Guess the Famous Person

Guess the Famous Person - 08/01/12 02:08 AM
TIS had a good idea to open a game for guessing the name of a famous person from an old photo.
I'll start with this bodybuilder. Anyone recognize him?
Uploading a Picture to the BB1) Find a picture on the internet.
2) Right-click on it, and Save to your desktop (so it's easy to find)
3) Go to
http://www.tinypic.com/ and hit Choose File (choose the one you just saved to your desktop)
4) You should then be presented with links, choose the "Forum" link
5) Copy/Paste that link into your post.
You can test the process out first in the
The Official "Test" Thread in the Help Forum to be sure you did it correctly
Wow, good pic SC.
However, I'm not knowledgeable on body builders. Hmmmm. Wasn't there one named Atlas?
Looks like a very old picture. Maybe from the 20s?

Re: Guess the Famous Person - 08/01/12 02:30 AM
OK, two "hints" to start. The picture was ca. 1950. He'd go on to great fame but not as a bodybuilder.

Re: Guess the Famous Person - 08/01/12 02:35 AM
Tony Curtis?
Posted By: SC
Re: Guess the Famous Person - 08/01/12 02:37 AM
That's a good guess, but wrong. From the same time era, though.
I didn't think I knew any body builders but then off the top of my head I remembered Arnold (but I KNOW it's not him) and I think Lou Ferrigno (Incredible Hulk). But I think they'd both be too young for that picture in 1950.
TIS
Posted By: SC
Re: Guess the Famous Person - 08/01/12 02:42 AM
Right; I know Ferrigno was born the same year as me (1951, also from Brooklyn) and Arnie was sometime in the mid '40s (I think).
Look at the face.... it hasn't changed all that much.

Re: Guess the Famous Person - 08/01/12 02:53 AM
That's a good guess, but wrong. From the same time era, though.
Thanks SC but I thought I had that one.
Hmmm I am stumped.
Not Johnny Weismuller? He was an olympic swimmer I think, not a body builder. Again, the face does look kind of familiar.
Would it be cheating for you to post another picture of the same guy?

Is this man still alive?

Would it be cheating for you to post another picture of the same guy?
Yeah.
Hint: he bonded with a lot of fans in some of his roles. Also, do some math.... this picture was taken about 1950. He looks to be about 20 years old there, so that would make him about 80 years old now. He's still alive.

For now I'm stumped. But tomorrow's another day.

Yep - it's Sir Sean Connery.

What??
And here he is today:
Yep - it's Sir Sean Connery.
Signor V.
Are you freekin' kidding me???
No!!!! I never thought of Connery as a body builder.
Ok, I have to honestly say he would not have even entered my mind.
SV, I had a feeling you or TB would come up with the answer.
TIS
Oh, and SC, "He BONDED with some of his fans?" Great clue. Too bad I didn't get it.
I was thinking tho, "how would he bond with his fans in a movie?" Hmmmmm Ha ha ha

Re: Guess the Famous Person - 08/05/12 12:36 AM
Took me a moment or two, but I recognized it because of the man.
It's a photo from the 1958 play Ulysses in Nighttown, based on a part of the novel Ulysses by James Joyce. The man is Zero Mostel, and the woman is Bea Arthur (from TV's Maude and Golden Girls).
Incidentally, six years later in 1964, Mostel created the role of "Tevye" on Broadway in Fiddler on the Roof, and Bea Arthur was the original "Yente the Matchmaker."

Got this one immediately - but I'm
not going to spoil it for the rest of you.
Odd thing: he would have been about 15 in the photo, and yet he's smoking a
pipe??
He certainly
wasn't known for smoking a pipe.
I'm not going to say anything more.

Fred MacMurray (played the Dad on My Three Sons)
I don't think that's who it is, Mig - MacMurray was born in 1908 and would have only been around seven years old in 1915. This "kid" looks a bit older.

I'm pretty bad at stuff like this ["Aww, that baby looks just like his mother" / "No, it looks just like a baby" lol], but he almost looks like a young version of your avatar... (my first impression was FDR, but I don't think so)

OK, it's probably too dated and too local for this game.
One hint additional: he hosted a weekly tv show in the early '60s.
I don't have a clue but sounds like he was a local celebrity. Is the mask he's holding of any significance as to whom he is?

No. This one was unfair.... it was aimed at those of a specific region and of a specific age. His name is John Zacherely and he played "Zacherle" a ghoulish host of a tv show aimed at kids. The picture above is of him without makeup. This is as he appeared on the show:

Re: Guess the Famous Person - 08/11/12 04:27 PM
I recognized him immediately. But SC is right - I'm not sure many people outside of the NY/NJ area would know him. (Although he did start out on TV in Philadelphia in the late 1950's before he came to New York.) He also had a long career on FM radio in NY.
The photo was taken a few years ago, but he is alive and well - and will turn 94 in September.
As a matter of fact, Signora V. and I met him at a convention back in 1993. A very nice fellow. I still have an inscribed autographed photo of him hanging on my wall.

I would have never guessed Burt Ward. I hadn't seen him in years, but just a couple months ago he called in to the L.A. radio station saying he'd be in the "Bat Mobile" promoting something. Maybe it was his book then. I am not sure.
Anyway, I don't know about a sex scandal but am curious as to what song Frank Zappa wrote for him? Can't be the Batman theme???

Re: Guess the Famous Person - 08/14/12 06:48 PM
Now that Burt Ward was guessed, I can tell my story. When I was about 4, Burt Ward, dressed as Robin, made an appearance at a local mall. He asked all of the kids to gather around him, and I went near him with my older brothers.
The two things I remember are that (1) he addressed everyone as "Citizen," and (2) I was terrified beyond belief. I was hiding behind my brother, clutching his collar and fighting back tears. It was probably the creepiest thing I'd seen up to that point of my life.
I was reminded of the incident about 10 years ago when the creepy kid, who played in the original CHILDREN OF THE CORN made an appearance at a Halloween festival. He appeared to be in his late 30s, but he wore the same outfit and played the same role as he did in the movie. The kids didn't know what the hell to make of him, but when the performance was over, he still acted in character as he was speaking to some of the workers.

I would, but I don't know how to eliminate an identifying name in a picture's URL from the "Properties" if someone should right-click on it.
I think SC has the answer to this; I sure don't.

1)You can always use a free hosting site (like Tinypic) and transfer your photo to that. That will reassign a new URL address without any identifying names.
2)You could also find a picture without the name of the person in its address.

It's not Frank Gifford - uniform's too old.
It's not Jim Thorpe.
It's not the Gipper.
It's not Knute Rockne.
It's not Y.A. Tittle, Bart Starr or Johnny Unitas.
It probably isn't Rosey Grier.

LaFamiglia - Tribute to the Godfather for only $45 (and up). He even did a Don Corleone
sculpture ($450).

I can just about imagine the feeding frenzy! What a sight it must have been back then: the otherwise proper and dignified Michigan ladies rasslin' like a bunch of Monday Night Raw competitors over the last remaining magazine.
A little memory refreshment here:
Then: Now: Reynolds is 76 now, and has had his ups and downs, both career-wise and health-wise. Besides all the plastic surgery, and dealing with an addiction to painkillers, two years ago he underwent heart surgery - a quintuple bypass.

Giancarlo,
It is Burt Reynolds (believe me, I double checked)
Yes, he & Sally Field were engaged around the "Smokey & The Bandit" time if I'm not mistaken. He was always funny & witty I use to love when he was on the Tonight Show. He & Johnny were funny together. I remember the time he came out dressed in a leather suit if I'm not mistaken and one thing leads to another and he & Johnny spray whipped cream all over. He was GOOD in his day.
Thanks for "refreshing" my memory SV. Gotta say, he DID look good...not that I pay attention to that sort of thing mind you.

You can rest easy, Giancarlo, it is most definitely not Ann-Margret. A friend of mine met her a couple of years back at a nostalgia convention in New Jersey and reported that she is quite petite, still gorgeous, and an extremely nice person to her fans.
Back to the Mystery Guest...
Here are some clues to ponder:
The woman in the picture once co-starred with Gypsy Rose Lee, but she was not a stripper and was never in burlesque.
Though a contemporary of Bardot, she is not French.
She did make some American films, but she is not American.
See if that helps.

Like Chaplin and Laurel, he was not born in the US. And, like them, he found his greatest fame from his work in this country (but he was known internationally). His film career started back in the days of silent movies and lasted nearly fifty years. He also acted on the stage (even Broadway) during his long career. Television, too.
He was even honored on a US postage stamp.

As a matter of fact, our Mystery Guest did make a few gangster films. He was in a very famous gangster film, but this genre was not what he was particularly well-known for.
Interesting trivia: He could be, at times, quite reticent about his private life. During his lifetime, it was not commonly known that he was, in fact, married five times!

It's Boris Karloff - Giancarlo nailed it.
BTW, the Grammy that Karloff received was for the album "An Evening With Boris Karloff and His Friends" which came out (I believe) in 1966.

Well then, I'm gonna invoke the "Twelve Hour Rule" (which I just invented) and post another pic. (But, Giancarlo, we eagerly await your next puzzler!)
Gonna give you all an easier one this time.
Take a look at this famous person:
He is still alive, and is known internationally.
That's all I'm going to say for now - except to say that it is definitely
not Boris Karloff!
Signor V.
OMG! I KNOW this.
I went with my first instinct and then checked for childhood pictures. Woo Woo!!!

Re: Guess the Famous Person - 10/27/12 09:38 PM
Actually, I'm not really all that good. I mean, think of all the photos I
haven't guessed!
Others here are far better than me.
With Serling, I copied the picture, then enlarged the face so I could study it without the other visual elements. That helped. What also helped was that close to twenty years ago I had to make someone up as Rod Serling and it didn't turn out as well as we would have liked, partly owing to the fact that the actor bore absolutely no resemblance whatsoever to Serling (and there was virtually no advance time to prepare the job). So somewhere, deep in the Twilight Zone of my brain, I have Rod Serling's face burned into my memory cells...
Anyway, submitted for your approval, here is out next exhibit in the Night Gallery:
This one may be a bit tough.
Some clues to start things off:
The person in the photograph was six years old when the picture was taken, but gained fame years later. Lots of women wanted to look like her. In her day, she was very,
very big. (And I'm
not talking "plus-sized", so it's
not Kate Smith or Mama Cass!) She is not among the living.
And no, it is
not Boris Karloff.
Signor V.
For no particular reason, AND off the top of my head:
Mae West?
TIS
Posted By: Signor Vitelli
Re: Guess the Famous Person - 10/27/12 10:11 PM
A good guess, but it's not Mae West. Right time period, though: Hollywood's Golden Age.
Edit: I have to be away from the computer for a few hours, so I thought I'd throw in a few more hints:
Her screen name was not the name she was born with.
She was married three times, but at the time of her death she was single. She had no children.
She acted opposite some of Hollywood's biggest leading men, playing comedy or drama.
She, herself, has been depicted in several movies.

Just wanted to add what a great actor John Cazale was. A real shame we lost him at such a young age.
The Godfather (One and Two) , The Conversation, Dog Day Afternoon and the Deer Hunter. Not one bad movie.
HBO had a really good documentary on Cazale called : "I Knew It Was You: Rediscovering John Cazale"
If you've never seen it i highly recommend checking it out.
I agree with you. Cazale was good in every film he did. A real shame that we lost him as he was making a name for himself.
I did see the documentary on him and enjoyed it very much.

Since nobody has posted anything, I'll leap into the breach.
And now for something completely different:
No, this one has absolutely
nothing to do with Monty Python.
But, obviously, it is not a photo of a famous person as a young 'un. But it is a famous person. No, it is not a fugitive from Gordon Ramsay's latest TV venture (and this celebrity is
not a chef).
Some clues, because this one just might be a bit difficult:
First off, this is a famous person who, in reality, looks nothing like their image in the photo. The celebrity is still alive, but this is not a recent picture. This photo is from a movie, so we now know that our Mystery Guest is involved in the performing arts.
This person is known internationally. Co-starred in a very famous television series many years ago. Also, hosted a series on Public Television (US) for a while, several years ago. Was once in a James Bond film, too. This person is not American.
Now, try and figure out who she is.

I admit I'm kind of baffled (some would say it's the story of my life)
Before I read your post that it was a female, and only saw the picture, for some reason I thought Bob Dylan. LOL
I'm not a huge Bond fan but thought perhaps Ursala Andress (wasn't she a Bond girl?) and she's foreign BUT never was in a tv show. That scary move, can't be with Lon Chaney? Still, I'm lost at this point.

Well, I'll throw in a few more clues (before I throw in the towel!).
Yes, the woman in the photo was a Bond Girl - but it's not Ursula Andress. Our Mystery Guest is British. (And, BTW, she did not appear opposite Sean Connery.)
The film the photo is from was made in the 1970's. But, she was also seen looking like herself in the movie. The film was not part of a series of any kind - it was a stand-alone entry with no sequels, prequels or anything like that.
The film was made in England, and had an all-star cast.
Gee - I'm running out of clues!

Re: Guess the Famous Person - 10/30/12 03:33 AM
Awwww! And you were so close, Cam!
Well, let me explain:
Yes, she was a Bond Girl, and no, she did not appear opposite Sean Connery. However, she
did appear in the very next film made after Connery quit the role -
On Her Majesty's Secret Service, opposite George Lazenby.
On TV, she played Emma Peel opposite Patrick Macnee in
The Avengers.
In the US, she hosted the PBS
Mystery series.
In the 1973 film
Theatre of Blood, she played opposite Vincent Price as his daughter, Edwina Lionheart - that's where the photo came from.

It's not just one site - it's many. I use Google a lot. Many times I'll search Google Images for the type of smiley I want. For example, I searched for "Groucho smiley" and chose the particular one I wanted to use. I copy the URL for the individual website the smiley is on, then enter the information when I add the image to my post.
For general smiley websites, search Google for "smileys" and you'll get a whole bunch to choose from. Here are two sites I like:
PlanetSmilies FreeSmileyFaceWhen I select a smiley from websites like these, I right-click on the smiley I want to use, then click "properties" on the pop-up screen. This will then show me the smiley's URL and I add this as the image info in my post.

On a Actors Studio interview with James Lipton, Sheen said that he's been arrested 64 times. All of them or at least most of the arrests were for protesting one thing or the other. And that interview i believe was done in 2002 so he probably has upped that arrest number since then.

You tiptoed through the clue list and to the right answer, giancarlo. Tiny Tim was born Herbert Khaury, and died while performing "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" in Minnesota.
I also own a couple of his CDs, including his Christmas album. He has the most peculiar version of "Silent Night," in which he breaks into a soliloquy in the middle of the song. Against the musical background he condemns evil and sinful people, specifying "men fornicating with young children."

I was bummed out when people started cheating. The fun of the game was knowing or trying to guess who the famous person was. Otherwise what's the point in even playing.
I agree I just started getting into the game and thought it was fun but when people started cheating and then other posters relayed the methods of cheating and wudda ya know it ain't fun no more like the game became "Who can cheat the quickest"
Only a suggestion if it appeals to everyone. My brother/sister and I use to, (and every now & then still do) play a game we simply call "Person." One person has someone in mind and the others ask yes or no questions until someone guesses. You can ask anything that can be answered yes or no. I'm thinking for space purposes (if it matters) maybe we can allow one person to post up to three questions in the same post (or not? I don't know, Maybe with so many playing it'll go quickly).
It could go on because there are so many fields of celebrity to cover BUT then again, there would be more than two/three people playing and it could go fast, so don't know if maybe an initial hint might be necessary.
Anyway, just an idea. I'm open to whatever everyone wants.
