Hot Sauce

Hot Sauce - 03/02/05 02:50 AM

I'm one of those assholes who likes to put hot sauce on almost everything I eat, but I only recently discovered this affectation. Anyone else here do the same, and could they recommend some good sauces?

Right now I'm kind of partial to this Yucatan Sunshine Habenero sauce, which is reletively mild but tastes really great.

Re: Hot Sauce - 03/02/05 02:53 AM

I tried this on a ham sandwich with cheap hot sauce, and it tasted bitter and sour, not hot.

Well that's no good at all.

Nice new avatar by the way, it looks pretty sweet.

Thanks. Chinatown rules.

What is THE brand of hot sauce to get? Don't give me all these "Coca Cala-CajunsddsdsdSA" stuff, just an average name. :p

Re: Hot Sauce - 03/02/05 03:00 AM

Like I said, that Yucatan Sunshine has an awesome taste. I usually just use Tobasco or Cholula, all three of which are easy to find (at least here in Michigan) and pretty cheap to boot.

Re: Hot Sauce - 03/02/05 03:30 AM

Tapatio is my favorite hot sauce, and IMO, the best tasting hot sauce. It contains no vinegar, which rules because I'm not a big fan of the vinegary taste in Tobasco. It's also got a really nice kick to it, not too hot, but not mild either. I put it on burgers, pizza, my scrambled eggs, Doritos, potato chips, Pringles, almost anything you can think of putting hot sauce on. I go through about a bottle a month. It's fantastic. I also got this Habanero hot sauce called "El Yucateco." I use it sparingly, as it is hotter than the hinges on Hell's door.

Here in Georgia we live on Texas Pete hot sauce. It's cheap, you can find it anywhere, and every restaurant has it on the table with the salt and pepper. I am sure it's not "the best" but it gets the job done.

Re: Hot Sauce - 03/02/05 07:20 AM

I love the heat! But not just the heat, but, the taste of it.... which is even better.

Last batch of chili I made, had some heat to it, but not overwhelming... (I made it for the folks, so)... BUT, a couple dried habeneros in there made it taste SO good, with a nice underlying "bass" tone, that made it awesome!

I also like the heat, though. My favorite pub has THE BEST hot wings I ever had (and I had'm all over the world! lol) -- and I sometimes ask for them "extra hot". Wow. Okay, they ARE hot at that point... lol

The green Tobasco sauce has a nice flavor, but it's very mild. The authentic Mexican diner nearby had a great havenero hot sauce on every table, but last time I was there, it was absent. I wish I knew the brand...

I won't be suprised if Turnbull chimes in here eventually -- the connaisseur of peppers! If you do read this, TB, please tell me again what peppers we were sharing that night -- they tasted great, yet, mild enough not to ruin your dinner!

I like the hot sauce packets from Taco Bell that have obnoxious saying like "how many of these do you have in your glove compartment." Sorry, my taste in food runs pretty cheap!

Re: Hot Sauce - 03/02/05 09:42 AM

The only hot sauce that goes into me is when the ice in my scotch melts.

I have a sure-fire method of judging how hot the hot sauce is in a Mexican restaurant. I go into the men's room and count the fire extinquishers on the wall.

Lauren, the mild sauce from Taco Bell is as hot as I dare.

I'm having Taco Bell for dinner. I use the "fire" sauce.

I'm the a$$hole who likes to put ketchup on everything. Seriously, I buy those "mess free" upside down ketchup bottles probably every 2 weeks I go to the store. I put ketchup on almost EVERYTHING. I love the f*ck outta ketchup!

To much heartburn for me.

Sorry I was off track last post. I like hot sauce, but just mild, not extremely hot. My favorite hot sauce is probably Louisiana Hot Sauce.

McIlhenny's Tabasco is the ONLY thing to use.

Fire sauce is excellent. I put ketchup on everything too. Ever had ketchup on pizza? Yum.

I like Texas Pete's. I have it when I visit my sister in Virginia, but I've never seen it here.

Re: Hot Sauce - 03/03/05 06:18 AM

I'm a hot sauce and hot pepper nut. Sauces and peppers are rated on a scale of "Scovil units"--the more, the hotter. Regular red Tabasco rates about 2,500 Scovils. El Yucateco green habanero sauce is about 8k. Kid stuff.
I buy my hot sauces from Mo Hotta/Mo Betta, or Peppers, both mail order or Web catalogs. I have one that I put (sparingly) in food that rates 330,000 Scovils, and a bottle of habanero extract that I use in soups with an eyedropper that goes 750k Scovils. I also have bags of fresh habanero and Thai peppers that I buy at Asian markets. I cut them up and mix them in food--particularly rice, which tends to be bland otherwise.

Goddamnit, Turnbull's even an expert on peppers!

I'm with SaladBar on Tobasco sauce. Dee-licious.

Oh my gosh! You are terrible!

I do remember telling you about my terrible "hot sauce in the eye" incident. That sucked so bad. But your last comment, I couldent have expected anything different from you. ha ha.

Not only can I not stand anything remotely spicy, hot sause has a way of showing it hates me just as much.
A little off topic but...I dont think I'll ever be able to look at hot sause the same way after watching an episode of "Curb"

Re: Hot Sauce - 10/31/05 01:57 AM

My dad went to our local Peppers outlet store today, and he bought me this hot sauce called "Da' Bomb Ground Zero." Here's the inscription:

This sauce is the hottest on Earth. Pure habanero pepper enhanced with habanero infused flavor create a sauce measured at 234,000 Scoville units. Wicked beyond belief.

I put the very tip of a toothpick into it and tasted it. Lit my whole mouth on fire.

Re: Hot Sauce - 10/31/05 02:23 AM

We bought some habenaro sauce from walmart just because it was cheap selling at 4 bottles for a dollar. I have not tasted anything that hot. Eventhough I have high tolerance for hot sauces, 4 of us together have not managed to finish even one of the bottles in several weeks!

There's a big, macho-type competition among hot sauce makers to produce the "hottest sauce on earth." Real "sauces" (that is, stuff that has flavorings beyond pure extract) routinely go past 300k Scovils, and the pure extracts are approaching a million Scovils. 234k Scovils, while plenty hot enough, is far from the "hottest sauce on earth." In fact, it is actually in the middle of the pack of really "hot" sauces you can buy now.
A public thanks to Geoff for giving me a vial of dry smoked Red Savina Habanero ground pepper. Very tasty!

I put hot sauce on everything from fries to pizza. This may sound a little disgusting but I could (and have) drank a half a cup of hot sauce. My favorite would have to either be Crystal or Frank's Red Hot.

Yeah - I loved everything spicy too. It got me stomach problems, and now I cannot eat anything hot at all.

Re: Hot Sauce - 11/02/05 01:13 AM

Frank's Hot Sauce, and their new Buffalo Wing sauce, are two superior products that use cayenne peppers to add flavor and heat, but not to the point of melting your brains out. I however love to soak my foods...steak, wings, pizza, et al with hot sauce, so it's excellent.

Also, the F&T's Anchor Bar sauce, from the originator of chicken wings, is damn good. But for my wing sauce, I just mix up a batch of Franks, add some margerine, and a little more hot pepper to taste.

I had this before:

(4) Dave's Gourmet Insanity Private Reserve, 2004 Limited Edition
Dave's Gourmet Insanity Sauce Private Reserve, 2004 Limited Edition - This sauce is made once a year and is hand numbered, signed & dated. "The Hottest Sauce in the Universe. For the eighth year, I have made this limited edition sauce that is triple the heat of Insanity Sauce. This year's our hottest sauce ever. Rated #4 on our top 20 list, use extreme caution! WARNING: Use this product one-half drop at a time. Keep away from eyes. Not for use by minors or pets. Not for people with heart or respiratory problems. Ingredients: red wine vinegar, chile extract, Red Savina peppers, lime juice, onion puree, JalapeƱo puree, garlic, sugar & spices. From California
5.0 oz. for $24.99

My friend, who's father is a lover of hot sauce, went on a vacation last year and met the guy in charge down there for this sauce. He brought home an unmarked bottle made special by the guy and only sold to those who bought it personally from him and had to sign a waver.

Well, my dip shit friend thought it would be funny to see if I would try it. He told me nothing about it and told me it tasted like Frank's Red Hot Sauce, which is readily available, so I thought nothing of it. He gave me a toothpick and told me to dip about half of it in there.(he had never done so and we were alone unfortunetly so his dad could not warn me.) I did it and quickly gobbled half a toothpick full up. My throat immediately closed up and I started to choke. I went to his fridge and grabbed the milk with all my energy and spilling it everywhere I ended up just pouring it over my face. My friend started to freak out and told me to lie town and relax. I did my best and after 3 hours of really slow breathing and sipping milk, I finally was able to breath normally. I could not taste anything for 2 weeks and was worried I perminently damadged my taste buds, but it did come back.

Moral of the Story: Friends are assclowns.

What is the point of making such hot sauces that need you to be hospitalized for tasting a drop of it. I think it is ridiculous. Hot sauces need to taste good. That is primary. If you want to burn your toungue, try sulphuric acid or something
