I'm in Munich a week or so before Oktoberfest. Going any later would have been far too expensive.

You can have your own beer festival without traveling:
Some brewers and distributors will happily sponsor a free tasting at your house of worship, social club, association, etc., as long as you make a good faith effort to turn out a lot of people. Some organizations hold these events as fund-raisers, coupling the beer tasting with a football telecast.

There is absolutely nothing like Oktoberfest in Munich! Even if you don't drink beer you have fun. And the food is fantastic!
