The West Wing

The West Wing - 11/04/07 02:33 AM

The West Wing remains one of my favorite shows. I have seasons 1, 2 and 3 on dvd. I finished watching the remainder of season 3 today. My daughter and I watched watched them together. The thing I forgot about the series dvd sets is the last dvd is usually just an extra, and not part of the series. We watched the last episode and were upset to realize that was it. She was really into it. She jumped and nearly cryed when Special Agent Donovan was killed. That last episode was jammed packed.

We actually made a day of it and watched a couple episodes from seasons 1 and 2. I think Season 2 remains my favorite. The one thing I don't like about season 1 is the Moira Kelly character. I don't remember her character's name, or even her job. She was just annoying.

My daughter laughed along with me at some of the show's funny spots. That's why it's so great. It makes you think and laugh at the same time. I watched my favorite episode, "In Exelsis deo". We also watched the end of season 1 and beginning of season 2 with the shootings. I love that time of the show. The part when the President went into that old book store was a hoot. Charlie telling the President that Zoe would love an old book more then a new stero was great. Leo's expression was priceless.

I guess now I have to put season 4 on my Christmas list. \:\)

You know what I wonder?

What if Aaron Sorkin never left WW?
Posted By: Beth E

Re: The West Wing - 11/04/07 09:50 PM

They definitely forgot to bring the funny when Sorkin left.

But the last 2 seasons would have been on a decline anyway I think since Bartlett would have been winding down his second term. The show would have had to focus on new presidential candidates anyway. Once they got away from the current administration the show didn't have the same feel.

Re: The West Wing - 11/04/07 09:54 PM

A former co-worker of mine use to watch the West Wing all the time. She loved it. She was my "political" conversational pal. Considering all our political talks/interests, she was shocked that I never watched it. I wouldn't mind except, like with 24, I don't want to come in somewhere in the middle. \:\/ Anyway I have heard it's very good.

If they ever repeat it from season one, perhaps I'll watch. I really don't know why I never saw it before except if it was back to back with another show I favored.

Re: The West Wing - 11/04/07 10:49 PM

They used to have the reruns on A&E I believe. I doubt it'll be on tv again. You should buy the dvd's. They're not that expensive. I think it came on at 10:00 at night, so that may be a reason why some have never watched it. The shows comic relief moments made it something different.

I don't think you have to belong to any particular party either to like it. One of my niece's husbands is a staunch republican and he absolutely loves the show. I think he has the dvd's up to Season 6.

Re: The West Wing - 11/05/07 04:31 PM

Oh, I miss me some West Wing!! I absolutely loved that show!! It was funny, witting, touching and even educational. My daughter's teacher used The Stackhouse Filibuster in Civics class because they were learning about filibusters (one of my fave episodes).

Beth, I'm with you. Charlie was one of my favorite characters, and I always had the serious hots for Josh. Honestly, aside from Mandy (the character you mentioned), I never really disliked any of the characters. I was watching Criminal Minds the other night, and the guy who played Ron Butterfield (the head of POTUS' Secret Service detail) was on. I was all excited, and I just kept saying, "Hey! It's Ron Butterfield!" until Mr. Babe told me to be quiet.

Edit: Btw, it used to be shown on Bravo, since it's owned by NBC. I was just wondering the other day why they weren't showing the reruns!! I wish they would!
Posted By: Beth E

Re: The West Wing - 11/05/07 04:53 PM

Yeah, Bravo is the station that ran the re-runs. I can't keep them straight.

The actor who played Butterfield was spot on. He did a great job on the episodes around the shooting. Bartlett telling the doctor Butterfield had about 7 broken bones in his hand, so someone might want to give him an aspiring was great. Those early years are my favorites.

Can't leave out Ainsley either. When she mistakenly went into Leo's closet instead of the bathroom, and Bartlett's reaction was great. I almost wet my pants laughing so hard.

I love the Josh/Donna scenerio. Watching them flirt during the first years was fun to watch. Josh could be a nimrod sometimes. I did not like Amy. She was too snooty for him.
Posted By: Sicilian Babe

Re: The West Wing - 11/05/07 05:10 PM

Oh, the Amy hate!! I forgot about Amy!!! Miss Lockjaw! YUK!

I always hoped for something between Sam and Ainsley! The best was the episode centered around the State of the Union, when she was dancing in her bathrobe to Blame It On the Bossa Nova, and the president walked in.

And my absolute favorite episode for bringing the funny was Celestial Navigation - The President's Secret Plan to Fight Inflation, I had Woot Canaw!!, Toby and Sam unable to find the police station in CT, and on the serious side, Edward James Olmos doing a superb job as the President's nominee to the Supreme Court.

Re: The West Wing - 11/05/07 05:15 PM

The first two seasons of "The West Wing" are among the best written and acted I've ever seen on tv. I started to lose interest in it during the third season when the show kind of lost focus and only watched it periodically after that.

The best of the series was Bartlett's "showdown" with God after his secretary died. It was one of the best hours EVER on tv!!

Re: The West Wing - 11/05/07 05:19 PM

Oh, how Martin Sheen never received an Emmy for that role defies belief. Granted, he had tough competition from Gandolfini, but he should have won for that episode alone.
Posted By: Beth E

Re: The West Wing - 11/05/07 06:22 PM

I think Martin had a love/hate relationship with the Emmy people. Half the people on the Emmy Nominating committee wouldn't know a good show if it fell into their lap. I wonder if Martin's outspoken political views played a role in him being passed over.

Mrs. Landingham's death was one of the most riveting episode ever. Bartlett's relationship with his loyal secretary was very relevant in those epidodes.

Re: The West Wing - 11/05/07 06:24 PM

I doubt that liberal politics could prevent you from winning in Hollywood. I think it was just poor decision making by the Emmy people.

Re: The West Wing - 11/05/07 06:25 PM

My favorite C.J. moment is "The Jackal". How out of character was that for her.
Posted By: Sicilian Babe

Re: The West Wing - 11/05/07 06:42 PM

That one, and when she couldn't sleep because she slipped to that reporter about the Grand Jury. "I rode the lifecyle for and hour and a half this morning. If it was a real cycle, I would be in Belgium by now."
Posted By: Beth E

Re: The West Wing - 11/05/07 06:44 PM

The flashback scene after the shooting showing here in her old job showed her in a new light too. Her poor client fell from #3 to #9 on the best list. "They take that stuff seriously". Her slipping in the pool was hilarious.
Posted By: Sicilian Babe

Re: The West Wing - 11/05/07 07:07 PM

Avert your eyes!! That was the best! I always thought, after that scene, that there had been something between CJ and Toby in the past.
Posted By: Beth E

Re: The West Wing - 11/05/07 07:16 PM

Emily's list. "Early money is like yeast. It helps raise the dough."

Toby needed a love interest. The closest he got I think was when he had a crush on Laura Dern's poet character.

I never liked him with Andy. She was mean to him I think.

Posted By: Beth E

Re: The West Wing - 11/05/07 07:21 PM

As serious as Toby was he had his moments too. My favorites are:

I forget what bill he and Andy were talking about, but they were in his office and she reached for a muffin or something and he told her she couldn't have one.

When he was in the meeting with the network execs and one reached towards the fruit basket and he said, "Don't eat the fruit".

Of course, when Josh runs in that "Sam's getting beat by a girl" and Toby says, "Ginger, get the popcorn".

Sam: About a week ago I accidentally slept with a prostitute.
Toby: Really?
Sam: Yes.
Toby: You accidentally slept with a prostitute?
Sam: Call girl.
Toby: Accidentally?
Sam: Yes.
Toby: I don't understand. Did you trip over something?

Seeing Toby led out of the White House when he was fired was very sad.

Re: The West Wing - 11/05/07 07:26 PM

This was another great scene.

Bartlet: C.J., on your tombstone it's going to read, Post Hoc, Ergo Propter Hoc.
C.J.: Okay, but none of my visitors are going to be able to understand my tombstone.
Bartlet: Twenty-seven lawyers in the room, anybody know post hoc, ergo propter hoc? Josh?
Josh: Uh, post, after. After hoc. Ergo, therefore. After hoc, therefore something else hoc.
Bartlet: Thank you. Next?

Re: The West Wing - 11/05/07 08:40 PM

Thanks for that link, Beth. Even though I have the first two seasons on DVD, its been awhile since I saw that ending. It still gives me chills.

I'm fascinated by stories about men in power (one of the reasons why I like "The Godfather" so much) and a show about the president of the United States would certainly interest me. "The West Wing" added to that fascination because it (so greatly) showed the "human" side of the president. Another excellent epiosde I love is the one about the religious zealots whom Bartlett threw out of the White House. Imagine, the most powerful man in the world telling you to get out of his house!

Re: The West Wing - 11/05/07 10:26 PM

That was the pilot episode I believe. Where the woman called Toby and Josh on their "New York sense of humor".

Bartlett told them "You can all get your fat asses out of my white house".

Re: The West Wing - 11/06/07 02:02 AM

That was a great scene.

I loved Toby. I always felt that he was like Eeyore, just too sad. And yet he could be so very funny, in that dry Toby way. Like in Celestial Navigation, when Sam starts going on about how Justice Mendoza would drive down from Nova Scotia, "I would imagine he'd take the Trans-Canada Highway..." and then does it again to POTUS when he's already pissed off at all of them, and Toby just rubs his head and says, "Shut UP". Or when Josh mocks them in that episode for not being able to find Wesley, CT, Toby simply asks him to tell them more about the President's secret plan to fight inflation. He delivery was so perfect.

I think that like you, Beth, I loved Toby most in In Excelsis Deo. He was always so great when he was doing something that he knew was politically wrong, but morally right. When POTUS calls him into the Oval Office to ask if he had used the president's name to order the full military burial for the homeless man, and he defiantly tells him that he did, and that he hopes that all veterans would do so. He stands there looking a bit sheepish and a bit defiant, a tough combination to pull off, but he somehow did.

Thats the scene... its one of my favorites from not only the series, but from what I've ever seen on television. Here is the president of the United States of America, arguably the most powerful person on Earth, getting "down" with some people he really can't stand. And you just KNOW there ain't nothin' they can do about it. \:D He doesn't lose his temper per se, but its just boiling under the point where he'd explode. (It reminds me of Vito Corleone's veiled threat to the Mob bosses "warning" them not to dare to try another attempt on Michael's life before he returns from Sicily). GOTTA LOVE IT!!

Re: The West Wing - 11/06/07 12:32 PM

What a hoot it was when he told that Reverend, "I do think $5.00 is too high a price to pay for pornography".

And to think, the early concept of the show was to focus primarily on the West Wing staff and not the president. Bartlett was to only be on occassionally.

Re: The West Wing - 11/06/07 05:55 PM

A great show. I, too, loved the first two seasons the best. Had it continued, I don't know if I could have watched without Leo's character. I think Jimmy Smits is a great actor, but the show lost something with him in it.

My favorite episode was in Season 2 after Bartlett was shot and they had flashbacks to how they all came together. Runner-up was when Mark Harmon's character was killed after protecting CJ. Right up there was when Bartlett disclosed he had MS to Toby and how Toby figured it out beforehand.
Posted By: Beth E

Re: The West Wing - 11/06/07 05:58 PM

Those are my top picks too Goombah. My daughter was watching season 3 with me and her jaw dropped open when Mark Harmon's character was killed. I think I've converted her. \:\)

My favorite scene with Ainsley was when Sam made the comment how she could make a good dog break its leash. He was so out of touch with how to talk to a woman that it was funny and he spent a significant time back peddling to her.

The character I could not stand was the little blond twerp who came on near the end of the series. Can't remember her name, but she was the one who announced that Leo died. I think it was her voice that really did it for me.

Re: The West Wing - 11/06/07 06:18 PM

Oh yes, she plays on "Pushing daisies" now. I don't know her name at the moment. I think it was AnnaBell. Her voice was like nails on a chalk board.

I think I was so sick of the last 2 seasons by then that all the new characters I could have done without. Jeanine Gerafallo (sp) tops that list.

I think the funniest Josh moments were 1) when he wished Donna a happy anniversary for her starting with him and it was just to mock Donna for taking the job after her boyfriend dumped her and 2) when Josh was caught up blogging on his own website with the hate mail he received.

My favorite serious moment with Josh was when Bartlett came to the airport after Josh's dad passed away. Honorable mention when he sat in with the therapist after smashing his glass and cutting his hand, which was a result of being shot during the assassination attempt.

I've never watched the West Wing, but for those interested, Best Buy is currently selling Seasons 1 through 7 for $14.99 each. Same price for Smallville DVDs also. I believe the sale lasts through 11/17.

All those scenerios you mentioned Goobah were great. The scene where Josh teases Donna about her boyfriend was tapped off with her telling him, "If you were in an accident I wouldn't stop for red lights".

What were the general storylines in 4 & 5 that you did not like, SB? I did not like the seeing the Jimmy Smits character's campaign from the ground up. Too real and very boring television IMO.

Loved the episode where Leo had the heart attack - that was fairly late in the series.
Posted By: Sicilian Babe

Re: The West Wing - 11/18/07 01:43 AM

I didn't like most of the re-election campaign, which was lots of Season 4 and then Season 5 was just the WORST, with that whole stupid storyline with the government shutting down and Zoey and the idiot Frenchman, who got her kidnapped. Although though there were still exceptional moments, by and large they were not my favorites.

I really don't know WHY, but I find that story absolutely hysterical. I still laugh whenever I think of it (and of the way Paul told it).

That was pretty hilarious. I think it's because we can just picture a tub of baby wipes flying through the air.

I'll see if I can find the story and paste it.

I would get an even bigger laugh if he threw HER off the terrace.

EDIT: I think it was in a baseball thread that's probably from 3 years ago, and it's not here anymore.

Re: The West Wing - 11/20/07 05:11 PM

After all that it was the can of spray that she threw, not the wipes. That knocks your "wipe out" joke right off the page.

Re: The West Wing - 11/20/07 05:13 PM

Oddly enough, when he TOLD the story (in person) it was the wipes that got thrown off the terrace.

SC, you are just hilarious. I swear, I don't know how you come up with this stuff!!

And that was the funniest!! I can just imagine him and "the GF" arguing like that! How nice to reread some "Windbag" stories.

That was a good story. Thanks for posting that SC. Falling bathroom spray, makeup sex, waking up late, And he still won the game.

BTW I liked that post of yours SC with all those icons.

I miss these as well.

Ten Things I Think I Think... (ala Peter King)

1 - Plaw has make-up sex in 30 minutes. Good Lord, why do I have this unending need to always do the math??? Like Buffy said - TMI!!!!

And Paul's prediction for me? He called me "moody".

BE: Along with the newbie, the toughest player to figure. Has experience and knows the game, but who knows? Can be moody, and sometimes disappears for long stretches. If she stays with it all season, she could finish as high as third or fourth. On the other hand, it wouldn't be a major surprise if she finished seventh or eighth, either.
Prediction: Sixth
Odds: 15-1

I've been interested in this show for sometime now. I haven't seen a show since the friggin Sopranos ended. But this really caught my attention; so can someone give me a "inside look" on the show, and exactly what it's about?

The Plaw and Pork Show or The West Wing?? ;\)

The West Wing is all about a fictional US President and his staff. It was on for 7 years, and was one of the best-written and best-performed shows on television.

I have Seasons 1 and 2 on DVD, which to me were the best. I would definitely say they were worth having.

Re: The West Wing - 11/21/07 01:15 AM

I concur with Sicilian Babe and would add that Season 3 was quite good too. After that, they are definitely worth watching but I would question whether worth owning.
Posted By: Sicilian Babe

Re: The West Wing - 11/21/07 01:48 AM

Oh, definitely Season 3, if only for the episode called "100,000 Airplanes". That is one of my favorites.

I also love this speech from Season 4's "20 Hours in America Part II":

"Yet the true measure of a people's strength is how they rise to master that moment when it does arrive. Forty-four people were killed a couple of hours ago at Kennison State University." Shot of Sam and Bruno in tuxes standing near the back, listening. Then a shot of C.J. in a gorgeous white gown, standing near Charlie, both looking sad. "Three swimmers from the men's team were killed and two others are in critical condition, when, after having heard the explosion from their practice facility, they ran into the fire to help get people out. Ran into the fire. The streets of heaven are too crowded with angels tonight. They're our students and our teachers and our parents and our friends. The streets of heaven are too crowded with angels but every time we think we've measured our capacity to meet a challenge we look up and we're reminded that that capacity may well be limitless. This is a time for American heroes. We will do what is hard. We will achieve what is great. This is a time for American heroes and we reach for the stars. God bless their memory, God bless you and God bless the United States of America." Standing ovation. Bruno asks Sam, "When did you write that last part?" Sam: "In the car." Bruno hesitates for a moment and says, "Freak."

I honestly don't know. I don't remember it being in widescreen.

Re: The West Wing - 11/30/07 02:36 PM

Just wanted to bump this up to alert West Wing fans that Costco had all 7 seasons for $15.99 each. I picked up 3 and 7, and am now happy. I didn't even love Season 7 all that much, but had to have Leo's death and funeral, and the hookups of Donna/Josh and CJ/Danny.
Posted By: Beth E

Re: The West Wing - 11/30/07 02:52 PM

Of course, I'm not a Costco customer. I wonder if Sam's club will follow suit.

I agree about Season 7. The whole election business is a real bore. But Leo/Donna/Josh make it worth watching again.
Posted By: Sicilian Babe

Re: The West Wing - 11/30/07 04:35 PM

Do you know anyone who is, and can let you in?? Sometimes, if you tell them you're a Sam's customer and thinking of joining, they might let you shop for a day.

Well, seeing Jimmy Smits wasn't too hard on the eyes, either. Btw, I read somewhere that Vinick was actually supposed to win, but when John Spencer died, they felt that it would be too much for Smit's character to lose his running mate and then the election, too.

Re: The West Wing - 04/30/13 02:04 AM

There are so many great moments in WW that I don't know if I can narrow it down, but I think that the quiet moments were some of the best. I love Charlie and his interaction with the President. Charlie was one of the few that could get away with calling Jed out, and he was great at it, like when the President asked him about hiring Ainsley, and Charlie says something about the Republicans being the party of inclusion. Or when he tries to wake the President up after a night of very little sleep and he tells him to pull it together, it wasn't a bad dream, he really is the President of the US.

However, I absolutely loved Charlie when POTUS gives him his family carving set that had been made by Paul Revere. Also, there's a scene between the two of them in the series finale which I will NOT spoil for you, but it moved me to tears.

And I love badass Charlie in the bar, coming to Zoe's honor, and then telling Josh and Sam afterwards that there were no guys at the bar they could have taken! lol

Re: The West Wing - 04/30/13 08:19 AM

Yeah, those are both hilarious and touching moments SB. smile The one that Charlie schooled that boy that was in big brother program with Agent Donovan was awesome too.

I adore CJ. I liked how she would get furious when it came to women's issues in fictional Qumar or Saudi Arabia.
Posted By: afsaneh77

Re: The West Wing - 07/10/13 08:53 AM

Okay, finally finished the whole series. It's funny that now I read SB and Beth's comment that season 7 was boring for them. The only boring season in my opinion was season 5, which still has great episodes like "The Warfare of Genghis Khan" and "Supremes." But once I started season 6, it was like a good book you can never put down. I must be some sort of election freak, which I know I am. I am pretty much looking like Josh by the "Transition" episode now, sleep deprived and on edge. lol

The characters I most liked: Josh and CJ. The one I least liked: Toby. He would get on my nerves most of the time.

At any case, this was one of the best series I've watched. I really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to the next season of "The Newsroom" now.

Re: The West Wing - 07/11/13 03:05 AM

Afs, glad you enjoyed! I don't hate 7, I hated 5 and some of 6. The Supremes was an exception, and what a great one! I love Glenn Close as the Chief Justice (who does NOT swear in Santos, btw, guess she was too expensive lol).

The show was great on so many levels. And you dislike Toby??? I FLOVE Toby! He's like a human Eeyore. His scenes are some of my favorites - "Baby's come with hats". I don't like what they did with him towards the end, which may have contributed to my dislike of the last seasons.

I, too, am looking forward to The Newsroom! It's not up to WW standards, but it's way better than most of the dreck that's on TV now.

Yeah, I noticed they showed a blonde woman in robe whose hair positively was noting like something Glenn Close has even worn. lol She is wonderful. I loved her in "Damages." That was a good show as well.

I said the character I least liked was Toby. I don't dislike him, but he is most of the time too much of an asshole as Josh put it. lol And just like Andy said, he is always gloomy. His character works well in the dynamic of the show, but it wouldn't be the first character I pick as my favorite. wink With the way he and president were at it at times, I thought what they did with him would be inevitable.

Click to reveal..
BTW, I had no idea that Spencer himself had died. frown Imagine my shock! And I expected his character's death way sooner, during the first heart attack. So I guess nothing was spoiled for me in the least.
Posted By: Sicilian Babe

Re: The West Wing - 07/11/13 06:20 PM

I always thought Toby was Bartlett's conscience. When POTUS was too close to only caring about politics, Toby often opened his eyes. When Toby arranged for the formal funeral for the homeless veteran (IMO, the best Christmas episode), and the President said what if every homeless veteran came seeking such a thing, Toby just sort of glances at him, looks away and says something to the effect of, "We should only hope." To me, that scene summed up Toby's relationship with the president.

Click to reveal..
Yes, John Spencer's death was so sad! Originally, Santos was supposed to lose, but they changed the script because after Leo's death, that would have been too much. Also, I think they were considering continuing the new series with Smits as the president, but that died with Leo as well.

When you look back, though, that campaign was very fortuitous of WW. You had a young, handsome, virtually unknown minority candidate going up against an older, experienced, moderate Republican who was being pushed to the right by his campaign. Remind you of any other presidential campaign??? wink
Posted By: afsaneh77

Re: The West Wing - 07/11/13 07:51 PM

Sure, Toby was a nagging conscience. Still the stress is on nagging. lol

As for that campaign being fortuitous, so many times while watching the WW stories I felt that they were foretelling the future. Made me think that the writers had a crystal ball or were psychics. lol
