Euro 2012 thread - 05/16/12 12:30 PM

Well I guess there are a few footie fans on here so started a thread on it.
English squad just announced, I read it, rubbed my eyes, surely not! Well yes it's true Stuart Downing, Gareth Barry, Andy Carroll, 3 of the most overrated English players of all time are in. Oh and the usual big comp flops and losers are also in, Gerrard, lampard etc. Not confident...
Posted By: Yogi Barrabbas

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 05/16/12 01:52 PM

The squad is a disgrace Nicky, but like we said in the other thread, we weren't expecting owt else eh??

Nice to see Oxlade-Chamberlain in but how much of a go will he get??

Only 4 strikers in the squad and Rooney missing for the first 2 games????

Hodgson on the TV saying he took Carroll (Liverpool record,9 goals in 50 games) because Dalglish said hewas a great player...well he f**king would say that would he not??
Posted By: NickyScarfo

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 05/16/12 01:55 PM

The one that is getting me is Downing seriously!!! I really thought that after the 2010 WC, the public had called for real change, and we would get rid of almost everyone involved in the last 5-6 years. What has Gerrard done to deserve being in the squad? Finishing 8th with Liverpool?! I can't stand seeing Lampard and him in that midfield!
Yeah I can't believe he took Carroll, Sturridge has been more deserving.
Posted By: Yogi Barrabbas

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 05/16/12 02:00 PM

Gerrard is shot, injury prone and poor for Liverpool in a crap season for them. Maybe King Kenny told Hodgson to take him as well and Downing????? Words fail me mate, they really do.......

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 05/16/12 02:02 PM

Great idea, this thread. Gonna be a busy month next June! It's a strange thing, with the English national team. You guys have one of the two strongest league's in the world, but in the Euro and World cup it never amounts to nothing. To many foreign players in the Premier League, I guess.

There are three teams that can win this, and that's Spain, Germany or Holland. I hate the Germans, but I also couldn't stand to see Spain win again. So, there's really just one option wink.

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 05/16/12 02:07 PM

Hodgson getting rattled because he is getting quizzed over Rio Ferdinand not being in the squad. That is all a farce as well. Rio out and Terry in but it's just a football desicion...which is a load of old tosh!!!!!!

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 05/16/12 02:10 PM

I'm only 24, but Iv'e had enough heart ache watching England to last a life time lol. I think your right Chopper those 3 teams are the one's to back.

Its gonna be a good tournament....for all me doom and glooming about England, come that first game against the Frogs i will be in the boozer giving it large. Good atmosphere in the pubs for England games smile
Posted By: Chopper2012

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 05/16/12 02:20 PM

Strange though, since your country spawned the game! The problem is that the big English clubs don't invest in their own youth. That's the one thing we have going for our self over here. But, our club teams will never, ever win the Champions League again...

I understand your frustration but who do you wanna play at midfield other than Gerrard and Lampard?

now Yogi at least that is a reason for taking Carroll. his playing couldn't be the one.

Really hope so mate! Two years ago we were so close to being World Champion! It still hurts. I can still see Robben missing the biggest moment of his career by shooting the ball against Casillas foot crazy.

Some good news, Gareth Barry is out for the whole Euro, good one of the most overrated England Players of all time. Most of the time I don't even realize he's on the pitch.

Lampard out as well...to be replaced by Jordan Henderson??? How many of Liverpool's crappy "big name" buys are we going to take???

Watched the game against Belgium last night......Welbeck scored a great goal and we defended well...and that's about it!!

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 06/05/12 10:50 AM

The thing is, I was really looking forward to watching the Euro's but Iv'e realized how Hodgson is going to play this, very defensive with slow ball out of midfield and try to nick games 1-0, why should we be surprised though, England have been so dull to watch since 1996. Can't we for once just give it a go and play with some flair?

We have to beat Germany now, next Wednesday. No easy task.

Last night was unbelievable, we missed so many, many changes. I don't know what's going on, but van Persie and Robben need to get sharp, and fast.
Posted By: DE NIRO

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 06/10/12 03:31 PM

I think Holland had something like 27 shots at goal Van Persie is not the same player as he is for Arsenal..
Posted By: Chopper2012

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 06/10/12 03:37 PM

I wish Robin was the same player that he is with Arsenal.

But the truth is, at the World Cup two years ago he played every game, only to make just one goal, in the one match that didn't matter. Essentially we reached the finale with ten players.

Crazy as it is, with him being the best striker in the Premier League, he should start the next match on the bench, with Huntelaar taking his place.

I thought Italy should have won the game having had the better chances. Spain are so frustrating to watch as they try to walk the ball in all the time,, no plan B
Posted By: Chopper2012

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 06/10/12 06:12 PM

Italy surprised me, with their 3-5-2 system, they deserved a win. One World Cup Final player loses, the other draws, funny how things go.

So chuffed Italy did really well! Especially losing to USA and Russia!

hahaha of course. One thing I will say about England and our fans is have you noticed yogi that the hooligan stuff at England games seems to have ended? Rememeber Euro 2000? Disgraceful scenes, its why we never win world cup bids, but that seems to have all stopped touch wood.

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 06/11/12 08:02 AM

My run down so far!

Poland looked good first half with some young players and big home support. Greece came back strong and showed spirit!!

Russia looked awesome but i have to say their defence would have problems against better sides. Czech Rep actually played well and are not out of it yet!

Holland blew a great chance, play Germany next and suddenly look vulnerable(sorry Chopper) Denmark stuck in there but surely are no great shakes!

Germany v Portugal was a stinker. Germany will win the tournament playing like that and Portugal only started playing when it was too late!

Spain v Italy was a good match, 2 good sides pretty evenly matched. Ireland played with spirit in front of their great support and Croatia looked good, possible tournament dark horses!

England to win 5-0 later and Sweden Ukraine to play out a bore draw shocker smile

You're right Yogi, we should've won that game. Now, it could all be over for us come Wednesday! I wish you guys good luck against the French. Strange enough, England is a bit of the underdog today, but that could work in your favor!

Well the Russians chinned some stewards the other night and the Croatians were scrapping with the police last night but nothing too bad! If it were England they would be screaming for us to be thrown out. Our hooligan problem does seem to have abated...no more fighting the Tunisians on the beach in Marseille and tearing apart whole city centres like Charleroi back in '98.......

Good result overall, we would take that every time. Its a shame it makes the game dull but we can't really compete with France in flair. It could of been even better, Milner really should of scored that...
Posted By: DE NIRO

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 06/11/12 06:52 PM

I think 1-1 is a decent start against a strong France team on a long unbeaten streak.. I think if the game lasted 15 minutes longer France would have scored again. there forward line was class on the ball, but i think better teams might catch their defence out..

Overall a good start for England, bring on Sweden..
Posted By: Yogi Barrabbas

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 06/12/12 08:16 AM

Fairly impressed with England. Strong defence and good spirit! France looked ok but nothing special!!

I saw Ireland was beaten by Croatia, Yogi, and being of proud Irish descent, I always have a soft spot in my heart for them. I would think both countries are long shots, but was this result expected.

I was reading where the Church was holding a major international conference of some kind in Dublin, and all of the foreign prelates attending felt especially honored when they saw the streets filled with Irish flags and enthusiasm upon their arrival. They eventually learned that the excitement was for the match against Croatia.

Russia have been docked 6 points (to come into effect for 2016 qualifying) due to poor crowd behaviour. Russian fans have long had a reputation for trouble, of course FIFA reward this by giving them the hosting rights for the world cup 2018. Also during this Euro there has been incidents of racist chantings such as towards Mario Balloteli and towards the Dutch while they were warming up. FIFA are a corrupt organization who don't care about countries being suitable to host. Its disgraceful that England, the home of football hasn't apparently been fit to host a World Cup since 1966.

Sadly I have to agree. They played better.....but that doesn't mean I have to like it wink.

Strangely enough we still have a small change, if the Germans beat Denmark, and we beat Portugal with big numbers.....but I don't see that happening.

The Germans were not great, the Dutch team was just very bad, notably in the first half. The Germans even acted suprised they could score so easily. They did what had to be done. The Dutch team failed miserably. This seems to be their worst tournament in like ever. I can't remember the last time the Dutch didn't make it out of the group phase.

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 06/17/12 05:05 PM

The Russian game surprised me, thought I had the Czechs beating Poland. Greece plays ugly, but they play it consistently. France looks strong to me, I think they will continue to get better, plus they are looking for some redemption after that cluster in South Africa a few years ago. France and Germany have looked the best to me, then you have some teams like Italy and Spain not far behind them.

Croatia vs Spain
Ireland vs Italy

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 06/19/12 01:28 PM

England would have a good change against Spain, they are not the same team they were two years ago. Seems like France and England will go through tonight?

As for my own team....too many ego's who really didn't care that a whole country was watching them, no team spirit, and a coach that didn't know what he wanted.

The result: zero points clap .
Posted By: Yogi Barrabbas

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 06/19/12 01:41 PM

Chopper, whats the fall out like over there then with the fans and the media and such?? Angry of course but are they wanting rid of the manager?? It was only 2 years ago he took you to a World Cup Final??

Or are they angry with the palyers?
Posted By: Chopper2012

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 06/19/12 02:04 PM

The manager still has a lot of respect over here Yogi, but with zero points it's probably over for him.

The people are mostly angry with the players, and the stories of the last weeks are now leaking to the media. Seems like there wasn't really a team, but a lot of fights and a lot of little ego's who didn't want to work together.

I've posted the picture before in this thread of van Persie making a phone call just seconds after we lost our first game, while still standing on the field. For me, that says it all.

Well done to England so far you have proved me wrong, for once we seem to be playing with heart and passion and I think that is down to Hogson who I have a lot of time for (did you know this guy speaks fluent Swedish?!). Gerrard has been immense so far as has Terry and Glen Johnson. One minor issue, I don't think Milner is up to it, lets drop him and get some pace on the flank.
The Italy game will be incredibly tight and nervy, one goal could win it for someone, for the love of god please no penalty shoot-out!

Posted By: GerryLang

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 06/22/12 10:27 PM

The Portugal/Cech game was a joke. The Czech players looked like they were running in quick sand, they could have played the match for two days and I don't think they would have scored. That last corner they had was abysmal. I was pulling for Greece today, and thought they had some hope when they tied it up, but Germany was too skilled.

I watched the last ten minutes of extra time, and then saw England go up 2-1 in the shoot out. When I got back to the TV, I saw Italy celebrating. It was exciting, but it appeared to my untrained eye that in extra time Italy kept putting the pressure on England and England couldn't quite get an opportunity to score at all. Was that indicative of the entire match?
Posted By: mr. soprano

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 06/25/12 02:55 AM

I also only saw the last ten minutes of extra time, and the shoot outs. Italy was indeed the better team. The real question is: Why does England always seem to buckle during the shoot outs? I can think of two occassions in the last ten years where they've lost to Portugal in shoot outs during Euro/World cups. With all their talents over the years, you'd think they'd be better equipped.

hell yes. both England and France were a joke in this tournament and England looks like it's about to go into a rough time. which young english player is going to be the one to lead their next generation? Premier League is so good, there's no space to develop young, struggling players in english teams. that has happened with Spain and Italy too. also you can't have Andy Carroll as one of your primary offensive weapons and expect to get away with it.

now, France was just lame. Benzema was always a mile away from the opponent's goal and their offensive line just exchanged passes in front of the area without ever actually trying to score - that when they faced inferior teams; yesterday they just watched Spain play.

on the good side, fuckin' Ronaldo was a monster in the q/f and Germany is the best international team I have seen in years.

won't be an easy match, but I hope don't end up on penalties. just to make us laugh, a friend of mine on Facebook, after the victory against Germany, wrote this phrase:
According to the Reuters that reports the news of a successful assault on a German fortress in Polish territory by Italian troops. In the assault distinguished itself for the ardor and ability of war, the askari Mario Balotelli!

This was my reply:

Intelligence sources say that there will be a massive attack, this time in Ukrainian territory, the Spanish hill to the damned hill, on which have broken the brave Portuguese troops. It is expected that the brave Pirlo, Buffon and the askari Balotelli prove once again, their skill and strength warlike

Italy will beat Spain, they're in a winning mood. Plus, if Spain wins millions of people will be asleep at the end of the game.

Well Spain is playing amazing, that second goal was some world class football.

Italy needs a miracle in the second half, but it's not looking good.

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 07/01/12 09:29 PM

They are. Italy's defense is legendary, and Spain goes and scores 4 times like it's nothing.

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 07/01/12 09:36 PM

The past Italian defenses where legendary not this one.. smile.. Pirlo was my player of the tournament, but Spain never gave him time on the ball like other teams did (England).. smile

Re: Euro 2012 thread - 07/02/12 02:04 PM

This is a new italy side they arent a defensive side as they are known to be. They been playing 352 and 433 structures not a defensive structure like 442. Prandelli has change this side to a more passy side. when playing spain its very tiring. when you eventually get the ball your too tired to do something with it. Its pure brilliance by Spain. Doesnt help when your ten men short cause of injury! tongue

Well Spain signed off with their best performance and i felt sorry for Italy, especially after Motta went off and they went down to ten men!!

But congrats to Spain and overall it was a great tournament with no terrible play acting and very few red cards!

Roll on the World Cup cool
