Weird Food Combinations - 09/10/07 02:27 PM

Everyone has an odd combination of foods that sound disgusting, but that they love. For example, I love tuna salad with bologna and melted swiss on toast, which I guess would be a tuna melt plus bologna. I'd love to hear some from the others here.

Peanut butter and sliced bananas on white bread.

A hamburger with a sliced knish as its buns.

One of Nicole's favorites. She swears by it. I swear at her.

I like applesauce on toast. Don't know how weird that is. But I've been called worse. :_

I don't think it's too weird, but it tasty - roast beef with potato salad on a hard roll.

Beth, you and I will definitely share a sandwich! Do you mind adding a little mustard?

I haven't done it in years, but when I was younger I would make potato chip sandwiches on white bread with mayo.

Re: Weird Food Combinations - 09/11/07 01:40 AM

There were two things that Signora V. liked which might be considered a trifle unusual:

Two eggs (scrambled) served with Miracle Whip. Sometimes with fried bologna on the side.

A small mug filled with Sacramento tomato juice and crumbled saltine crackers. When everything was softened up enough, she'd eat it with a spoon. She called this "Tomato Surprise".

Re: Weird Food Combinations - 09/11/07 01:50 AM

Sometimes these odd combinations is truly part of what makes us unique isn't it? Everyone's taste can be so different.

I can't say I've heard of eggs with mayo, but every now and then I will cut up a couple hot dogs, fry them til very dark and scramble in eggs. Add a slice of Italian bread on the side, and I'd call that a dinner (or breakfast :D)

I know many have heard of this, but I remember my great uncle cracking a raw egg into his shot of whiskey and guzzling it down in one big gulp. Us kids were little and would watch him and all say ewwwwwwwwww"

I have (and it doesn't appeal to me). There's a place near Times Square (a small store) that sells nothing but french fries... they're slighty thicker than those sold in McDonald's (and a lot better)... you get them served in paper cones and their big selling point is the different dipping sauces you can get with them... I think its the Belgian style that gives you mayo with them.

I'm a traditionalist when it comes to french fries... I like the thick, crinkle cut fries (like those sold in Nathan's) with salt, pepper and ketchup. (The crinkle cut actually gives the potato more surface area with which to fry better than a standard steak cut fry).

A perfect lunch for me (and a real treat) is a good hamburger with good fries and ketchup.

A sloppy joe with potato chips in a bun. Great taste and just the right amount of texture and crunch.
Posted By: J Geoff

Re: Weird Food Combinations - 09/11/07 08:24 AM

Don't get me wrong now, I usually do use ketchup... but now and then I turn to the mayo, which I learned a few years back from the kids I was counseling -- I don't think E.D. kids have food issues, do they? lol -- but it IS very good.

I love McD's fries -- but they HAVE to be fresh and hot! Otherwise they (like all fries not fresh and hot) suck \:\/
Posted By: J Geoff

Re: Weird Food Combinations - 09/11/07 08:27 AM

Speaking of McDonalds and fries... I used to (and sometimes still do) put a single layer of fries on my Quarter Pounder...

I hardly ever eat that stuff anymore, but the other day just had to try that new "Third Pounder" Angus burger that's being tested in our area before national roll-out. It was very tasty ...but then there's that usual rock-in-your-stomach feeling that follows most fastfood! lol

Agreed... Mickey D's fries, when cold, are absolutely terrible.

Dunno if you have a Checker's anywhere near you, but its a fast food chain that has decent fries (they're slightly larger than McD's and they're really seasoned well).

I'll have a taste for White Castle belly bombers every so often but I NEVER get their fries (they're God-awful).
Posted By: J Geoff

Re: Weird Food Combinations - 09/11/07 08:34 AM

There's a Checkers within half mile of the McDonalds, Burger King, and White Castle... and Wendy's close enough... from me. Of course! lol

I tried Checkers once or twice a while back -- the fries are pretty good... but apparently the burgers weren't good enough for me to go back apparently... don't recall... I don't think about it much, cuz I don't "cave" more than a few times a year usually...

But still, if they're hot and fresh, McD's fries rule

Coney Island Nathans French Fries were the best! Served piping hot in the paper cone, put into the bag, and then you poured the salt on them, pumped the ketchup in the bag, closed it up and shook it all around. The best!

What is it that make us crave those damn belly bombers? They're so good going down, but once they settle in your stomach, my goodness, like you ate rocks! After you're done you say "never again," and then a few montsh later you're craving them!

I may have mentioned this over in another topic, but one of the best fast food Burgers and Fries that I ever had was when I was in California. In and Out Burger. Fast food but fresh. The fresh cut french fries were excellent as were the Burgers.

And let's not forget Roll and Roaster in Sheepshead Bay for burgers and cheese fries. Simply the best!

Re: Weird Food Combinations - 09/11/07 12:31 PM

For the best french fries you've EVER had, try Thrasher's on the boardwalk in Ocean City, MD.

I'm not a huge fan of vinegar, but grab yourself a bucket of those fries, load 'em up with salt, pepper, and vinegar, and die happy (albeit with clogged arteries.)

As far as weird food combinations, I'm usually game to try anything, so nothing is really weird to me, except:

potato salad (potatoes and mayonnaise)
macaroni salad (macaroni and mayonnaise)
pasta salad (pasta and mayonnaise)
egg salad (hard boiled eggs and mayonnaise)

I like ranch dressing, though. \:p

Amen brother!

I also like Egg Salad. \:\)

Re: Weird Food Combinations - 09/11/07 03:00 PM

Egg Salad is delicious. As is chicken salad, tuna salad, potato salad and macaroni salad. However, I hate most store-bought salads, and will usually only eat home-made. My secret for potato salad? 2/3 mayo and 1/3 sour cream. YUM!!

As for my fries, I like McD's, White Castle's, Nathan's, almost all fries. There was a fast food chain around here called Ranch One that had great fries, but all of them seem to have closed.

I like my fries plain, though, extra-crispy with just salt. I may add ketchup when they've cooled down. For some reason, I don't like the room-temperature ketchup with piping hot fries.

Re: Weird Food Combinations - 09/11/07 05:27 PM

Oh well let's see now..

I like peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Also, peanut butter and cucumber sandwiches. I put potato chips on my peanut butter sandwiches sometimes. I think you could put anything on a PB sandwich and it'll be good.

I dip my macaroni and cheese in ketchup (but I know a lot of people who do that, so I guess it isn't too weird)

My friend puts Ranch on dressing on EVVVVERYYTHING. I saw her put it on her leftover spaghetti the other night. I laughed at her. Haha.

That's all I can think of at the moment though.

How about stuffed poblanos? They can be absolutely delicious!

Pickle juice was mentioned earlier in this thread. This one was a particular favorite of Signora V. She was partial to (but not limited to) Vlasic Polish Dill Spears, and the juice in the jar became her property once the pickles were gone.

For some reason I only really like green bell peppers when they're raw - I'm not a big fan of the sliminess they become when cooked. But red or yellow peppers, I have no problem with... weird.

Poblano peppers are good, but my favorite is habenero Don't know if I'd stuff them, tho! \:o ...but I add julienned habanero (and garlic) to all my stir-fries

Hint: You don't need gloves when slicing very hot peppers -- just freeze them first! Need to slice one, just grab it out of the freezer, by the stem, then slice away... don't use the whole thing? Just return it to the bag for next time... Frozen peppers apparently last at least 2 years in the freezer (I still have a bunch in there I grew 2 years ago that are just fine!)... but once they're cut, use them within a few weeks at least...

A co worker of mine always made these for any work luncheon. Every where she goes people want her to make this recipe. I tried it at home. I think they're good, but my daughter found them too sweet. You put the jelly and chili sauce on the bottom and let them melt, then put the meatballs on top.

I've been told that the act of putting Ketchup on scrambled eggs supposedly originated in the Military because they used powdered eggs and the soldiers used to smother them in Ketchup in order to cover up the horrible taste of powdered eggs.

This is a well known topping and not really weird to most people except me, but.......I love pineapple and I love ham, but please keep both off of a pizza. One's a Sunday dinner and one's a good juice. They don't belong on pizza.

They now have some kind of Mexican pizza with jalapenos. I can't even imagine that. It's simply not a pizza anymore.

Thats what I've been saying all along. I'm a traditionalist. Pizza should be sauce and cheese on a crust. Start adding some God-awful toppings to it and it just ain't pizza anymore.

There should be a law against calling that crap "pizza".

I can't even get past ham and pineapples as a toppings. And that's going back probably 10 years.

You guys have no imagination whatsoever! \:p

What about keeping with just "Italian" items?

What about ziti? Zito pizza is great!

I once got a meatball/chicken/veal parm pie... awesome.

What about a White Pie (usually mozzarella, ricotta and broccoli (or sliced tomato) -- no tomato sauce? (I'd add garlic to that one) Awesome!

I did try a Shrimp Scampi pizza from one of the good places around here, but that was just nasty - but not because of the ingredients, but how it came out \:\/ ...but I'd try it again somewhere else!

Granted, standard pizza is the best -- but "gourmet" pizzas are a good alternative, too! Taste great, and more filling

Well you're partially right about that. But sauce and cheese(s) are what is mostly served on their pizza. You can get a white pie, and eggplant pie or a dry sausage / pepperoni pie.

And they sure as hell DON'T serve pizza with focking cheddar cheese or pineapple on it!

But the shit that YOU talk about and call a pizza IS just outright criminal! Only a fake Italian would call those pizzas! ;\)

I did try a chicken francese slice once and have to admit that it was delicious. But it's NOT a pizza! It's an open faced chicken franchese with mozzarella baked on pizza dough!

You know, SB, I was going to mention those. I've never tried them, but they were selling them at Kennywood when I went a couple months ago. I'll have to try them the next time I go.

I've also been to a restaurant somewhere (can't remember where), where they were selling deep-fried pickles, I believe. Anyone ever heard of that?

I have heard of deep-fried pickles, but have never had them.

My daughter coated them in a pancake-like batter and then deep-fried them. They were delicious. Now I see that there are places also selling deep-fried twinkies. I love an occasional twinkie as much as the next person, but I'm not sure I'd like it fried. Like they aren't bad enough for you, so let's stick them in a big oil jacuzzi??

You know what? I too have had the hot pocket Calzone. I'm getting to cook less and less. Not too bad for a quick meal but nothing like the real thing. Of course, I have never made calzone myself but I'd like to try.

A couple months ago I get a flyer on my door for a new Pizza Factory opening. The pictures of the food looked wonderful. One of the pictures on the flyer was of calzone. I kept that stupid flyer on my fridge for about a month, thinking I'm gonna go there soon and buy the calzone. My mouth was watering. How gullible is that?

A few weeks later, my kids happened to be over to use the pool here in my complex and visit for a while. I showed them that picture and said, "I'll treat. Let's go get some Italian food.

Good thing, I asked the waiter if there is ricotta in their calzone and he said "NO". WTF It had provolone, mozzarella and whatever other items you wanted. Yea, I should have known with a name like Pizza Factory! Oh, and I ended up ordering a meatball parm sandwich and guess what??? Maybe had 3 small meatballs in the wholse sandwich. Pathetic

Re: Weird Food Combinations - 09/14/07 12:54 AM

Provolone in a calzone? YUK. Sounds like "Factory" was a good name for the place.

JG, please tell me you don't eat Spaghetti-Os!! I begged my mom for Spaghetti-Os when I was a kid. My mom finally caved in and bought them for me. I took one taste and spit them out. My mother put them in the dog's dish. She took one sniff and ran away. For years, my mom would tell the story and finish it off with, And the DOG wouldn't even eat them!!

You're joking with us, right?

If you really think that they are great than do yourself a favor.

Go and buy a couple of cans of Tuttorusso crushed tomatoes with basil in it. Slice up a couple of cloves of fresh garlic. slice and dice a half an onion. Make sure that it is diced very fine. Get a 1/2 pound of sirloin chopped meat.

Warm up a sauce pan on a med flame and then coat the bottom with about a 1/4 inch of extra virgin olive oil. When olive oil is warm to hot, throw in your fresh garlic and onions. Add in some parsely, oregano and basil. Stir until the onions and garlic are begining to brown and then add in your chop meat.

Stir chopmeat combining with other ingredients until chop meat is brown. Now add in the two cans of Tuttorusso sauce and stir. Add a little more orageno, some more parsely, basil, a touch of sugar, and some fresh grated cheese to the sauce and stir. Bring the flame down to low, use a pot cover and cover only half the pot with it. Let cook for a couple of hours on low, stirring and tasting occassionally and season accordingly to your taste.

Get yourself some spaghetti. Bring the appropriate amount of water to a boil, add salt and then add your Pasta. Stir the pasta so that the salt gets around and prevents the pasta from sticking together. Cook pasta to desired tenderness, usually 8 - 10 minutes.

Drain you pasta in a collander, then place pasta in a large pasta bowl and add your meat sauce mixing it in with the pasta.

Now you have a REAL ITALIAN dish, not that shit, fake, spaghetti O / beef-a-roni / hamburger helper junk.

Of course you can do this with Angel hair Pasta, Elbow macaroni, Ziti, or whatever pasta you enjoy. I just suggested using Spaghetti to give you the affect of a spaghetti o (just typing the word spaghetti O makes me want to puke) type dish.

And Geoff, you being from an Italian family and all, you should be ashamed of yourself for desicrating the Italian culture by eating that shit! Next time we get together for dinner, you will NOT be allowed to eat in an Italian restaurant with us. NO MORE REAL ITALIAN FOOD FOR YOUUUUU!

You can go down the block to Pizza Hut and then meet us for drinks after dinner! \:p ;\)

What gave you that impression?

Hot wings are great! They're just incredibly fatty and caloric cuz they're deep-fried, and the "hot sauce" is basically just melted butter with hot sauce added to it... mmmm... awesome \:D

Fried chicken wings are great, too - and I actually prefer them when they're a bit less meaty and almost overdone.

Anyway, did this topic turn into Random Food Whoring? (I was actually thinking of starting that \:D )

Re: Weird Food Combinations - 09/15/07 05:10 AM

Well, I figured some people like wings. My whole family thinks I'm odd because I prefer the wings and can eat them for a meal. I also don't mind the neck. \:p

Since we're random food whoring, does anyone bread their chicken? Even wings. Lightly dip chickin in oil and add a tad of lemon juice, garlic salt (or bake with garlic cloves) and dip in Italian seasoned bread crumbs. Very tasty. \:\)
