Foods You Don't Like?
I was interested in what foods the folks don't like?
We talk all about the stuff we do like so i just wanted the flip side of it. Besides when i have everyone over for dinner i need to know what not to cook
Only two things i don't really care for are butter which has made me feel sick since i was a kid and cauliflower cheese which is strange cos i love cauliflower and i love cheese
Mix them together though and i go green......

That's so funny, Yogi! I'm the exact opposite. I can't eat cauliflower unless it's covered with cheese, or batter dipped and fried - in other words, disguised in some way. If I have to look at cauliflower, it reminds me too much of brains, and I can't eat it.
I like most foods (and I look it, btw), with the exception of some vegetables. I can't stand brussel sprouts or lima beans, for example. I also don't care for most fish, except for shellfish, which I love. Oh, and I dislike most berries, especially strawberries and raspberries. I do love blueberries and blackberries, though. I think with the other berries, I don't like the seeds.
And with the exception of desserts made with strawberries and raspberries, I pretty much love dessert.

Liver! Liver! Liver! I can't even stand the smell of it.
A close second will be beets.

SB, i love brussel sprouts.
Beth, i love liver and beets.
I don't really have a sweet tooth as such but i do eat desserts...but only 3 times a day

I love liver, too. The first time I ever had lunch with Plawrence, I ordered calves liver. He was completely put off. I haven't had beets since I was a kid, but I don't remember disliking them.
Yogi, my husband loves them, too. He dislikes peas and artichokes, though, which I love, so we rarely have those. And pasta with peas is one of my favorite dishes, and I haven't had it in years.
My kids hate nuts and beans, which we like, so it's pretty hard to get a meal going in our house, unless it consists of broccoli, steak and macaroni and cheese, three things we all agree on!

Re: Foods You Don't Like? - 05/18/09 03:04 PM
I guess I wont' be invited to either of your houses for dinner..haha.
Another food I'm not too fond of is cranberry sauce. I think really my sister Angel is the only one who likes it. I had Thanksgiving meal at my house one time. I bought a can of sauce just for her. I opened the can, and the sauce slid right off the plate and onto the floor. I said, "Boo hoo, no cranberry sauce for you". We all started singing, "On top of spaghetti all covered with cheese. I lost my poor meatball when somebody sneezed....". My family's wierd, what can I say. Now you know where I get it.

I know he hated liver. We went to a deli once and he ordered a tongue sandwich (that shit grosses me out) so I ordered chopped liver on purpose. He had the nerve to ask me how I could eat that.
Besides tongue, I absolutely abhor cottage cheese. It looks like something I threw up when I was REALLY sick. Just the word "curd" makes me wanna puke.
I don't like most beans, although I love baked beans.
I can't eat sushi but I like most baked or cooked fish.
I'm not a big fan of tomatoes but I love pizza, ketchup and tomato-based pasta sauces.

Eldest son Michael doesn't eat chips(fries), yet he eats other forms of potato. Andrew does not like mushrooms and Jennifer hates tomatoes, yet loves pizza's.

Re: Foods You Don't Like? - 05/19/09 12:30 PM
Beth, I don't eat cranberry sauce either. Whenever I have Thanksgiving, my mother makes some from scratch, otherwise there's a very real risk of there not being any at all. My mother-in-law has been known to bring a can, just in case.
I forgot about cottage cheese. That's just nasty stuff.
Yogi, my girls have the same eating oddities. My one daughter loves ice cream, loves cake, but won't eat ice cream cake. My other daughter loves jelly on bread, loves cream cheese on bread, but won't eat cream cheese and jelly together. The oldest loves chicken, the youngest can't stand it. One loves spinach, the other hates it. One loves green beans, the other won't eat them.

I'm not a big fan of tomatoes but I love pizza, ketchup and tomato-based pasta sauces.
Ditto on the above. I enjoy all seafood, except sushi. I can live without tomatoes on subs and in salads, but I love ketchup, pasta and pizza sauces.
What I dislike most is mayonnaise. It gives me the creeps. As a result I don't eat creamy salad dressing or macaroni or potato salad.
I don't care for mushrooms either. And I don't like ricotta cheese.
I love apples, apple pie, apple streudel, apple tarts, muffins, cobbler and cake. I love apple cider and baked apples, but I can not get myself to eat apple sauce.

There are not too many foods that I don't like. My Mom was a stickler when it came to me and my brother eating whatever she managed to put on the table. We had to eat liver, tripe, sweetbreads . . . all that stuff. When you're a 5 year old kid and you've already tried calves brains, there's very little left to gross you out. But I wouldn't go out of my way to have them today. And when it comes to fruits and veggies, I can't even think of a single one that I wouldn't eat.

Now being on nights for a while again, i always take something in for a midnight snack. Last night i took in a shop bought tuna pasta salad, something i usually like!
This one however was rank. Enough to put me off it for life. Can that happen to you with food? One bad experience, eating something you like(that is horrible) and it puts you off that food forever?

Re: Foods You Don't Like? - 06/15/10 07:56 PM
About the only thing I don't like foodwise -- beets, cooked carrots (like raw carrots) and baked sweet potato (though I love sweet potato fries)
The first 23 years of my life I did not eat cranberry sauce 9from a can) as it looked like beets and I could not fathom to eat something that looks like something I detested. then I broke down and tried the cranberry sauce and have been eating ever since.
I never thought I would like mountain oysters until I was "tricked" into eating them. Ever since it has not been a problem - not that I go out of my way to eat them.

Re: Foods You Don't Like? - 06/15/10 08:42 PM
Here is a partial list, with some contradictions noted:
Liver. Absolutely abhor it. Even the smell of cooking liver makes me queasy.
Eggs. Scrambled, poached, etc. Actually, any eggs from the frying pan are revolting to me. Especially the odor. And yet, I don't mind them hard boiled or cooked into a dish (I love pasta carbonara, for example).
Most meats that are organs: kidneys, heart, brain, etc.
Yogurt. Hate it. But if it's cooked into something, then it's tolerable.
These are the first ones that come to mind. Doubtless, I'll eventually remember others.

I really don't know how to be politically correct, so I'll just ask. My best friend of the last 30 years is a black man. Eggs and mayonnaise make him cringe. He literally runs from me when he sees me eating either of these things. He says, and I'm quoting here, Brothers don't do mayonnaise

The mayonnaise thing is overblown I think. You can't really quickly make potato salad without mayonnaise. On the other hand there might be a cultural predilection towards spicier foods -have you seen that "mayo" scene in "Undercover Brother-but this is likely as much regional (southern) as it is ethnic.
As far as the eggs, nope. I just never liked them. Everyone else in my family did. This would cause epic battles as a kid when my parents would expect me to finish everything on my plate and I would-EXCEPT for any sort of egg. Once they realized I wasn't just being deliberately defiant
things were cool...

I can't remember what the latino guys were crazy about...I seem to recall them liking pineapple juice. I could be wrong? "Pop" is definitely midwestern speak.

We should call it soda?
No way it is called POP!!!
When I lived in VA my boss use to have go on a sody pop run.
Oh yeah I hate turnip greens, mustard greens, spinach.
I think it is a Midwestern term. When I lived in Michigan it was always "pop."
When I first moved to California, 30 years ago, we went to a restaurant and I asked what kind of pop do you have. The waitress said, "you're not from around here are you?"
It's been soda ever since. Now, when I hear my family in Michigan refer to "pop" it sounds so weird.
TIS
You sillies. It's coke.
(And I see I fit the map...
)
TIS, my 4th grade teacher would say "pop," and though I hadn't thought of this recently, I wanna say she was from Michigan. My classmates teased her about it!
I have to wonder what "other" is...? My grandpa is funny - he'll often say "so-dee water" or "so-dee pop."

Um, "Coke" is a
brand name for a
specific cola-flavored soda (pop). How would you order a Pepsi (infinitely better than Coke, BTW) or root beer or 7-Up, by saying "coke" all the time? Pepsi-coke? Root Beer-coke? 7-Up-coke?
I wouldn't order a Pepsi. I'd order a Coke.
And Coke happens to be a type of coke.

So down South, someone can ask you what kind of pop -excuse me-

That's almost as good as going down South to visit relatives and having "dinner" at noon while the evening meal is called "supper".

In Texas it's always been Coke or Dr. Pepper although I started out asking for pop.
Thanks Mama Mig, but there's just no pleasing Geoff when it comes to the English language.
Okay...Lilo's taunting inspired me to ask my parents.
My dad says he used to do exactly that as a kid - he'd ask his dad if he could have a coke, and then he'd say a Dr. Pepper is what he wanted. Then when I argued that it's fine to say that, he laughed! But all he drinks are Cokes anyway, so what does he know?
My mom says "soda water." So I'm polling Facebook friends to find out the "truth" about Houston.
But whatever someone eats at noon oughta be called lunch.

Exactly. Y'all can argue about "soda" and "pop" and "coke" (the latter means cocaine here, by the way
) ... it's obvious that lunch is mid-day. I have yet to figure out the difference between "supper" and "dinner", but I almost always say "dinner" for the third (main) meal of the day.

Because Coca-Cola originally contained cocaine, hence the "coca" in the title. This was back in the day when cocaine was sold over the counter, of course. Eventually, when public opinion changed about the casual attitude towards certain drugs, they took it out and people then complained that it no longer gave them a kick, so they added caffeine. Spokespersons for the company will now pooh-pooh the amount of cocaine, saying it was "trivial".

I'm not a fan of liver, but I don't hate it. I don't like oysters, but LOVE clams and scallops. I've never tried squid or octopus, and have no desire ever to do so.

I've never tried squid or octopus, and have no desire ever to do so.
I quite understand - and catching them can be difficult!
I don't like grapefruit or grapefruit juice.
Me neither. Too acidic and bitter for me, even if I try to load it up with sugar. Oranges and orange juice I like, but definitely not grapefruit. Besides, it always reminds me of the old James Cagney movie:
I can't stand (read: loathe) liver. Also, eggs in almost any form when they're served alone: scrambled, poached, over easy, etc.
Also do not like anything that is still alive and flopping around on my plate when it is served. I know in some cultures this is considered a delicacy, but it's not for me.
So, I guess I will not end up as a guest on that cable TV show
Bizarre Foods or anything like that. Let Andrew Zimmern, Anthony Bourdain and their ilk chow down on fermented sloth gonads, and all that sort of thing. I'll stay home and make a tuna sandwich.

Re: Foods You Don't Like? - 02/07/12 04:36 PM
I can't believe what I'm reading here!
Butter, strawberries, raspberries, peas, nuts, cottage cheese, pickles, bananas, eggs, yogurt, mayo, grapefruit, fish -- those rank among my favorites! lol
I also can't believe it was 2.5 years ago when I said I'll get back to the question, and apparently didn't!
There are very few things I dislike, and the list gets shorter as I get older as I like to try things again and guess what? Many things I didn't like as a kid now I like!
Liver is the exception. I try it now and again and still dislike it. But I LOVE liverwurst!
I haven't tried other organ meats (brains, kidneys, testes, etc), but I'd probably try them once...from someone else's plate. As for muscle meat, I never met an animal I didn't like. Then again, I haven't tried Mig's hillbilly rodent diet, so wouldn't be too crazy about trying possum, squirrel, 'coon, etc -- but I would. Haven't tried snake, but alligator is good.
I like all seafood (including sushi) except sea urchin. Tried it once as sushi and it was disgusting. But I'd try it again as who knows how fresh it was. All fish, clams, mussels, oysters, squid, octopus. Not seafood I suppose, but I also love escargot (snails).
Off the top of my head I cannot think of many fruits or veggies I dislike. Canned veggies (except corn and peas) are nasty, tho. Not a fan of pickled beets. Avoided cooked cabbage most of my life but tried it again last St Patty's Day and it was actually quite good! Love Brussels sprouts, so it's not a far reach I suppose. I'm not crazy about the bitterness of white asparagus, but love green asparagus. Slimy okra is nasty, but it's been a while.
Often it's just a texture thing -- I love tomatoes, I love tomato sauce, but can't stand chunks of tomatoes or slivers of its skin in my sauce. Same for too many slimy green peppers (tho raw they're good, and I don't mind slimy red or orange or yellow peppers - go figure).
LOVE my beef tongue, of course!
My friend drives me crazy, though. She hates mayo, sour cream, ketchup (except when it's mixed with mustard), pancakes (!), peas/lima beans (texture), chocolate (!), milk (except in coffee)... oy. And she's my co-foodie-in-crime!

Oh, and shoot me here -- but I really dislike Braciole (involtini), but that could be because the times I've had it it just sucked.

"Casu marzu" in Italian: formaggio marcio "rotten cheese") is a Sardinian sheep milk cheese, notable for containing live insect larvae. It is found mainly in Sardinia, Italy.
I'm half Sardinian and I personally do not like it.

Generally speaking, unless it's been on Fear Factor or an Anthony Bourdain special, I'll try anything once. And I like almost everything. I grew up eating organ meats once or twice a week because they were cheap. We ate calves liver, tripe, sweetbreads, chicken livers and gizzards, etc. a couple times a week. I still eat these foods once in a while because I like them.

It's too much of a challenge for me!
I just read the article Geoff linked to in his post above, and that settles the matter once and for all. Cheese with jumping maggots? Intestinal problems from one (or more) of those little bastards playing "Destination: Colon" and hitching a ride into my innards?
NFW I think I'll leave food like that to the guys on the reality shows.

I won't eat honey. I haven't touched it since I was about 5 years old. I won't eat olives either. Some obvious ones I won't have are nasty things like insects or gophers or something strange like that LOL.

Another thing I find utterly repulsive is blood sausage. I tried it once and I was throwing up for days. Disgusting!!

Reese's Peanut Butter cups. I used to LOVE them until I opened one that was filled with worms and eggs. Now that the THOUGHT of one makes me barf.

Stuff like that happens to me sometimes, but I don't avoid it forever -- I just look more closely the next time.
Reminds me when I was cracking open eggs for my mom and I was horrified and disgusted when one had a fucking
chicken inside it -- feathers and all!
...but I still love eggs!

What the hell?! That's crazy, I definitely would have been scarred for life. That could have made a great lawsuit.

Lot of these items I haven't heard of . I was thinking when people are starving such as the people on Donnor's Pass just how far we would go ? Arm of Larry or a leg of Mary ? Just wondering. Ok, so it cold out ! Didn't mean to upset everyones cookies here.
How about lizzards, gator, and stuff down in the swamp ? That work.

Mayonnaise is the first thing that comes to mind. I'm not fond of mushrooms. Except for a few of the fattier deli meats, I can't think of any meats that I dislike. I've had alligator quite a few times and on three occasions was served rattlesnake, which was pretty good. I can eat tripe, liver and other organ meats, but it's not my first choice. Rocky Mountain oysters are okay if you can get past it mentally.

Quite a description, Yogi! I'd settle for a food that would put some hairs back on my head!
Today I started reading "The Year of Eating Dangerously" by Tom Parker Bowles. I have a sneaking suspicion that this book is best read on an empty stomach.

One thing Gentleman and I do not say that lightly . We aren't some lightweights. SV, I sure would agree about the hair. I am not Gentle Ben , but wish I could have kept some on the top knot LOL !
I have never had blood pudding before . Yogi, could I get your little ladys ? Do your kids like it ?
