NBA 2019-2020 - 10/16/19 07:41 PM

I don't see a current NBA thread so let's make one. What's everyone's take on the current NBA/China situation? Personally, I find it hypocritical as the NBA, as well as the players, pride themselves as being at the forefront of social justice issues. However, when it comes to China and losing all of those sweet sweet Chinese dollars, now everyone's afraid to speak out against it. I agree that Daryl Morey had the right to express his own personal beliefs with his tweet but like most, I'm sure nobody expected this kind of backlash. Again, I just find it hypocritical that they're bowing down to the Chinese government strictly because of economic reasons. Faces of the league (Curry and LeBron) are even backpedaling saying they aren't that "educated on the issue" so they won't comment on it (although LeBron did just that yesterday). Plus the NBA allowed the Chinese government to silence the players after their games in China as a CNN reporter wasn't allowed to get a question answered by Westbrook and Harden and then after the Lakers/Nets game, the media wasn't allowed access to players at all. Like everything else in this world, cash is king!

I agree 100%. All of these athletes with a social conscious have every right to say what they want. But when you have people speak out about how bad our government is and then say they do not know enough about a subject to speak on it just shows how full of s*&^ they are. What person in the United States with a fifth grade education does not know that the Chinese government is one of the biggest human rights violators on the planet. It is like our embargo with Cuba. Cuba has a population of about 11 million people while China has over 1 billion. The only reason we do not punish China is because of the size of the market.

Exactly! Be consistent in your stance. If you're going to speak up for one injustice, speak up for all. Now LeBron's giving the "we're not politicians" lines and without trying to bring politics into this thread, LeBron's been pretty critical of Trump and even threw support to Hillary during her campaign. Which I understand, is completely his prerogative. Just don't say you're such an outspoken leader but when it comes to China, now you're not a politician. So if you're unwilling to speak on that issue, why should anyone listen to you in the future on other issues?
