's "... I don't give a damn." in Gone With The Wind.

Oh yea Oli, though GWTW was released way before my time, I remember my father telling me of the big deal that line was. Probably why it became so famous.

I think swearing in films/TV shows now is a given and it becomes natural to us.

Goodfellas set the record for the most F words(300) at the time and that's my favourite film..

In films, i really could care less, i dont even notice it anymore. In front of women and children, i agree with Richie. I still dont curse in front of women family members like my mother, aunt, etc... I never do, i could if i wanted to, but i dont out of respect. Even tho my mother when shes just in the house cusses like a sailor.... Lol shes watched more soprano episodes than i have Haha.

Want to see a movie with a lot of cursing? See the movie "joe" with Peter Boyle. I remember laughing because their was so much cursing in that movie

Swearing in films is like violence in films: if it fits the plot and is used "as appropriate," no problem. "Goodfellas" is a good example. If it's gratuitous (as the use of "f-bombs" in standup "comedy" shows on cable), I don't like it.

I agree that the gratuitous use of f bombs, n bombs or anything else is neither funny nor appropriate. That said, however, sometimes the censorship we endure is worse than the actual use of certain words. What comes to mind immediately is the line in the Godfather cleaned up for television in which Sonny announces he doesn't want Michael coming out of the bathroom with "a stick" in his hands.

And there's always the annoying, sanitized line: "Forget You!"

It doesn't bother me when it's in a movie or show. What bothers/amuses me is when the curse words are replaced with nonsense words for TV. My friend was greatly entertained with watching Office Space on TBS because, as she said, the most commonly used replacements were "hobgoblins" and "fudge crackers."

Joe Pesci is a natural with his use of the F. I'm funny how? Like a clown...... without the Fs, that scene is wasted.

I wonder who holds the record for career Fs in the movies. Pesci might have it. I watched part of "Raging Bull" the other day. I hadn't seen it in many years. I was surprised how many Fs were in Pesci's dialogue.

Swearing doesn't bother me at all. I've learned to control it myself also, I don't swear at my mother or grandmother, others are there to be sweared at

1995 movie Casino had a "fuck" word count of 398.

It doesn't really offend be but I think they have gone overboard. I like to watch old classic movies and there is little or no swearing and they are every bit as good. I really think Joe Peschi went overboard in Casino.

Casino held the record for the movie that uses the word fuck the most it's now 5th, it's not surprising what's number 1 now

Yeah it's very unnecessary. I don't mind it if it's the bad guys but if it's the good and professional guys it really bothers me.

My dad said back in 1970s he saw Vincent price and he said that he never understood why people swear so much in films. No one ever talks like that. Well that was 1970.

Now after years and years of films and films of +100 f-words people do talk like that today.
