Subway

Anyone eat at Subway much? When they first appeared in the UK (presumably our friends in America have had Subway for years) it seemed like a great idea.

Problem is that the quality of the sandwich depends a lot on the effort that the spotty teen serving you is willing to put in. I've had some real awful efforts - badly spliced bread, poorly arranged salad that spills out too much, olive oil sloshed over it with no care at all.

Also, the ingredients ain't that great. Processed meats and plastic cheese.

To top if off, we have a really annoying guy in the TV adverts ("When you think about it, we don't make the sandwiches ... you do!") And they're US-style adverts - y'know, lots of camera shots rolling over appetizing arrangements of food the like of which you never actually see in the shop itself.

Maybe I'll make my own sandwiches in future. Or am I being to harsh?

I hate Jared, the spokesperson. The commercials are always annoying with the same shit over and over, either complimenting Jared on his looks, or raving about how shitty other chicken is compared to Subway's.

Now as for the food, I like Subway a lot. Most of the time I get the same thing, Meatball sub.

Screw SUBWAY. I only eat their delicious Meatball Subs with honey mustard and assorted cheese crumbs....oh sorry.

I prefer JERSEY MIKE's, which gives you more meat for the dollar(or pound) and really kick ass. No idea if any are around your country, but I gotta agree that many things regarding SUBWAY do suck.

Anyway, the best plan is to make your own sandwich. That way, if it sucks, you know who to blame.

Subway's alright, but I prefer the local sub place by my home Sub Center almost a pound of meat in their subs. Sub Center is way better. The sandwiches are a fist thick, with anything you want, plus a delicious side of Homestyle Potato Salad or Macaroni Salad...

Just googled this guy, apparently he is famous in the US for having lost weight through eating Subway sandwiches!!!

What was he eating before? Was he on the Brando diet?

I try to avoid places like Quizno's, Subway or Blimpie's, and stick to small mom and pop delis. There was a great place called Hollywood Sandwich Company and all the subs were named after movies (yes, they had a Godfather and a Goodfellas). They were great, and they made the best red potato salad with dill. YUM. Unfortunately, they closed.

It's okay every now and then. It's quite popular here. My problem is I like a lot of meat in my sub. I hate it when you take a bite of the sandwich and it's 99 per cent bread. Just like when you have a meatball sandwich and you have a huge bread roll and two meatballs. :p

Subway is my favorite resturant EVERRRR! I go there like every single day and always get sweet onion chicken terrayaki with bacon. I have like 20 club cards that are completely filled. Im saving them for college next year.

Bad news Bull....SUBWAY has discontinued those cards. Sorry mate.

Subway isn't too bad, but its nothing compared to a little deli in town on Market Street, called (of all things) the Market Street Deli. The pizza isn't anything to write home about, but they make a cold cut like nobody's business. I always get the Italian cold cut, with everything except mayo and sweet peppers, and I always get extra hots and extra oil.

Yes they did But they cant refuse to take cards after the fact. They just arent giving out any more cards and stamps. The ones that I have are still valid. In fact, some local subways are still giving out stamps so its not over yet.

I like subway. Jared makes me want to . But now I like Blimpies better.

Avanti's for a Gondola...or Alpine in Elmwood Park. Better yet, get thee to the deli counter of your neighborhood grocery store and build your own!

I do like Subway and by my calculations I've consumed a couple hundred yards of their sub sandwiches in my lifetime. But there's nothing like finding a neighborhod deli with just the right combination of bread ingredients and toppings for the perfect sub.

Avanti's in Peoria???

I'm with you, SB. There are plenty of good independent sub shops in NJ, which has a huge Italian-American population, and thus plenty of good, inexpensive eateries. When I'm in Arizona or another state far away, I prefer Quiznos, which is the best of the chains.

I try to do mom and pop in everything and always avoid chains. Unfortunately in Florida there are some pretty awful mom and pop subway places. Nothing compares to the Northeast.

I love Subway. They can get a little expensive eating there daily but you don't feel as "guilty." I used to get their crab/seafood sub but I think that might have been a summer thing. I always get ham sub! That's all I need to get me through the day. Why did they discontinue the cards? Giving out too many free subs? However, since probably last summer I got hooked on Chicken Parm subs. I can't get 1 in texas so I really can only get them when I'm here in New York. In the past 2 weeks or so I've probably consumed 3 or 4.

As for Blimpie, they're my 2nd favorite chain behind Subway. I don't see many of the however I got hooked on them when I was a freshman in college in Corpus Christi. I'd go there every Tuesday & Thursday because I'd have about a 10 minute break in between my classes which were in the same room, so I'd just leave all my stuff and get a breakfast sub which was like eggs on a roll with bacon and such. It was so good. Sometimes I'd through some ham on there too. If I wasn't eating Blimpie, I'd usually be eating Chik-Fil-A down there. Man, those were the days.

I think some people were making counterfit stamps or something. Either way it really pissed me off when I found out about that.

I think that goes for any restaurant you go to. I've had good and I've had bad experiences at McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's. Once at a Wendy's they didn't cook the burger enough and I wound up throwing it up in a matter of hours. However, since there's a Wendy's right where I work (and I used to get the hook up), I'd eat there. Also, this is probably the funniest story I've had is I went to a Burger King a couple of years ago when they had what they called a "Shaq Pack." I think it was was like a huge drink and fries with a sourdough burger (Shaq size food). Well, I drove up to place my order and tell them I wanted a Shaq Pack. The person on the other end tells me we're outta Shaq Packs. I think to myself and ask them, "How do you run outta Shaq Packs!?" It's a burger, fries and a drink. Then he gave me some kinda answer like they ran outta sourdough or something. Well I order something else and when I pull up to the window to pay, someone else asks me if I wanted a Shaq Pack and I said yes and they get me one instead. I couldn't believe it, "we've ran outta Shaq Packs!"

All this talk about Subway is making me hungry for a sandwich.

I eat at Blimpie a lot of the time because of their Ciabetta Sandwiches. Especially the "Siclian" with slow-cured ham, salami, prosciuttini and provolone served panini grilled, with roasted red pepppers and Italian sauce. My favorite sandwich!

Making me hungry, though I had one yesterday, I'm going to see if I can get it again today.

Subway? Pish-posh. Anyone here ever had a Quiznos sub? The toasted bread makes it all the better.

Agreed, they often have better deals, and finer quality.

There are a bunch of places on campus, but I actually like to make my own. Best is a chicken finger sub. I go to a bakery and get their sub rolls (which pretty much all entire WNY pizza shops get their sub rolls), and toast them on both sides. A little provalone cheese, melted on, a few dashes of parmesan. Add a chicken finger or two, drenched in hot sauce and bleu cheese, and some onions+lettuce, and you have one kickass sandwich for the game/race.

You know, thinking of this, maybe we should have a thread called the "GangsterBB Cookbook" where we can post our favorite mafia (and non-mafia) recipes? It might be cool!

I loved Subway when it first appeared in the UK it was kind of a novelty. Plus they were only in major cities so it was rare and enjoyable when I got one. Now they're all over the place and since one appeared in my town (about a year ago) I haven't had one. I realised they're not actually that good and you're better off going to a local sandwich bar. They're fresher, taste better and are much cheaper.

YTB - Thank you SO MUCH for that link and a wonderful stroll down Memory Lane.

I looked at their "history" story and am somewhat confused. Its noted that they opened in 1971, but I know for a fact they were in Peoria (on W. Main St.) in 1969 when I went to Bradley.

Regardless, their homemade bread, much different from the NY style Italian breads, quickly became a dietary staple of mine. Every Wednesday they'd have an "all you can eat spaghetti night" for $1.00 which got me through many hungry periods. They had pizza which was just OK (the "best" thing about it was the cool way to take it out.... on a cardboard plate wrapped in a paper bag) BUT the best thing on their menu was a "gondola", their version of an Italian hero.

The gondola included ham, salami, cheese (which melted slightly from the heat of the bread) and lettuce. They were to die for!! I'd go back to Peoria just to get a few of them!!

SC, I was in Champaign starting in fall of 1977 and I remember guys making a run up to Bloomington for Gondolas. I'm almost certain it was Bloomington (and not Peoria) because they were back in Champaign in about two hours. And I was under the impression that Avantis had been around for about ten years at the time I was a student, which would at least coincide with your recollections from the late-'60's.

Reading the second paragraph, it implies that the Peoria restaurant was the original and had been operating successfully for a few years when the brother opened the Bloomington location in 1971. That would be consistent with both of our stories, though I was mistaken about Bloomington being first.

Doesn't change that fact that it's still one of my favorite sub sandwiches. I definitely have to pencil a side trip to Bloomington next time I'm in Champaign for a ball game. Better yet, the riverboat and Big Al's in Peoria beckon!

YTB - The name (Avanti's) and the address were the same in 1969 as they are today, but regardless, you're right .... their sandwiches are awesome.

Speaking of Champaign, I worked there for about a week in 1971 at a sandwich place called "Submarine Village". It was nothing special; very much like Subway. I can't remember exactly where it was, though, other than it being near the UI campus.

You guys out there (in the midwest) have some great eatin' places. I've eaten steak all across the country and one of the best I've ever had was from a "chain" restaurant out there (Shula's in Itasca). Dunno if it had anything to do with it being close to the stockyards but it was awesome!
