He is a peculiar personage. He is the only enemigue that Michael has not killed, and so, Winegardner has excuse to do another book

My honest opinion is that I think the Geraci character was interesting, but he was ruined by the fact that Winegardner a) made Geraci in (supposedly) his own image and b) made him out to be Michael's equal, which we all know is complete BS. The character himself wasn't THAT bad but was taken way too far. Again, just my opinion.

I think Nick Geraci is based on Vincent "The Chin" Gigante, both of them were former boxers

Not a big fan. Wasn't horrible though. Not as bad as the book itself.

****SPOILER ALERT***

Credulity became an over-the-top taffy pull for me when he faked his own plane crash.

I do agree it was annoying that Geraci was modeled after Winegardner and an ode to Winegardner's hometown -- the cesspool that is Cleveland.

I am sure that there were Cleveland connections back in the old days, but did we really need to spend so much time on it in a Godfather book? The Godfather is about NYC and Sicily. Did they even go to Sicily in that book?

Also, Geraci, as well as the entire book -- would have been a lot more enjoyable and easier to understand if Winegardner would have simplified his writing style. Many times it was too vague and confusing.

I hated Geraci, I hated the book too, but I hated Geraci more; he was so neutral, plane and sooooo much of a cugine; you know, just a stupid cafone .... That's why I am not surprised that Winegardener shaped him after him!

Cleveland was hugely mobbed up back in the day, and still has some of that reputation - but with the decline of its manufacturing there are fewer dollars to chase.

Very strongly allied with Detroit and the Outfit

"GF Returns" and "GF's Revenge" is a two-part novel dealing primarily with the life and times of Nick Gerace, with members of the Corleone family playing occasional cameo roles.

Hi,

Just registered today. Have been reading the "Revenge" book and am wondering if Geraci was based somehow on Valachi, where "Fausto's Bargain" could be a mirror of "The Valachi Papers" by Peter Maas.

Thanks

Hi Glimmer, welcome to the boards.
"The Valachi Papers" did come out at approximately the same time as the events of GF's Revenge, but Mark Winegardner's rationale for any of his characters, is beyond my comprehension.
Your guess is as good as mine.

I only read the first chapter of The Godfather Returns but I have to say I was quickly put off by Geraci. Mainly because the type of character he was fit the profile of a Gary Stu/Mary Sue. You see these a lot in books based on popular movies like Star Wars and Star Trek. Basically, he's the guy who's just as powerful and cool as the main character and he's just as important. His description of the first book made him seem like he was this absolutely vital part of Michael's organization that he couldn't live with out. I just found that very off-putting and Stuish.

Oh man I can't stand that Geraci is he supposed to be a god or something? seriously Winegardner butchered the series with that guy.

The character sucks. The books suck. The author should do the honorable thing and kill himself in one of the larger chain bookstores.

While the book wasn't my fav, t didn't hate Geraci. He got buttfucked by Michael. Set him up in that plane to die, then set up again to take the fall with Cuba. He had every right to a vendetta against Michael. In theory, bosses are supposed to look out for their Caporegimes and Soldiers.
