I think that Winegardner created too many new characters. I would have liked to see characters like Pentangelli, Roth, Geary and the Rosato Brothers featured.
However, it is pretty clear that Winegardner was following in the Puzo's novel GF and not taking into account GF II (with the exception of Fredo's death).

Don't worry, you aren't missing anything. This is one of the worst books I've ever read.
Figures it was the one I was most looking forward to read.
