Your favourite sitcom characters - 11/09/07 09:30 PM

Be interested to see peoples favourite sitcom characters from TV shows past/present. It could be your fav, worst, sexiest, ugliest etc

The following 2 are my fav characters ever on a show.

Del Trotter-Only Fools and Horses 1980-2003

Derek Trotter, or Del Boy, is a loveable Cockney rogue and wheeler dealer. He spent the 1980s and early 1990s slaving away in the Peckham badlands with his market stall creaking under the weight of dodgy gear.

However his luck changed in 1996 when an antique watch hidden in his garage made him an overnight millionaire. He lived the high life for 5 years before losing it all in 2001 due to a stock market crash.BBC

Famous Quotes

Lovely Jubbly
Cushty
Rodney, you plonker
This time next year we'll be millionaires!
And all manner of Cockney rhyming slang.

David Brent-The Office 2001-2003

David Brent was the Regional Manager based at the Slough Office of Wernham Hogg. He is a philosopher to rival Descartes, a musician to rival Texas, a dancer to rival MC Hammer - and has an acute grasp of political correctness. Yet the BBC documentary crew that filmed him at work in The Office stitched him up and portrayed him as the 'boss from hell'. BBC

Famous Quotes
Avoid employing unlucky people - throw half of the pile of CVs in the bin without reading them.

If at first you don't succeed, remove all evidence you ever tried.

If you treat the people around you with love and respect, they will never guess that you're trying to get them sacked.

Being more into tv drama than comedy, there are only a handful of characters I truly love and the very first one that came to mind after reading this thread is Reverend Jim Ignatowski of "Taxi". I just loved that character. Week after week, and with him being only a co-star, I waited for the sometimes only one hilarious line, but he kept me in stitches. The kind of character you just look at and crack up (hence, the picture I posted)

Re: Your favourite sitcom characters - 11/09/07 11:05 PM

There were some great sitcoms. One of the funniest ever was Redd Foxx as Fred Sanford. He and the woman who played Aunt Esther could make me pee my pants.

Best line ever? Fred to Aunt Esther - You're so ugly that we could press your face in some dough and make gorilla cookies!

Re: Your favourite sitcom characters - 11/10/07 12:03 AM

I love watching the reruns on Lifetime. Sophia cracks me up.

Dorothy: Blanche, are you sure you're pregnant?
Blanche: I just did a home pregnancy test - it's right here.
Rose: It looks like a perfume sample.
Dorothy: Put it behind your ears, Rose
******************
Dorothy: Hi, ma. Where are you going?
Sophia: To the boardwalk. I like to watch the old guys rearrange themselves when they come out of the water.
******************
Sophia: My hiney's asleep.
Dorothy: Fine, we'll keep our voices down

Sanford and Son was great SB.
Aunt Esther: Woodrow and I are going to have a baby.
Fred Sanford: Well somebody better call the zoo.
****************
Aunt Esther: Today is my lucky day.
Fred Sanford: Why? Did you look at yourself in the mirror and it didn't break?

TIS, great character! I wish I thought of him first. My favorite moment was when he was at a fancy party Elaine was hosting and the piano player didn't show up. So Jim offers to play. Elaine is freaking out but when he sits down he starts to play a beautiful classical song, then pauses and says "I must have taken lessons"

Two characters that pop into my mind right away are Norm and Cliff from Cheers. I loved all the characters on that show, but I was always waiting for one of Norm's funny comments, or Cliff's ridiculous trivia for everyone to laugh at.

Re: Your favourite sitcom characters - 11/10/07 02:31 PM

Good topic DE NIRO!

For me, I'll break it down a bit.

For a comedy sitcom I'm going with The Italian Stallionette on that one -

Jim Ignatowski from Taxi. The guy would crack me up just by walking into the scene. Christopher Loydd was just incredible. "What does a yellow light mean?"

For a drama series sitcom,

Tony Soprano hands down. Gandolfini did such a fantastic job with the character, making you like him one week, feel sorry for him the next, despise him the following week, and laugh with him the next one. Definitley a character that kept me interested because while I enjoyed watching him, at the same time I enjoyed trying to figure him out.

Honorable mention for a drama series character :

Jack Bower (Keifer Sutherland) from '24'

and

Sonny Steelgrave (Ray Sharkey) from 'Wiseguy.'

For a comedy -

Danny DeVito as Louie DePalma in 'Taxi.'

Re: Your favourite sitcom characters - 11/10/07 07:58 PM

In no particular order:

Art Carney as Ed Norton in "The Honeymooners".

Norman Fell as Mr. Roper in "Three's Company" (he used to do a "look" in each episode - usually after he made a joke about Mrs. Roper. It cracks me up every time I see it).

Ed O'Neill as Al Bundy in "Married With Children".

Bob Denver as Maynard G. Krebs in "Dobie Gillis".

Christopher Lloyd as Jim Ignatowski in "Taxi".

Lucille Ball as Lucy Ricardo in "I Love Lucy".

Homer Simpson in "The Simpsons".

Nicholas Colasanto as Coach in "Cheers".

Re: Your favourite sitcom characters - 11/10/07 07:59 PM

Oh TIS! My sides are hurting from laughing so hard.

I probably posted this once before, but I once watched a show that had the cast being interviewed, and they said that in real life, while shooting the scene, they were really laughing (watch Tony Danza) and because it was so real, the director decided to leave it the way that it was shot!

"What does a yellow light mean?"

"Slow Down"

"WHAAAAAT-------DOEEEESSSSS-------AAAAA-------YEELLLLL------OOOOOO----LIIIIIGHT---------MEAN?"

I still have tears in my eyes from laughing so hard!!

Thank you TIS!

Technically you are right, but not 100%.

Derived forms of sitcoms / type of sitcoms are comedy, television program, television show, TV program, TV show, or a humorous drama based on situations that might arise in day-to-day life.

So technically a show like The Sopranos is considered a sitcom.

And for my two runner ups, I did refer to them as drama series. Not sitcoms. ;\)

BLASPHEMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I actually go through my every day life and am constantly reminded of stuff joked about in that show. I think because the show makes fun of little things that are apart of all of us, like strange relationship quirks to having difficult bosses, or whatever possible little thing you can think of.

Despite the racist remarks by Michael Richards, I still think Kramer is one of the funniest sitcom characters ever.

Re: Your favourite sitcom characters - 11/11/07 04:54 AM

Two more great characters I just thought of are from an older British show called Fawlty Towers. I wonder how many here know of this classic short-lived show. John Cleese as Basil Fawlty, the hotel owner, and Andrew Sachs as Manuel, the spanish speaking waiter/bellhop were great sitcom characters!

If anyone hasn't seen this show I suggest trying to rent on dvd. It truly is a classic show!

Anyway, for my own input, I'd have to say all six from Friends. There's not a scene goes by in any of that show's episodes where I'm not laughing. Great, consistent acting - and the scripting's good too.

Re: Your favourite sitcom characters - 11/11/07 06:58 PM

I know it's NOT a sitcom (am I being a corrupting influence \:p ), but Tim Conway and Harvey Corman (sp?) on the old Carol Burnett show. I recently saw this clip of them in a dentist sketch that I found hilarious.

How about Jack Tripper from Three's Company? I know this show has been so overplayed (at least here), but you can't deny John Ritter's talent for physical comedy.

One episode in particular, where he mixed some cold medication with alcohol. Anyone remember? His facial expressions and energy were pricless.

For those who don't think Seinfeld is funny, I thought the same thing after watching only one or two episodes. I really didn't watch the show regularily for the first couple years. Then, I started watching the repeats, got to know wthe characters, and loved it. Now it's one of my favorites. \:\) They call it the show about "nothing" which is true, but it had "something" that made it hilarious and kept fans tuned in every week. I loved all the characters except George and his dad. Dont' ask me why, but they were so unlikeable and/or irritating. I know, I'm all alone with that opinion. \:\/

Mr Bean

The series followed the exploits of Mr. Bean, described by Atkinson as "a child in a grown man's body" in solving various problems presented by everyday tasks and often causing disruption in the process.BBC

Andy and Lou-Little Britain

In Herby City live Andy and his carer Lou. Lou selflessly dedicates his life to looking after wheelchair-bound Andy and Andy selfishly dedicates his life to making things as difficult as possible for Lou.

What Lou doesn't know is that there's nothing wrong with Andy's legs, and whenever he turns his back, Andy's off out of his chair and gambolling about like a fat, balding, semi-naked spring lamb.
