"The Name Game" The GodFather

Posted By: Lucky_Luciano

"The Name Game" The GodFather - 02/27/03 08:18 PM

Here is how this works...first you give the name of the character in the film The GodFather (part 1 only) and give a brief discription in your own words about the character. Let the name Game begin... grin

(please do not name the same character as someone else..)

Posted By: joelga

Re: "The Name Game" The GodFather - 03/14/03 01:47 PM

We are talking about GFI, yes? If so, there are a number of possible answers, though the past tense ("...he thought he was...") narrows it down some. The character must be dead by the end of the movie.

Sollozo gives Tom a pretty long speech about the Don's outdated old world sensibilities and the likely order of succession (when he thinks the old man is dead) amongst the sons, based on his notions of who got what genes from the old man...

Course, Sonny makes a few comments to and about Michael, implying some missing gene, some "white sheep" anomoly-- Mike will never truly be his father's son. He also offends Tom by pointing out he's not Sicilian, can't be a wartime consiglieri...

But I'd have to go with Vito, based on his heart to heart talk with Michael in the garden. The Don passes the reins reluctantly, commenting on the fitness of each of his sons (one now dead) to inherit the crown, so to speak...to carry on the bloodline.

So Vito thinks he's a genealogist.

MY TURN.

This guy knows Latin better than any other in the film, and is probably a virgin.

Welcome, joelga. A screenwriter, huh? You should feel right at home here. And not a teenager, besides.

Well, you make some good points in your analysis. My Funk & Wagnalls defines "genealogist" as "one who traces or studies the descent of persons or families." The answer I was looking for was Woltz, based on his comment to Hagen, calling him my "Kraut-Mick friend".

The answer to your question, I imagine, would be the priest who baptizes Michael Francis Rizzi.

Next question: He wasn't sure exactly how long he'd been back.

Re: "The Name Game" The GodFather - 03/15/03 01:06 PM

Tessio gets ground, or territory, after complaining about having no place to hang his hat. And on this ground he arranges Michael's assasination.

(Luca gets "grounded," to force an electricity analogy having to do with the knife, his hand and the bartop; Michael sort of gets grounded when he has to live in Sicily for a year. But it's Tessio who gets, simply, ground).

OKAY.

Though it's claimed that his huge heterosexual cock is what makes him special, the only time we see him in bed it's clearly revealed that he's given head to his sugar daddy.

PS: That genealogy question I overthought. I was gonna say Woltz...or Moe Greene, who also spits out a racial epithet, though less applicable as a reply to the question posed.
Posted By: plawrence

Re: "The Name Game" The GodFather - 03/15/03 02:11 PM

If you mean he's given his head to his sugar daddy (altho I'm not sure I understand the "sugar daddy" reference as it would apply to Woltz), I'll say Khartoum. Oh...I got the "sugar daddy" reference....Woltz gives him a little snack in the barn with Hagen.

Re: "The Name Game" The GodFather - 03/17/03 09:03 AM

Gotta go with Michael, on three occasions:

He (sort of) echoes Kay when she calls and says "Tell me you love me"...and he is never quite there to come and play with her...

He echoes the priest during the baptism, again sort of. "Do you renounce Satan?"

And there's a phone call with Tom where Michael repeats a lot of what Tom says...Hello? Hello. Hello? Hello....

Course, there's Vito mocking Johnny Fontaine at the beginning, and there's Enzo, ("Enzo, the baker, the baker...for your father, for your father.") And there Fabrizio, translating. And there's Sonny, angry on the phone (Son of a bitch...again and again.

But gotta go with MICHAEL.

now...

THIS CHARACTER will need a shoeshine to remove footprints from the tops of his shoes.

Re: "The Name Game" The GodFather - 03/17/03 10:56 AM

Nice try, and a fair analysis (again). Unlike the "Dialouge Game", this game involves a great deal of subjectivity, so I gues it's not fair to tell someone they have the wrong answer when their analysis supports their response.

That said, however, the answer I was looking for was Calo. If you watch the Sicilian sequences, you will notice several instances where Fabrizzio says something, and then Calo echos him by repeating Fabrizzio's last few words.

Your question: Tessio

Tom Hagen is carrying a sled when he's kidnapped by Sollozzo. (Winter sports).

NOTE: I prefer sticking with GFI...

THIS CHARACTER has a future working for Hallmark, but will have to get to work by bus, subway or cab if hired today (1946).

Re: "The Name Game" The GodFather - 03/18/03 01:05 AM

Vito's grandchild (too young to drive a car)--which one I couldn't tell you--who presents the Don with a get well card upon his return from the hospital.

Q. G. Gordon Liddy and Howard Hunt had nothing on this character.
Posted By: joelga

Re: "The Name Game" The GodFather - 03/18/03 08:16 AM

Gonna go with Tom Hagen, as he so often arranges the dirty tricks and cover-ups for his Godfather...
(But if it's just about breaking into a hotel room, and you're allowing GFII moments, then Ola's killer could be the guy).

I need a little more in the clue. My Hallmark question might have been answered CLEMENZA ("I love-a you with all my heart...If I don't see you soon I'm-a gonna die." Certainly a Hallmark sentiment). But the car/subway/bus clue points to a kid-- Frankie.

Many things about Hunt and Liddy can apply to many characters (Loyal soldiers? Involved in break-ins, bugging? Took a fall for their leader? Once worked for the CIA?) So I don't really know. Luca Brazi's backstory has him doing a lot of the dirty work for the Don. (Who put the horse's head in Woltz' bed?) Need that extra little hint. Anyway...

THIS CHARACTER: Likes a quiet workplace. Prefers the furniture just as it is.
Posted By: joelga

Re: "The Name Game" The GodFather - 03/18/03 08:46 AM

Apologize for getting so technical, but I'm a real fan and a real stickler. (In my opinion, a real GF fan does not recognize GFIII as a worthy part of the saga. So excited I was to see it...first screening at Mann's Chinese, opening day, Christmas...Pacino's brushcut, thought I'd get used to it, but turns out it was the first warning sign, George Hamilton being a quick second).

BONUS QUERY: Though we clearly see a Jew calling an Italian a Guinea in a Godfather One Desert Scene, we do not see This Jew and This Guinea playing in the Sand (Plural) of this Same Desert but there is Some Sign that They are There at the Time doing Just That.

Hey lady...
Posted By: plawrence

Re: "The Name Game" The GodFather - 03/18/03 09:20 AM

Again, this is a game with much subjectivity, and your argument for Hagen is a fair one, even thought it's not the answer I was looking for. Perhaps my clue lacked specificity. So here's your extra hint:

Hunt and Liddy were plumbers .

Your bonus query: Sinatra and Joey Bishop (or was it Sammy Davis?) on the Sands Hotel marquee.

Your first question, I'm thinking about.

Trick question, eh? A character from Part I with a reference from Part II.

I'll go with Vito, based on Michael's comment to Pentangeli, something like "This was my father's old study...His desk was over here... We had to be very quiet when we played here"

Plumber connection?

Anthony, at the age of three, can already read the funny papers. So he probably likes cartoons.

MC 14, that's not who I was thinking of either, but a good answer. I guess the problem I'm having here is not realizing that there can be more than one answer based on the way I'm phrasing the question.

Try it this way, same character, different clue:

He knew when to duck.
Posted By: Michael Corleone 14

You got me, it could be Michael, he ducked during the Tahoe-shooting, also during the assasination of Apollonia, but Beth sead Michael, too, and you sead it was wrong. ohwell

Vito? He duck (trickled) during his assasination, and he duck when Don Ciccio's men tried to kill him.

The reference to dropping something was in the novel, but not really indicated in the film. It happened with the toll collector, when Sonny was shot on the causeway. Sonny, who is in a hurry, hands the toll collector some money, and then watches with annoyance as he "drops" it, and bends down (ducks) to pick it up. I can't supply the exact quote at the moment, because I don't keep a copy of the novel in my office (but probably should).

Sorry about that. I'll go to my corner with my dunce cap on, now...

Louie's is the one in the Bronx, MC. The Bronx, BTW, is a "borough" (sort of a separate municipality) that's part of New York City (so is Brooklyn--Tessio's 'ground').

I'm looking for the character that owns one that's not in NYC. More of a "cafe", actually.

It's OK, DC--I declare this game open to any character from the trilogy.

Paulie Gatto did not kill the thugs who attacked Bonasera's daughter. They were beaten severely as their "justice"; however, they were not killed. That is the point of the scene in the study when Vito tells Tom "I want good people. Not people that will get carried away [with the job]. I mean, we're not murderer's no matter what that undertaker says."

In the Novel, it is well written that Paulie's crew beat the hell out of those guys and were told "If those guys get out of the hospital in less than a month, you're [Paulie's guys] going back to driving trucks."

As for the question:

"He was a hot head who died like a dog."

I assume it is Moe Greene - called a hot head by Hyman Roth. It could be Joey Zaza - called a "dog" indirectly, by Michael.

If I'm not wrong (and I probably am):

CrazyMan : it was Sonny.

He was accosted in the shower and wound up taking a bath.

Re: "The Name Game" The GodFather - 11/26/03 11:06 PM

Was it Pentangelli? I thought it was Mike at the end of GF 2 where he explained about what history has taught them, but I could be wrong...

He was accosted in the shower? I'm gonna try Carlo, he was in the shower when Connie went after him, then died in the bloodbath that was the death of the five families...

If I'm wrong, then I gotta reread the book, and watch the trilogy again.
Posted By: tripwire

Re: "The Name Game" The GodFather - 11/27/03 12:38 AM

No, you're right, CrazyMan. The "bath" I was thinking about was when Sonny kicked the crap out of Carlo for hitting Connie and he wound up on his back in the gutter with the fire hydrant pouring water over him. A lovely image. Heh heh.

Next : They were made an offer they couldn't refuse. (Naturally, there's more than one recipient involved. For extra bonus points, name them in chronological order.)

Vito to Genco on his deathbed.

He was the only one in the trilogy to do a full nude scene. rolleyes
Posted By: TheCrazyMan

Re: "The Name Game" The GodFather - 12/19/03 06:48 AM

now, the people who were nude in the whole trilogy:
Tattaglia, Moe green, Senator Geary, and Frankie Five Angels...

Ok, Moe Green had the towel, though u could see his butt crack a little, maybe its not him... Senator geary was with the hooker when she died... he was wearing a bedsheet, can't be him.
Frankie Five Angels when he killed himself in the tub, but you didn't see a thing.
so my guess would be Tattaglia. In the novel, it said he was nude when he was with that young girl, just before he was shot and killed, so I'm gonna say Phillip Tattaglia.

If I'm right

You kinda got the format of the game wrong here, VTG.

This is the "Name Game", not trivia.

You give a clue, and we guess the name of the character to whom the clue applies.

For example, the Hyman Roth question would be more correctly phrased as:
"His real name was Hyman Suchowski"

Your last question would read "He was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon in 19--" (Altho technically speaking, the questions should apply only to characters in the film, not the actors or actresses.)

It's also more fun if you make the clues a little more cryptic, so, for example, the Hyman Roth question could be written as
"His name was once much longer", or something like that.

I can't think of what this would be from the film. But if this thread includes the novel, I would say it has to be Jules fixing Michael's face in exchange for Michael's influence in getting Jules un-blacklisted for performing abortions.
