why is fredo gay?

why is fredo gay? - 08/17/05 04:19 PM

this seems way too far fetched, puzo would never have allowed for such an idea, i dont know what the heck mark was thinking when writing something like thaht

ya fredo was dumb and everything, but it is very out of sort for a corleone to be gay, even fredo

Re: why is fredo gay? - 08/17/05 05:52 PM

Throughout the entire novel (if that's what you wana call it), Fredo was a total playboy. Then Winegardner whips out "Fredo's gay" which totally contradicts anything stated in the past. Fredo was weak, but he definitely wasn't gay. Nor was any other Corleone.

Re: why is fredo gay? - 08/17/05 07:01 PM

This subplot seemed totally gratuitous and nothing more than a crass attempt to (ahem) inject (cough) a current issue into the story. Based on Puzo's novel, Freddie was banging cocktail waitresses two at a time, so I guess that makes him bisexual. Then again if you look at how flamboyantly he dressed in the movie version maybe he was a little on the swishy side.

Re: why is fredo gay? - 08/17/05 08:26 PM

Winegardner or whatever is gay name is completly disgraced himself and he knows it ...The Godfather was a masterpiece, a classic of our time..Puzo was a genius and Wine-gay was definitly not.
He took the idea of the Godfather returns and he put in ideas that are more modern and people could relate with them today which is totally inappropriate for The Godfather.....being gay back in the 50's was not unheard of but it was definitly kept on the DL, so for Fredo to be gay would be a very slim possibilty, especially after bangin cocktail waitresess two at a time...I don't think anyone in the Corleone family or any of their associates weree gay....
We all need to forget this Stank Turd Winegardner left for the public and flush it into oblivion where it belongs

Unfortunately, the "Sonny is Gay" thread has been deleted for server space. It was quite "informative."

There was a Sonny is gay thread? What about Carlo and that Pink jumpsuit he was wearing when Sonny beat him up? What about the clearly metrosexual Clemenza and his cooking lessons? What about Woltz with his frilly sculpture garden and his silk pajamas? What about Eli Wallach and all those hand gestures? What about that kiss between Michael and Fredo? And face it, Kay had a thing for Connie.
Maybe they were all gay. Maybe the next installation will be the GayFather.

Then there is this whole ritualistic thing with everyone having titles which mimic the Roman Empire....the ritual of kissing the don's hand. And those friggin bakers...the first one carrying on about the cake with the angels on it, and Enzo with that huge cake with the Catholic thing on it...How gay IS this organization ... So gay that during poor Anthony's firct communion party they have a couple onstage doing ballroom dancing to some kind of show tunes...
so gay that they get a boys choir to serenade the Corleone family!!!!! And what about this fixation with sausages?? What is THAT all about? And how do they set the attempted assassination of Michael? I'll tell you.. Michael notices there is something amiss with the WINDOW TREATMENT! As for the tenor, Anthony Corleone... well I really don't need to go there except to say I didn't see his girlfriend did you?

And what about that betrayal of the bodyguard? Could he have been having a hissy fit because Michael married Apollonia and breaking up the all guy trio trapsing around Sicily?

Re: why is fredo gay? - 08/19/05 06:39 PM

And Roth seems a little light in the loafers with all his schmaltzy sentimentality about ..the trucks, they belonged to your father... and his posing with an open pajama shirt in front of Michael. And all of Fredo's gand seemed to be really turned on by that Superman show. Man, this just goes on and on.

Re: why is fredo gay? - 08/19/05 07:49 PM

hahahaha Thats right every relationship in the Godfather movies has been messed up
Michael and Kay really couldn't stand each other
Connie and Carlo were always fighting and Connie always getting beat up.
Sonny and Lucy- She wasn't good looking and it was an affair
Sonny and his wife seemed to hardley even talk
Fredo and his wife- she was a slut bag that treated him like shit
Michael and Appolonia- she gets whacked
Vincent and Mary-INCEST
In the book Johnny and his wife were divorced, and they movie star he left her for was a HUGE skank and slept with all of holywood
I believe the only normal relaitonship was Vito and
Mama.....Tom and his wife seemed to have a good one

Do you guys think Puzo did this on purpose, maybe to show that the life they chooose was a hard one for loving relationships, and FFC emphasised them in the Movie...

Fredo was a switch hitter no doubt about it.Clemenza - total homo.As soon as the war starts he arranges a slumber party with his thug boyfriends, mocks Michael for calling his girlfriend while he cooks.Think about the Don. He befriends a young street urchin,Tom.Instead of some hulking sociopath he picks a young fella to be his bodyguard.Always at his side I'm sure.Mo Green, how did he get that name?

Re: why is fredo gay? - 10/07/05 10:55 PM

I think the reason Fredo was shocked at the New Year's Eve Party in Havana was because he found out about his brother's bi-sexuality. He even called Fredo a "heartbraker."

Fredo turned gay because a young Al Pacino kissed him on the lips

Re: why is fredo gay? - 10/11/05 02:01 AM

where do i start ? fredo could have been gay or just weak. a reason for the don to pass him over for mike. as far as the " kiss " in havana - its called the italian kiss of death. mike said fredo broke his heart because fredo both lied to him and set him up to be killed. clemenza was just being a " good italian " and enjoying cooking, he was also teasing mike about his conversation w/ kay in front of all those buttonmen. for anthony's communion party, the couple is man and woman and there is a crowd of men and woman. michael did not notice a window treatment, he noticed that the normally closed curtains - for reasons of safety, privacy and security were opened by someone. for the betrayal of the bodyguard in italy - it was because there was a price on mike's head and appolonia got blown up by mistake.

Only just started reading the book (I know, I know it's been out a year already - but I had final exams etc) wasn't expecting much - but thought I had to read it anyways, and I was very very disappointed when I came to that bit. You can't make Fredo gay. Fredo wasn't gay, and he wasn't even that 'weak' in the book just in the movie.

correct fredo was noly weak in the movie fredo killed by mikey was never in the book i dont thik he even betrayed his family in the book that i have already read but if he said fredo was gay that dude is gay himself puzo would never want that probably and i would never read that book i may but i would not lie kthat statment he is a dumass for putting that fredo being weak was only in the movie but also he is straight because they had problems with him banging cotail waitresse

The debate goes on and on about Fredo's sexuality but one thing we can all agree on is that Fredo was smaht - at least thats what he told Michael in the boathouse. wink

Re: why is fredo gay? - 05/12/09 11:51 PM

Fredo is a fictional character and, thus, one can imbue him with just about any characteristic one wants. However, such characteristics should be expected to have some reasonable relationship with what the author has stated about the character. I find nothing in what Puzo or FFC wrote or represented to support any contention that Fredo was gay. On the other hand, Puzo does write about Vito's concern that Michael was gay.
Posted By: The Hollywood Finochio

Re: why is fredo gay? - 05/20/09 12:20 AM

These books are NOT canon to the series. Puzo was not alive to give his permission for this outrage.

The books are merely asides, witterings from a fanboy whose managed to get published thoughts which some of us merely talked about on one these forums...

Complete trash. Fredo only had eyes for the pussy.

Not really, Mark.

It was never a debate prior to this asshole Winegardner writing these books. Fredo was not gay. Period.

Not that there's anything wrong with it.

Re: why is fredo gay? - 10/27/11 09:53 AM

Probably because he loves cock. Isn't that what most gay dudes are about? Cock?

Having said that, Fredo is not gay. Winegardner's Fredo, on the other hand, is totally gay. In fact, the whole series of books by Winegardner are gay.

Its like, how dare he?

But yeah, not that there's anything wrong with that. grin

The gay part I mean. Homo's are champ's. Winegardner, on the other hand, is a jerk. Really, Winegardner? Really? You're gonna make a Corleone gay? I mean, he's perceived as weak, and the only thing you could think of was "its because he must be gay"? Proud day for champion homo's. You're an asshole, Winegardner. Why dont you just marry Nick Geraci?

I wish Id never read that damn book. Its like, I had to keep reading just so I could keep putting it down and going "Wow this book really sucks"

Re: why is fredo gay? - 01/01/12 08:46 AM

It's interesting reading the objections to the 'gay Fredo' subplot - one side seems offended that a Corleone would be homosexual at all (i.e. offended about homosexuality itself), the other side objects to the predictable gay = weak connotation. Then, of course, most here hate the Winegardner books anyway.

Personally, I thought it was dealt with quite well, and worked somewhat - Fredo truly hates this part of himself, as anyone with his background would. It's not a politically correct approach, it's a realistic one given the context. He's a bit of a trainwreck as a Corleone in the films, you could argue that his weakness stems not from being gay, but from self-loathing and fear (resulting from being a gay man in this particular environment). Take a look at what happened to Vito in the Sopranos - can you imagine how a fanook would have been treated fifty years earlier?

That said, the subplot did seem somewhat gratuitous, an attempt to place something of a modern spin on the story which wasn't necessary at all, and wasn't ever really suggested by anything in either the book or films. Deanna Dunn accusing Fredo of 'not being a real man' is about all there was, and I don't think that was ever really the intention of the line anyway (although it fits). Crap in bed or impotent, maybe - gay, probably not.
(Make what you will of his particular choice of alcoholic beverage. A banana daiquiri just sounds disgusting more than anything else)

There was enough drama in the character of Fredo as it was - we knew he was doomed, he was a complete fuckup, no need to screw him up even more. The vague implication of his having been molested by a priest was more of a red herring than anything else, and not one that was exactly credible. However twisted and perverted some of these nonce priests are, can you imagine one daring to put the moves on the teenage son of a mob boss?

I always had the impression that Tony was gay, remember when Kay was telling Michael she said something about "your son...." Michael didn't want to hear it and he slapped the shit out of her so hard he fell forward... I thought she was trying to tell him he was a funyook, and be later became an opera singer who was interested in women, just liked to hang around the gay men's choir

Sonny gay? Even Fredo--gay???

Comic Andy Milonakis sums up calling everything gay in his 2003 video that went viral after Jimmy Kimmel played it on his show.
If this came out now instead of 2003 Kimmel would condemn it instead of praise it. Have a laugh.
