I thought I'd start a thread for TOMORROW'S oscars. I am sure I'll contribute though I have not seen any of the nominees (which has never stopped me before)
Honestly I am only looking forward to this show cause I like it when Billy Crystal hosts and of course I love to see the fashion and who's with whom. AND I like discussing here on the BB with my friends.
The link I've included gives you the opportunity to vote though I don't expect it'll be open for votes much longer.

As I was walking to get my mail, I realize that I am a day ahead. LOL I've been one day ahead the last couple and was thinking today was Sunday. I will correct. What can I say??? : A day late and a dollar short. LOL
TIS
P.S. See, how I got everyone to jump right in on this thread? LOL One little mistake. Geez!!
TIS, my mother said the same thing this morning. She was surprised that my daughter, who works on Sundays, was home. She said, "This happens when you retire. Every day is the weekend."
There are nine movies nominated. When did they start nominating so many. People used to say that it was an honor just to be nominated. Now they can say that it is an insult not to be nominated.
Ididn't see these movies, and have no idea what they're about, except Moneyball, which I read about ten years ago. I'll root for that.

I think this is the first year that they are back to picking more than five contenders.
I'm glad to see Billy Crystal back in the driver's seat. He is very funny and always seems to do well at the Oscars. I think they should have him and Steve Martin host it together next year.
I think this is the first year that they are back to picking more than five contenders.
It's the third year. Previous two years nominated 10 movies, but with a new balloting (and chaotic) scheme, between 5 and 10 movies could be nominated if they have enough 1st place votes. This year, 9 got nominated.
Ha ha ha! I was watching that night as it happened. Niven was so cool, calm & collected. Love his remark: "The only laugh that man will probably get is by stripping down and showing his shortcomings."
The next night I remember Johnny Carson's guest was "The Academy Awards Streaker."
My favorite Oscar moment ~ the honorary Lifetime award given to Charlie Chaplin. I remember the standing ovation he received seemed to go on forever, and that was back in the day when many REAL Hollywood legends were still alive (the early '70s).
Oh yea, I remember that one too SC. At that time Chaplin was like....wow, a silent screen star that I had only seen in old movie clips and he was STILL alive. Don't know if I had ever heard him speak til then actually. He looked nothing like the movies I had seen. He had a daughter who was an actress too remember? Geraldine I believe.
You're right though, legends WERE legends back then OR at least it was way different than today.
Looks like I better get a good night's sleep to prepare for the annual LIVE BBlog of results... tho I really don't care much since I haven't seen any of them. Maybe I should do the Emmy's instead next year...
Mark Wahlberg has claimed to know who will win at the Oscars on Sunday, courtesy of "a friend at Pricewaterhouse," according to the Huffington Post.
Quote:
But Wahlberg has stated confidently that "The Artist" will triumph in the Best Picture category, with its star Jean Dujardin also taking home the prize for Best Actor.
If we take him at face value, it appears that Wahlberg was given the full lowdown on the Oscar's bash. "The Fighter" and "Contraband" star also let slip that "The Help" will have a big night, with Viola Davis winning Best Actress and co-star Octavia Spencer prevailing in the Best Supporting Actress category.
Quote:
Such is the 40-year-old star's apparent inside knowledge that his declarations even stretch to the awards' technical categories.
"'Transformers' will win for best sound editing, and "Hugo"--they will win Best Costume, Production and Cinematography."

I'm kind of with you there Geoff. Since I watch more tv than go to movies, I prefer the Emmys and also The People's Choice Awards. The Oscars haven't been the same for quite a while. I am assuming that Billy Crystal may make this show a bit more entertaining.
For me, nothing beats the sheer joy that Roberto Benigni displayed when "Life is Beautiful" won for Best Foreign Language Film. What a wonderful moment!
The Grammy's was live from L.A. and didn't air here until after the East Coast. The Oscars, live from L.A. also, and we can watch at the same time as the East Coast. Don't have a clue as to why they do that.
I am not excited about the nominees so much. I haven't seen the films. I'll still watch most of it though. I've seen some nice gowns tonight.
I remember Edith Head. Her name was credited in many a movie. Don't know that I know what she looked like though I think she wore big hats all the time.

She served as the visual inspiration for Edna Mole in THE INCREDIBLES.
EDIT - Another pro-movie montage. Funny Sandler picked DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER, which might be my pick for worst 007 movie.
Damn the DEADLINE website people are snarky cruel with their blogging.

Who wants to be in the middle of a J-Lo-Cameron Diaz sandwich? It’s wasted on the zillion men watching the Oscars. All gay, they’d rather fix both actresses’ hair.
...I'm not gay. I want to be in the middle of that cougar sandwich.
Presenter Tom Hanks loves to pretend he’s The Mayor Of Hollywood. Onstage with that beard, he looks like the boat captain on a box of frozen fishsticks.
I don't mind the movie montages. They had some very memorable scenes. As far as I'm concerned, they can cut the song & dance routines. Although, Crystal's intro wasn't bad cause it was funny.
Btw, there is a short documentary up called "God Is Bigger Than Elvis." Never heard of it til recently but it is about one of Elvis' co-stars who became a nun and the movie is about her life in the convent. Her name is Dolores Hart and she was in Loving You & King Creole. As an Elvis fan, I thought I'd mention it.
Personally I was hoping McCarthy would win. (Funny women are scarce at the Oscars.)

Off-topic, but as somebody who actually saw THE ARTIST, it was pretty good. Surprisingly for a movie that got a backlash because it's black & white and silent, it's actually mainstream accessible and yet folks won't give it a chance.
If it wins, it'll be the lowest grossing winner ever. (Don't hold that against it.)
On a scale of 1 - 10 (10 being best),how would you rate The Artist. I can't say it seems appealing to me. I likely won't go to a movie to see it, but may catch it on HBO or something.

Between 7 and 8. Probably 7 if push comes to shove. Quite decent. If anything I'm surprised the Oscars embraced it because you know they usually love their social commentary hammer to the skull pictures, that they gotta have "meaning" or something.
Anyway, give it a chance. I wouldn't call it a challenging picture. Not at all.
Now TREE OF LIFE, that's challenging. Either you're overwhelmed by it emotionally by the baggage you bring to that picture, or you think it's pretentious hooey of gooey. I loved it, but I can't blame those that don't.
I wonder if Deadline will crack gay jokes at Bradley Cooper as almost everybody else does?
I should note that A SEPARATION, the Iranian movie which won the Foreign Picture Oscar, was celebrated at film festivals world-wide...except in Iran, where it's been effectively banished. A movie which questions the theocratical religious/political approach (or short, Iranian Santorum approach) to humanity...unacceptable to the Mullahs.
Not seen it, but my usual cinemaphile cohorts love it. So it can't be a total waste of time.
Fincher not at the Oscars? I love his movies and respect him, but he's a notorious sore loser.
DRIVE should've gotten more nods. Damn good picture.

I liked it. Little overlong and draggy here and there, but effective mystery/thriller entertainment.
As for that Drinking Game, "Each time someone at your Oscar party comments on how they thought "Hugo" was an animated film" -- I really thought it was!
Don't know why but I am surprised that Hugo is getting so many awards. It seems like it wasn't talked about as much as the others.
TIS
Mind you TIS, this is the technicals. If the movie had been a hit (it flopped), along with those great reviews, it probably would've been a juggernaut in the "serious" categories.
It won't happen, but I wish Gary Oldman won Best Actor. Great actor, this is unbelievably his first Oscar nomination. And he was splendid in TINKER TAYLOR SOLDIER SPY.

you confused it with TINTIN?
(I really enjoyed TINTIN too. 7 or 8 out of 10, maybe 8 in my best mood. Always a joy when Spielberg makes a quality release and not...well, not an INDY IV.)
I've not seen WAR HORSE, believe it or not.
EDIT - more Deadline snarking:
Quote:
“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” (Sony Pictures Releasing) Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall
They won last year for The Social Network. Obviously, the Academy gives Oscars to people who survived working with that pain-in-the-ass David Fincher.
Never heard of TINTIN, so I don't know... I think I'm thinking of some animated movie a couple years ago about a train or something? Didn't see it, either...

Plummer will probably win Supporting Actor Oscar, but as a cinemaphile, I'm a real partisan for the great Max Von Sydow to win. (SEVENTH SEAL and EXORCIST 4 life.)
Fun Fact: Christopher Plummer allegedly gets pissed apparently when people bring up SOUND OF MUSIC to him. What if I bring up STAR TREK VI and DREAMSCAPE?
EDIT - I liked RANGO, but that was a "kid's movie" made more for (and appreciated by) adults. Definatley not a mindless toy commercial as the studio probably expected.
I see Max Von Sydow is up for award. Gosh, I not only now him from his role as The Exorcist, Father Merrin, but I remember him playing the part of Jesus in "The Greatest Story Ever Told" back in the 60's. Don't know his age, but he has to be up there.
Some of these "set-ups" for the presenters are incredibly weak.
Agree. (That shit with RDJ was painfully unfunny. And he's a funny guy in general.)
from Deadline:
Quote:
Surprising that Hugo is winning so many technical awards. On the other hand, with a cost of $200+M, it probably employed every member of every craft guild in Hollywood and beyond, and they all voted for it. The Graham King Films/Paramount 3D pic has only made domestic $69.3M and foreign $46.4M for a worldwide total box office of $115.8M. In other words, it’ll never earn out.
That's a problem when you "work" in Hollywood World 24/7, box office becomes your religion.

EDIT - Speaking of Ben Stiller, when was the last time he was funny? He's entering Eddie Murphy career phase. *shivers*
I was kind of rooting for Max Van Sydow but it's nice for Plummer. He's been around forever. Why does he not like the association with Sound of Music though?
she was in the fighter with marky mark (mark wahlberg)
She was Mark 9/11 Hero Wahlberg' mother in THE FIGHTER, won the Supporting Actress Oscar from last year.
EDIT - Seeing Plummer up there, I remember that Richard Burton never won an Oscar. Now that was a crime.
Burton really was a good actor. In my sophomore year of high school our entire class went to the movie theater downtown to see him in Hamlet. Lol That memory just flashed when you mentioned Burton for some reason.
Oh, no... the upcoming IN MEMORIAM section always tests my typing skills too much... *gulp*
Geoff, do you plan to type every single name? You're really gonna spoil us. Next you know we'll be asking you to type the winners acceptance speeches as they are given.
I would crack a joke that nobody wants to see that goddamn Big Boat movie again in theatres, especially in 3-D.
But weeks back, IMAX theatres in major cities around the globe held a special Valentine's Day screening. Advanced tickets sold out on-line within a half hour.
It's going to make pretty good money for a movie* already available on DVD. I guess alot of middle/high school girls from the late 90s want to relieve their teenhood.
I mean look at the money 3-D PHANTOM MENACE made, and about everybody hates that movie.

*=LION KING last year did $70 million plus.
think about how much money the original trilogy would have made.
Off-topic, but I enjoyed THE MUPPETS. "Man or Muppet" should win.

RR, everybody looks old to me. It's funny how I can say "geez they've age, but of course I haven't. It's been a while since I've seen Warren Beatty but yea and Michael Douglas too. Though he did suffer thru cancer and I'm sure that took it's toll. And, Nick Nolte too looks really aged.
So easy to be critical sitting here behind my computer. LOL

Touche.
At least Douglas still works, even while fighting cancer. Beatty's not done movies since the Clinton Administration. What's his excuse?
(Dating Madonna is detriment to your long-term health apparently. Sean Penn, you need a medical check-up.)

Off-topic, but he was good in WARRIOR. That was a decent picture, unfortunately dismissed because people (wrongly) dismissed it as THE FIGHTER meets MMA.
EDIT - does anybody ever see these live action shorts? Their only value to the audience is tie-breaker at office pool Oscar bets.
Does anyone see these short films? Seriously, I remember way back when I was young (yes that long ago), you'd go to a movie and there was always a short film before the movie. I use to hate them as a kid. When/where do they show these short films now if not at a theater?
A rare star actress in her post-40s who actually defies "rules" and can still draw.
EDIT - fun fact, Dick Smith was supposed to do make-up for TERMINATOR, but couldn't do it. He instead recommended to James Cameron a young make-up artist by the name of Stan Winston.
Thanks Dick.
EDIT 2 - Xenu was supposed to honor Oprah Winfrey, but he couldn't make it so his follower John Travolta filled in.
TIS, last I checked years ago I typed at least 65 WPM... but my spelling of names sucks!
Problem now is, my vision.
It's been a long long time since I had a typing test, but last I remember it was around 70ish BUT I don't type as much as I use to. Then again.....I'm typing away tonight.
[quote=Frosty]LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is what my X used to say ! Look how old they are getting ! I told her to go look in the fricken mirror!

LOL, yea Frosty I'm pretty confident that wouldn't be a good thing to tell your wife.
TIS
LOL , maybe that is one of the reasons not being married anymore But it was the truth, and it is my story , and I am sticking to it ! But it is funny ! TX ! Look at that afro on that gal Holy Crap ! RIP to all the great entertainers we have lost this last year . And also the great moments they have brought to our lives !!!!!!!!!!!

i will forever thank him for that as well, toy story is one of my favorite trilogies.
I must say that list sucked! All those obscure names!
Good than it wasn't just me. I didn't know many of them either. I'm sure they all were important in the movie world but NOT known as much in general population.
Hey, what the fuck??? You didn't capitalize any of the names???
TIS, it seems like there wasn't the usual longer list of big name actors this past year.
Rule of thumb: only names mentioned are those that are Guild members.
I remember the year when Gene Siskel died, he wasn't mentioned because as movie critic, he wasn't obviously a guild member. Whoopi Goldberg had to break her presentation speech after the Memorium to give him a shout-out.
Night Geoff and I agree. I like Emmys better. Still it's always fun watching a show with friends here on the BB getting everyone's input and joking around. Thanks everyone. I had fun.
TIS
Since the Oscars pre-empted Desperate Housewives, I'll be able to watch the first showing of The Walking Dead at 9:00.
The biggest thing I learned from watching the Oscars is that Farley Granger is dead, and you might want to include Nick Nolte on next year's death pool.
I was disappointed in Billy Crystal. He used to be much funnier and some of his gags, like thanking the president of the Academy for whipping the crowd into a frenzy, were recycled from past shows when Johnny Carson hosted.
I was happy for Meryl Streep. Her acceptance seemed refreshingly candid.
I can always pick the winner of the short film just from the 30 second blurb they show. Same goes for animation short. I knew nothing was going to beat the flying books.
The skit about the critique of The Wizard of Oz was mediocre at best, but Billy Crystal made it worse by naming Fredv Willard and the others involved on such a funny piece.
The big winner? Brad Pitt because he gets to go home with Angelina Jolie...although she appeared a bit gaunt.
I'd like to see Moneyball, Dragon Tattoo and maybe the Tree of Life, but I don't think I can sit through The Artist, The Descendants or Midnight in Paris.
Ben Stiller and Downey, Jr. always know how to get a good laugh without coming off like a cornball.
I missed some of the show to watch the NBA All-Star Game, in which Kobe Bryant surpassed Jordan to become the all-time leading all-star game scorer.
Another thing that irks me is the incessant question, "Who are you wearing?" If one insists an being pretentious, can one at least use correct grammar and say, "whom are you wearing?"
afs, I missed the award for Iran. What was the category?
Ok, I started to post a comment mocking her for this last night, but then changed my mind. Angelina Jolie's leg flashing last night??? My first thought, who the hell are you? God's gift to men?
Now, I'll feel free to mock her since I am not the only one who noticed her obvious attempt to be sexy I guess???

You're not alone, Tis. I caught that and I agree with you. I think she may be feeling that she's getting older and she has to prove to herself that she's still "got it."
You know how neurotic and insecure these starlets can be. Jolie is a gifted actress, but she's apparently no different in that sense than the untalented.
But I still can't stand her. Give me Jennifer Aniston any day. Brad Pitt is a moron.

Amen, PB! I don't see what Jolie has over Aniston. Those puffed lips, tattoos and stick arms are not attractive at all. Personally, I think Jennifer Aniston is one of the prettiest women in the world. And for Pete's sake - would somebody please get Angelina a sandwich?!?
Netflix just informed me that HUGO will be coming tomorrow. At least there'll be one film I'll have seen from the list lol
So I assume then you'll be typing the dialog as it happens here on this thread, for those of us who won't be watching the film? What a great guy you are!!!! LOL
Well, the disadvantage is, I watched it obviously in 2D, while it was made to see in 3D. So if it's still anywhere in theaters, I recommend that you catch it there.
Still had that great feel of 3D even in a regular version. AMAZING cinematography and a very heartwarming story. A great pick to see with family and younger children. I highly recommend it.
It's about an orphan, living in the clock tower of a train station. He tries to fix an automaton in hopes of getting a message from his deceased father.
The only other movie from that list that I've watched was Midnight in Paris. It had a great cinematography, but it was a little too long in my opinion. And certainly many wouldn't enjoy that movie, it wasn't for everyone. If those writers and artists were not important to one, one could almost say the plot was not that thick. Anyway, I did enjoy that as well.
Oh, btw, hello TIS, so rude of me to forget saying hi.
TIS, my daughter saw Hugo and LOVED it. She said it was the best movie she's ever seen.
Nobody has mentioned the clothes! I thought Penelope Cruz, Rooney Mara (sp??), Gwyneth Paltrow and Sandra Bullock were WAY up there. Although I didn't love her gown, at least Meryl Streep didn't look like a mother of the bride. And while Natalie Portman is always pretty, her gown looked like something you could pick up during prom season in the Junior Department at Macy's.
Worst dressed? Melissa McCarthy (take lessons from Octavia Spencer, please) and Emma Stone.
A lot has been said about JLo's dress. Well, guess what? If I looked like that after having twins, I'd be prancing around in that gown, too!
Thanks for the review Afs. I had no idea of the storyline.
SB, I was gonna talk gowns but the guys,I'm sure didn't care much for that topic.
I agree that Jennifer Lopez looked great as did the gal she was on stage with presenting. Not sure I remember who she was. I also agree on Melissa McCarthy. She could have done much better. I was disappointed though in Sandra Bullock's gown. It seemed out of place for her or something. Didn't care for it for some reason.
She was on with Cameron Diaz. I don't care for Cameron, and think she's clinging a bit too hard to that cute blonde thing. She's aging out of it and doesn't know quite what to do with herself.

I agree with this, Babe. She's starting to resemble an aging porn star.
Oscars 2012 was a great occasion for me and i have watched the same with a good interest , it had given me the best motivation that one can get the better idea for it.
Wow, how could they miss James Arness? Gunsmoke was, if I'm not mistaken, the longest running tv show ever. The ones they showed were many people behind the scenes that we didn't know. You'd think they'd do a bit more research. Sounds like it was hastily put together.
Darlin, you are so right ! When you go back , to Gunsmoke, Chester, McCloud ! And so many others ! Always back in the old days came on after Lawerence Welk ! ONE, TWO, THREE, I used to spend a night with my grandparents back in the 50's ! Then at 9PM Gunsmoke ! Ye Haw ! Yepper ! It was fun !

TIS, the Oscars honor those in the movies, not television. Arness was a minor movie actor.

so, arness was a minor movie actor...then jackie cooper must have been the opposite.
...Billy Crystal, who hosted the Oscars, suffered withering reviews for a routine that was long on pep but struck critics as antiquated. “Oscars Become Badly Paced Bore-Fest” read the headline in The Hollywood Reporter. Writing in The New York Times, Alessandra Stanley likened the show to “an AARP pep rally.” In The Washington Post, Hank Stuever wrote of the ceremony: “Early on, it hit the rocks and started to list. Almost everyone drowned.”
The smaller Oscars is epitomized by its biggest player, the tiny but effective Weinstein Company, which powered “The Artist” to five trophies on Sunday, including best picture, and “The Iron Lady” to two, including best actress for Meryl Streep. Harvey Weinstein, whose company also won best picture last year with “The King’s Speech,” aggressively campaigned for the films, trotting Uggie, the dog from “The Artist,” to events and insisting in radio ads that Ms. Streep deserved an Oscar partly because she hadn’t won one since 1983.
Neither “The Artist” nor “The Iron Lady” has struck a nerve at the North American box office, with each so far luring about four million moviegoers to theaters. That’s as if all the people living in Los Angeles had gone to see the films, but the rest of the country did something else.
With films that most of America hasn’t seen continuing to dominate the Oscars — “Hugo,” a winner of five trophies on Sunday, has been a box office dud — the Academy seems to have effectively eliminated one of the crucial measuring sticks of the past: the ability of a picture to move the masses to buy tickets. Put another way, the Academy, whose membership is smaller and artier than in decades past, does not seem as responsive to audience pressure as it does to campaign wizardry.
To be fair, what "popular" movies from '11 should've been nominated instead?
All the "popular" movies, or most of them, were sequels upon sequels.
Fast Five Pirates of the Caribbean IV Transformers 3 Cars 2 Harry Potter Part 7 Part 2
and So forth.
Sure I enjoyed solid popcorn entertainment from last year like FAST FIVE or RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES* or CAPTAIN AMERICA, but...would I really put them on my top 10 list? Well no. Only if the year was really that void and naked of truely good shit.
Anyway that article's complaint should be launched not at the Academy (who deserve other criticisms) but at the industry. With exception in recent years for example of THE DARK KNIGHT or INCEPTION or IRON MAN or the best of Pixar's releases and whatever, the most box-office successful movies are intentionally derivative in ambition because there is a reliable cash-making formula, which they'll religiously follow by the Orthodox. (Santorum would be proud.)
So what if they're mostly forgettable at best or worse, terrible? I've not yet met anybody who liked the boring last PIRATES picture, and I liked those other entries. Yet it grossed over a billion dollars. Same with the atriocious TRANSFORMERS 3. How uplifting.
*=RISE OF THE APES. Why did they need that stupid "Planet" shit in the title?
Oh well, I am behind ya ! Don't tell your hubby that !

Seriously speaking, let us know if you liked Hugo and tell us a little something about it. I don't know much about it at all.
I watched HUGO tonight. It's certainly worth a rental. It centers around an orphaned boy thief who secretly maintains the clocks in a Paris train station, who has been trying to repair and figure out a "writing" automaton that he and his father had been working on -- trying to figure out the mystery behind it.
The plot surrounds the story of the famous Georges Méliès*, the early (1900's) prolific filmmaker/inventor/magician famous for A Trip to the Moon (1902), a plot making this much more interesting that it otherwise would have been. (I don't know how much portrayed here is fact and how much is fiction).
If you can get over the fact that this period piece, set in Paris, is spoken in English with British accents... and if you have any interest in early cinema... you should like this.

*Ben Kingsley looks exactly like him!
funny thing, i watched the movie tonight as well. i really enjoyed it, and i believe that Hugo deserved a lot of the Oscars they won. the story is part fiction and actual fact (the parts about georges melies is fact). the acting is great, and some well known actors is in the movie.
