+14 in a Major make the cut?????
I played Wii Golf for the first time yesterday visiting my nephew. It's fun! But it takes some coordination (which I usually lack), but I definitely wanna get a Wii. I shot a +22 in the first 4 holes just trying to figure out the buttons.

You think that's bad. Try some of the other sports. Apparently it's become popular in senior citizen and rehab facilities. I stick to the bowling and I still can't figure out how to make it hook and not hook. In tennis I hit them in the stands. Car racing...a crash every 300 yards.

I also tried bowling (not too hard) and boxing (impossibly random). I got into the golf, but still got confused over the buttons. Funny, though... my mom (who's pushing 80 and plays golf) did better than I did -- and she's never played a video or computer game!

Great score, JL. How often do you play?
Posted By: Just Lou
Re: 2008 Best Ball Challenge (Golf) - 06/20/08 04:28 PM
I usually play about twice a month weather permitting. Last year I was playing at least once a week. I'm going back to my old irons this year. Last year I bought new Taylor Made Irons, and I can hit them well. The best part of my game is driving. I'm a long hitter. Somehow I can hit the ball 275-300 yards on a pretty regular basis. My problem is keeping things straight, and my short game stinks. I consider a good day when I break 90, which isn't too often.

Re: 2008 Best Ball Challenge (Golf) - 06/20/08 05:35 PM
I know the feeling. I hate when I hit two great shots on a hole, only to duff the 3rd shot or 3 putt. I also usually have 1 or 2 holes where I completely meltdown.

Re: 2008 Best Ball Challenge (Golf) - 06/20/08 05:48 PM
Hunter Mahan shot a 63 today
I shot a 62 once!!!
(Then I went on to the back nine).
Seriously, the best round I ever shot on a regulation course was a 77 (on the Yellow course at Bethpage).... and that was with one double bogey!! Those days are long gone; I haven't played in years and I'd be lucky to shoot 110 now.
Two golf holes stand out in my memory and I guess they always will. Allow to me to brag for a bit:
Back in 1974 I went to Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico, and played on it's championship course. There was one LONG par-5 that had a big dogleg left over water. The resort had a standing offer - if you eagled the hole, you'd get your room free for a week. Well, I was hitting the ball well that week, and this one particular day, I was really creaming it. Now, I usually hit a fade and that's how I played this hole on the earlier rounds. This day I thought I'd try to hook it over the water (the carry was at least 270 yards). I locked up my left side and absolutely hit the piss out of the ball... it cleared the water and ran up the fairway (probably totalling 350 yards off the tee). I was faced with a fairly straight second shot of about 225 yards to the pin. I pulled out my trusty 3 wood and put the ball on the middle of the green about 35 feet from the cup.
So here I am, putting for an eagle and a free week at the hotel..... I ended up three putting for a par.
Second "brag": About 15 years ago I visited my parents in Florida and my dad used to play at an "executive" course (probably about 6,000 yards). I was playing regularly then and hitting the ball well. This day, it was very warm, and I was TOTALLY relaxed and loose. We came up to the first par 4 (only about 310 yards) with a slight dogleg right (which favored my fade). I had the honors but told my dad and the two guys we were playing with to hit because the foursome ahead of us was just getting to the green. I waited until the foursome ahead putted out before I approached the tee. The two other guys we were playing with looked at each other with rolling eyes, but when I put the ball pin high on the fringe they stopped rolling their eyes. I putted in for an eagle.
The rest of the day (I think I shot a 71 or 72) these guys looked at me like I was a pro. It was a great feeling and one I'll never forget.

Re: 2008 Best Ball Challenge (Golf) - 06/20/08 05:54 PM

I've been on a course maybe a handful of times, years ago. My highlight was chipping from the sandtrap into the hole. We never really kept score, though, as I was (and still am) a beginner...

Re: 2008 Best Ball Challenge (Golf) - 06/20/08 06:21 PM
I've only had 2 Eagle putts in my entire life, and turned them both into Pars. I've almost gotten a hole-in-1 on a Par 3 several times, but close doesn't count. I had one great hole yesterday. A 427yd Par 4. I nailed my drive 320+ yards right to the 100 yard marker. I made a decent pitch onto the green, to about 25' from the hole, and nailed the putt for a Birdie.

Re: 2008 Best Ball Challenge (Golf) - 06/20/08 06:39 PM
SC, I applaud your almost free week. It's so hard to actually do what you intend when playing golf.
My one big brag is back to back eagles. I was playing on a dog patch, burned out, rock hard course in Pennsylvania. It was the town tournament and my wife's uncle was the mayor. All the nephews and cousins played. It was a beerfest with golf on the side. After about 12 holes I was fairly oiled up. We come to short par 5...maybe 450 yds. I hit a decent drive and it just runs on the dried out fairway. My approach shot goes in a bunker, front of the green. Out of the sand, in the hole, eagle. Next hole, another par 5, going back up the hill. Same thing, good drive and it runs, good approach shot. I'm on a green side hill and I chip it in. Shot a 78 on a par 70 course and didn't win a f'n' thing. Those old Italians and Irishmen didn't want to acknowledge that a Kraut had back to back eagles....but my group knew. Never duplicated, and likely never will.

Hole-in-one's are easy to come close too, but actually getting the ball into the hole is another story. I've hit the flag a couple of times, and gotten the ball within inches a few others.

I've hit the pin once (but the ball bounced off to about 10 feet away) and have never been closer than about three feet. My brother has made three or four holes-in-one.

Re: 2008 Best Ball Challenge (Golf) - 06/20/08 08:39 PM
The elusive ace. I've come within inches 3 times, back when I played better, so now it will be luck. Probably one that will bounce off the Goodyear blimp.
My cousin has two on the same hole. 100 yards, up hill, severly sloped green. You can only see the top quarter of the flagstick. One of the aces he drilled into the hill and it hopped up on the green. Unfortunately on that hole you can't see them go in.

Pretty close for day one. Come on you wannabees!
BTW, I played 9 holes today. First hole, par, second hole, 275 drive, on the green in two, birdie......and the rest is....my usual double, triple, par, bogey, triple......
I played 18 yesterday, and it was ugly. No birdies, a couple of pars, and the rest a bunch of crap. I also lost a 1/2 dozen balls.

That's what happens when you hit the ball long.....long and wrong. Don't feel bad, even Tiger and Phil hit them in the rough. They don't lose balls because they ricochet off the gallery's noggins and they have hundreds of people there to find their balls.

It's only the second time I played this year, so I shouldn't expect much. I also went back to my old irons, and sold my Taylor Made irons that I bought last year. I'm a work in progress right now.

Re: 2008 Best Ball Challenge (Golf) - 06/27/08 07:17 AM
I am reminded of a story ....
It's about Sammy Davis, Jr. playing the championship course at The Concord Hotel (upstate NY). The course was nicknamed "The Monster" and it was a difficult course to play especially if you were a duffer. Now, Sammy Davis may have been a great entertainer but he was a DUFFER on the golf course. Legend has it he played this course once and after losing 3 dozen balls on the front nine, bought another three dozen and promptly lost them on the back nine. How the hell can you lose six dozen balls????
Now, THAT would have been a wonderful place for us to hold a golf outing... a great course with rooms right near it. Unfortunately I think it has closed now.

He must have shot a 200.

Re: 2008 Best Ball Challenge (Golf) - 06/27/08 04:04 PM
Legend has it that he scored 130 on the front nine and didn't keep score on the back nine.
Legend also has it that on a hole there with a big water hazard he lost a dozen balls alone. Supposedly he would keep putting down a new ball and re-hitting the shot (into the lake) and someone asked his caddy, "Why is he only using new balls here"?
The caddy allegedly replied, "He doesn't have any old ones".

Anyway check out the the scores so far this morning?
My foursome is +2 for the day so far, and I'm in the top 85%!
Singh is +10 through 11, and Mickelson is +6 through 7.
....And that's not even that bad! It looks like you could shoot 80 for today and tomorrow, and make the cut.

True!
The conditions look pretty tough (windy and damp). I think I saw that five guys were tied at even for first place.
Judging by the scores on the website, MaryCas' idea of picking all Brits may be paying off.... they're more used to playing in those conditions.

I went with an all international lineup myself. I'm surprised you guys picked
Padraig Harrington. He was listed as 50/50 to play, and said he wasn't sure he could make it through the 1st round if he did. So far his 74 looks pretty good.

I didn't do that much research (about Harrington's health) before picking him. I wanted at least one Irish/English guy on my team.
I kust watched him blow an easy putt on the 18th!
FWIW - Tom Watson shot a 74 too. Not to shabby for an old fart.
