Derek Jeter

I am a big Yankees fan, and wanted to hear what everybody thought about the Jeter talks and him still being a Yankee.

He's an icon. I think the media is trying to make a bigger rift between he and Cashman than need be.

Both sides had their points, and in the end they both realized that Jeter is worth a whole lot more to the Yankess than to any other team, for his leadership alone. He wasn't going to garner much interest from a young team trying to rebuild, but to the Yankees he's invaluable, for his leadership alone.

He's a class guy and I always liked him, so I'm happy he's going to end his career in New York (unless he decides to ask for 25 million a year when he's 41 ).

I can't stand the Yankees, but I'm glad Jeter resigned with them. He wouldn't look right in any other uniform, and it's nice to see a player these days play an entire career with one team.

This is true there are not many that stay with the same team. However I am a big Yankees fan. What is your team.

That is a true statement in sports today not a whole lot of class guys out there anymore.

2 Problems with the Yanks/Jeter negotiations.

One, Yanks were effectively bidding against themselves. Only they would have paid Jeter as much as they did because of Jeter's fanboy iconic value, since I deeply doubt the Royals or (God forbid) Red Sox would pony up as much dough. Which was why Yanks were trying to penny pinch as much as possible with Jeter, and honestly I don't blame them.

Because in the end, was last season just a blip for Jeter (shit happens) or is this the beginning of his career downside?

Of course Jeter's biggest leverage wasn't necessarily his popularity, long tenure, or even on-field ability. It was his 3,000th hit next year, the icing for a Hall of Fame career. And the fanbase would never forgive Brian Cashman if Jeter walked.

Two, that these negotiations went public. Such bravado, language, and tactics used by Yanks and Jeter's people are quite normal, its just how you play the game. Except they're usually private, and they generally only go public when one side thinks they're getting fucked and they try to sway the media/fanbase to their cause.

But whatever, its over. Jeter stays, Yanks get their 3,000th hit, Jeter gets his Brinks trucks for 3 years, Yanks don't have to dish out for a 4th year. Hell that much cheaper 4th season "player option" I'm sure was a compromise, opening up down the road for a possible later extension.

I do not think they should have went public it made both the Yankees abd Jeter look bad everybody knew there was a negotiantion process.

yeah it did, and obviously Jeter looked pissed off at that very awkward press conference. Can't blame him.

Notice the contrast in the Rivera negotiations. Never went public, Mo got his cash, everybody happy. This might have to do with Rivera (despite his age) still kicking ass and chewing gum last season. There was no doubt, pay him the money.

But its over, and Yanks now got to deal with the Cliff Lee War.

Wasn't he supposed to have gotten married in November? Did he realize the wrath of his #1 Babe would be too surreal and called it off?

I did notice that the alleged wedding date passed with no news. Sigh. Poor Derek. No other woman will stack up. What can I say?

It could be worse you could be a Red Sox fan.

re Jeter: I don't see him leaving the yanks. He's the face of the franchise these years. Leaving the yanks could turn very ugly -- see Lebron James.
