White Wine

White Wine - 03/25/12 06:41 PM

I did a search here and found a topic for red wine, but not white, so I thought I would start one. My husband and I usually drink red, mostly merlot, but my daughter prefers white, so we've been drinking more white lately.

We recently went to Whole Foods and bought a bottle of Three Wishes chardonnay for $2.99. It was a bit sweet for my taste, but certainly tolerable, especially for the price. Then on a trip to Best Cellars, we found a label named Lost Vineyards that had several different wines from various countries. We enjoyed the Bianco, which they called an Italian table wine. My daughter tried the chardonnay and liked it, but I didn't have any, so I can't recommend it. I also bought a Sangiovese, but haven't tried it yet. They were all $3.33. I figured at that price, if I didn't like, I could always cook with it.

Any preferences/recommendations out there?

Edit: Here's a review of Three Wishes, which I didn't realize was made for Whole Foods. http://www.slashfood.com/2010/12/06/cheap-wine-at-whole-foods/

The Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio has long been my favorite white wine, but in a pinch I'll go with anything that's light and generally not too sweet.

Ruffino makes a very drinkable and reasonably priced Orvieto that we go through like iced iced in the summer months lol.

Santa Margherita is lovely, and our local Shop Rite Liquor store sells it for $17, which is the cheapest I've ever seen it. However, these inexpensive whites have been a real find, especially come summer. I used to buy a lovely white from a little vineyard in Armenia, NY at the Bronxville farmer's market, but the guy stopped showing up. One of my favorite whites is a California chardonnay called Morro Bay. It's not very easy to find, but when I do, I grab several bottles.

I love that market, Babe. When we visit my Dad (he lives in Lake Isle, Eastchester) we usually stop if it's open that day. Most of the same vendors are at the Tuckahoe market on Sundays. It's in the parking lot of the Tuckahoe Metro North station.

The winery in Armenia was Cascade Mountain and the wine was Summertide - we went through it by the case in the warm weather (they named it correctly!). My brother had his wife's 50th birthday party there and we all went home with bottles. They'll even do custom labels, which is nice.

Toasted Head Chardonnay is very good. Kim Crawford New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is excellent. My all time favorite is a Burgundy: Corton-Charlemagne. But it's very expensive.

I do enjoy a nice white burgundy, but most are expensive. The Louis Jadot Bourgogne Chardonnay or Macon-Village is usually available in the mid-teens and isn't bad.

Any kind of Pinot Grigio rocks my boat, whilst my wife prefers a nice Chardonnay!! So we comprimise and buy a bottle of each. The problem with wine though is that it is supposed to be sipped and savoured, whilst i tend to just pour it down my neck so i can get to my cans of beer in the fridge that are getting all lonely there in the dark........ tongue

I pretty much gave up on red wine about a year and ahalf ago because I was having some kind of reaction to the sulfites or something, but my all time favorite red was the 1982 Chateau Margaux. I have had several great red Burgundies... all the aforesaid is very pricey. On the mre moderate side there are some great pinot noirs from Oregon.

Lately I have been drinking Sauvignon Blanc. From New Zealand, Cupcake and Nobilo, from South Africa Two Oceans and cheapest of all from Chile 120.

Sauvignon Blanc from NZ is uniformly good. Costco here sells the excellent Kim Crawford for $10.

Best wines I've ever had were '52 Mouton Rothchild and '59 Dom Perignon. Someone gave me a '37 Echezaux but it was over the hill, as was a '63 Romanee Conti.

I'm not a big fan of the Whites... take that however you want lol wink

But really, I've always preferred heavy/dry reds over any whites.

New Jersey has at least 34 different wineries/vineyards, and my goal is to hit each at least once. Two down, 32 to go!

Follow me on Foursquare to see me reaching my goal...

LOL DC....For people who live in the Tampa Bay area Berns is like the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building is to New Yorkers. We never go unless someone from out of town is visiting.

That's the least of Geoff's issues. Here he is at a sitdown in Jersey a few years back:

Hey Turnbull,

I tried a very nice Chilean Sauvignon Blanc last night called Lapostolle. Only $6.99 for a 750ml at a local mom and pop store in Pelham Bay. You could probably do it for at least a dollar cheaper at one of your Arizona wine haunts.

If you haven't tried it, give it a shot smile.

i got a bottle of homemade white wine from west virginia earlier in the week, still had the grapeskins inside the bottle. after i filtered it, i was surprised how smooth it was. a little on the sweet side for my liking, but being that it was free it was a score, definatly very drinkable!

Thanks, I'll look for it.

Been having a field day ever since Trader Joe opened within walking distance of my home. Seldom have to pay more than $5.99 for good wine.

FF, 35 years ago, the only states that made decent wine were CA and NY (very little in NY). Now every state, including Alaska, makes halfway decent wine, and some is very good--even here in AZ. Over in NM, Gruet makes some very good sparkling wine from grapes grown at 4,500 feet, which must be some kind of record.

But TB has to pay the fines for drunk walking ... it all evens out in the end.

lol

SC, this here's a "less-law" state. The AZ Legislature a few years ago defeated a bill to ban texting while driving. The committee chair said, "We already have too many laws in this state." tongue

I am a fan of Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. It sells for $12.99 in a grocery chain and for &7.99 at a small private variety store a few blocks away. Go figure.
