Underrated Movies that you Love?!!! - 10/02/12 01:58 PM

Ok name some movies which get little attention but you have in your top 10 etc. A movie I have in my top 3 favorites is the 1996 Movie "Swingers" with Vince Vaughn and John Favreau, can't really explain why but must of seen this movie 20 times. Just an easy watch and I can emphasise with the characters, good soundtrack also!

I wouldn't call SWINGERS underrated, considering it launched both mens' careers and generally considered terrific 1990s pop culture capsule. (Shit Spielberg casted Vaughn in LOST WORLD after he saw SWINGERS.)

One I would include was DAYBREAKERS with Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe, which because it was a slick, entertaining horror movie tanked in theatres. (People want their safe, boring horror movies that just don't try.)

Anyway it had a novel concept: A global population now mostly vampires, what are the implications in society and technological for such a demographic shift? Rather intelligent, yet very watchable slick no plodding genre entertainment that reminds one of John Carpenter.

Yeah Swingers is rated good and did launch careers but its mostly forgotten now by today's generation compared to other 90s comedies. Most guys I know my age (24) haven't even heard of it.

I've heard of Swingers i haven't seen it though i might buy it though because i've heard it was good off friends .

A Martin Scorcese movie i think is underrated is The King Of Comedy i saw it for the first time lasty year before this i'd never heard of it and didn't even know it was a Scorcese movie till my dad told me a few weeks later . I'll come up with others later i can't really think right now.

Most of those guys you know probably never heard of Bergman's classic THE SEVENTH SEAL. Does that make that one underrated too?

But from your context, I suppose SWINGERS would be considered "underrated" even if I stil don't think it's underrated by general definition.

If we're talking Vaughn, underrated entry of his would be RETURN TO PARADISE. If we're talking Favreau, I would suggest maybe a movie he directed in ZATHURA, which despite good reviews tanked financially.

The Pope of Greenwich Village. If you were an Italian kid growing up in NY during a certain period, this movie nails it.

just rewatched the original 1978 dawn of the dead, and while the zombies are absolutly terrible by modern day walkind dead standards, the storyline/plot about holding up in an abandoned mall were well done. they made a remake in 2005 with ving rames which was pretty good as well, but the original is a must see for any true fan of the zombie genre!

My vote for the most underrated great movie is "True Confessions," with Robert DeNiro and Robert Duvall playing brothers (one an ambitious Monsignor, the other a crooked police detective) involved in a murder case. Duvall's greatest performance, but everyone else in the cast, including Charles Durning, Kenneth Macmillan and Rose Gregorio, are just as good. Brilliant!

For Duvall, I'd say it was Tender Mercies.

One of my favorite movies (and very underrated IMHO) is "Thirteen Days." It is about how the JFK administration handled the Cuban Missile Crisis with the Soviets in October 1962. The thumbnail sketch is that U.S. spyplanes photographed evidence that Cuba had offensive nuclear weapons, which posed a grave threat to America. Other than Kevin Costner playing JFK advisor Kenny O'Donnell, the film does not have a ton of big name actors. But it is well-written, shows the time period accurately, and is a gripping story of how close the U.S. came to a nuclear war with the Soviets.

I would list "Heat" as another of my underrated/under appreciated films. Michael Mann made an excellent crime story following two characters: protagonist Vincent Hanna (Pacino) chasing career criminal Neil Macauley (DeNiro). Hanna is a dedicated detective who is frustrated at the elusiveness of Macauley and his crew (including Val Kilmer & Tom Sizemore), who take on big paying scores. The movie culminates in a broad daylight bank robbery of $8 million dollars. Along the way Macauley gets double crossed by a crooked investor.

The plot has many levels. There are also some actors in roles before they became really famous, including Natalie Portman and Dennis Haybert.

The Swimmer (1968) with Burt Lancaster. Very underrated when first released, now it's looked upon with a lot more respect. Don't want to give away too much of the plot - and especially the ending - but afterward, you may just want to see the whole film again to see the foreshadowing leading up to the final scene. Actually has Joan Rivers in a small dramatic role.

Lemora - A Child's Tale of the Supernatural. A strange and haunting very low-budget film from 1973 starring the young (and ultimately tragic) actress Cheryl "Rainbeaux" Smith. It now has a well-deserved cult following, and I understand it is available on DVD. A very strange vampire film, to say the least.

The Ruling Class (1972) with Peter O'Toole was not nearly as well received as it should have been, when first released in the US. O'Toole, who owned the rights to this incredibly bizarre, satirical British play, took no salary for playing the lead. He was also nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award. Certainly one of the strangest films I've ever seen, and one of my all-time favorites. Great cast, too. Incredible dialogue, starting with a jaw-dropping prologue involving cross-dressing and autoerotic asphyxiation (see photo) that sets up the story. The ending will grab you by the innards and not let go. Now, it's considered a near-classic, and rightfully so. See this one!

Those are just three off the top of my balding head; I may post more as I think of them.

Blood thirsty old pisspot Sam Peckinpah did an absolute gem of a WWII movie called CROSS OF IRON. It was so good i could even forgive James Coburn being cast as a German soldier (albeit a reluctant, worldy wise one)

How about 'Across 110th Street?' I always thought this was a very underrated movie. They used to have it up on Youtube but this is worth watching for the opening sequence and Bobby Womack's title track alone:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxCsIX6iU5o

A lot of under rated movies but I can't remember any of them. It's bad to be old.

A like exposed the grande art. About a photographer in brazil who was stabbed and his girl fried raped. He photographed a guy in a knife fight before that and warned him about a guy behind him. Hermes was an expert in knife fighting.

He finds Hermes and asks him to teach him the grande arte of knife fighting.

A freaking good movie that happens to be on netflex.

Sean the Anthony Quinn movie I saw it when it was first released I liked it. Across 110 street Anthony franciosa I thought was a pretty good actor. He was also in the movie where Pacino plays the mayor of ny.

Check out the death collector joe Pesci first movie with a actor named Joey cortese. I liked it joe is a small guy cortese is a big guy. While filming they had a real fight on the set. Joey Pesce told me he kicked cortese's ass. I don't disbelieve it but the other guy is a big guy.
