No. That's the one that Bad Daddy was commish and we played "off line".

Boy, I'm getting all misty eyed remembering all the friends that were here and left.

Re: GBB FANTASY SPORTS HOF - 09/04/05 10:52 PM

Sorry, I meant no one else. Of course you care. The only one, apparently. *sniff* But better your pom-poms than the bats & balls I guess...

Re: GBB FANTASY SPORTS HOF - 09/04/05 11:12 PM

I care.

I really didn't see this until now. Though I'm not involved in the fantasy games besides BBC, it's nice to see what kind of reputations the gamers around here have - you did a great job, and this must've been a lot of work.

Would you mind slipping me into the HOF? Or do I actually have to win something, first?

I always thought pom poms and bats and balls went well together.

Since I'm listed apparently winning something isn't a qualifying factor.

I think beings "Imasoldier" never identified themself he should be disqualified and I should be given the title of 2004 Pick-n-roll winner.

Re: GBB FANTASY SPORTS HOF - 09/04/05 11:30 PM

I care. A lot more than everyone else seems to care about the baseball stats I post every week.

Actually, I was thinking of doing the same thing myself, but you beat me to it.

Now we need a way of assigning different values to the more important games vs. those of lesser importance.

I'd suggest:

Tier One: Baseball, Football, Basketball
Tier Two: Other season-long games (Gridiron Challenge, Diamond Daily Overall Points & the Pick 'Em games)
Tier Three: Other games (Golf, Bass Fishing, Horse racing, Diamond Daily monthly winners, etc.), except
Tier Four: "One Day" games, like the NBA and NFL Draft games
Posted By: J Geoff

Re: GBB FANTASY SPORTS HOF - 09/04/05 11:43 PM

Perhaps also some points for runners-up, as well...
Posted By: plawrence

Re: GBB FANTASY SPORTS HOF - 09/04/05 11:53 PM

Yeah, like a 3-2-1 for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd -- at least in the games where there were enough participants that finishing third actually meant something.

Then there's the problem of "split season" games like basketball and basbeall.

Winning each segment is worth something, but so is overall points.

If someone wins one or both segments and overall points we'd essentially be giving them credit twice.

On the other hand, in basbeball this year we have the very real possibility that the overall points winner will not have one either segment.

Re: GBB FANTASY SPORTS HOF - 09/05/05 10:59 AM

Well I cared until I realised I haven't won anything yet.

You've got to list the 2005 games ASAP. Especially the NFL draft game. I finished 3rd in that.

You're handicapped Turi, because you don't follow baseball or basketball.

Yeah, but Overall Standings were never posted, what you see in that last post is standings for the last tourny, and even those are unofficial. And, we only played a few rounds, not a full season... Partagas won the tourny before you. I guess I'll try to compile it and choose a winner...

Re: GBB FANTASY SPORTS HOF - 09/06/05 03:24 PM

Sorry JG - I was just looking at my Uber results page showing me in 1st place. I think how it worked out last year was that it was 4 separate games (the majors only I think). I won 2 of them I think. Partagas won one. MC won one also.
Posted By: J Geoff

Re: GBB FANTASY SPORTS HOF - 09/06/05 07:12 PM

Okay, according to that thread, we played 4 games, but only have final results for 3 of them, but I guess that's not needed.

The results were as such:

1) Masters (April 11 2004)

PG 249
SC 255
JG 257
FS 257
DB 259
MC 259

2) US Open (June 21, 2004)

DB 251
JG 253
MC 253
PG 260
FS 263
SC 272

3) British Open (July 18, 2004)

After 3 rounds:
MC 186
SC 188
JG 190
DB 196

4) PGA Championship (August 19, 2004)

DB 251
JG 252
MC 254

DB won 2 games, PG 1, MC 1. I'll consider PG & MC as co-runners-up I suppose.

Thanks.

Re: GBB FANTASY SPORTS HOF - 09/06/05 07:16 PM

Kudos on all the hard work. It must have been a slow day at the office.

However, please recheck last year's games. There was an NFL Eliminator, like this year's. Everyone was out after week two, except yours truly. APOLOGY, SENATOR, THIS COMMITTEE OWES AN APOLOGY!

Re: GBB FANTASY SPORTS HOF - 09/06/05 07:22 PM

JG, I think you beat BDD in the Championship game. Just a guess, but if I recall correctly, Buffy and Plaw didn't make the playoffs. Bethie and I were trading the #1 and #2 seeds in the end (Bethie ended up #1, I think), but we both lost in the first round of the playoffs. By process of elimination, that leaves BDD as your final opponent.

Bethie?

Okay, thanks! You're right - you won the ESPN one, and Buffy won the Yahoo one. Not sure how since technically the same picks would be made in each game, but, perhaps some people didn't play both games.

This year, only the Yahoo game will count, not the ESPN one (due to age restrictions), so be sure to play the Yahoo version this year!

Is this the football you are thinking of that we played 2 years ago DB? I do remember winning the "regular season". (Which is all that really matters) I believe I was upset by that cross dressing porkchop in the first round.

I think only those w/ months of daily games should be Tier 1. Football just doesn't have enough games played to compare with baseball & basketball.

Re: GBB FANTASY SPORTS HOF - 09/06/05 07:36 PM

You can't penalize football just because it's played only once a week. For many, it is THE fantasy game to play. For overall cultural significance (yes, I'm still talking about fantasy sports ), I would place the Yahoo football in the highest tier. I would even place the March Madness bracket tournament up there as well.

I don't know - what would make the head-to-head game any more special than Gridiron Challenge, Pigskin Pick'm, and the NCAA games? And how can 17 games + postseason compare to almost endless months of daily picks?

I don't know about March Madness where you just set it and forget it... that belongs in the lowest tier I think. :p

No complaints from me that March Madness belongs in the lowest tier. I didn't win it.

As for the Yahoo game, just my opinion but I would place it higher than the other football games because it is considered the standard fantasy football game. It is the game played on all the sites (ESPN, Sportsline, Yahoo, etc). I agree that more effort is required in the daily games in other sports, but I think the game is just as hard to win and requires all the skill and strategy of the other games.

And no, I'm not making these arguments because I won last year. :p
Posted By: plawrence

Re: GBB FANTASY SPORTS HOF - 09/06/05 08:09 PM

I agree with DB. Football is football.

The season is long enough, and even though we don't play games every day, watching the waiver list and free agents requires daily attention.

March Madness and the NBA Playoffs Game (The one we get dizzy from) belong in Tier 3, I think.

Re: GBB FANTASY SPORTS HOF - 09/06/05 11:48 PM

Well, I'll go with majority rule there. It doesn't really matter, and not only because I won it once. :p

I would, however, argue that 44 golf tournaments belongs in Tier 1 as well. It takes just as much skill (none that I have, apparently) to pick quality foursomes for 44 weeks vs 17 weeks of football. I'm sure Lou would agree. :p

What is the point of the tiers anyway

Re: GBB FANTASY SPORTS HOF - 09/07/05 02:45 AM

To assign point values to winning the various games, so we can figure out who the mother of all fantasy players here is.

Obviously, winning the one-day NBA draft game is not worth as much as winning the overall points in baseball for example.

Also, the number of players has to be considered.

Winning a season of baseball against 9 or 10 other people is harder than winning a season of 44 golf tournaments against only three other people.

Re: GBB FANTASY SPORTS HOF - 09/07/05 03:07 AM

oh ok I see now.

I think you have to go more in depth than 3,2,1 points respectively because you have to take into account how many players like you said.

I won fantasy bass fishing, but it was against JG and BE, so somehow points would have to be deducted from me or somehow adjusted to say that I only beat 2 people.

Look at the horse racing, with only 3 people playing then everyone would be guaranteed a point.

(yeah I just sorta said what you said lol)

Here is my idea: what if we set a limit to the number of "payouts" say 6.

So 1st-6,2nd-5 etc.. and then multiplied that number times the number of players playing (would have to figure in tier numbers somehow as well) but so that if I win horse racing I'd get 18points and if you win Baseball you'd get 60.

I think each participant should write a 500 word essay on the merits of their plan for determining the most fantastical fanatasy fanatic. Then the independent firm of Pryce Waterbed can determine the winner. :p

Hey JG - I'm going to start updating the archives. For ease of update, I'm starting to place the "Fantasy" markers on those games that haven't been marked yet. I'm not done yet though. So far, I've marked fantasy threads from posts dated 1/1/06 and forward.

Re: GBB FANTASY SPORTS HOF - 11/15/07 04:35 PM

It's funny - to place these markers, I had to open the threads. More often than not, the first poster after the "Sign up for this game here" post was Plaw. He was always looking for ways to show off his fantasy prowess.

Re: GBB FANTASY SPORTS HOF - 11/15/07 06:15 PM

Good idea...but there should be a Hall of Fame and then something that has all these records.

The Hall of Fame would be more about the people and their accomplishments. Games won, placed, etc.

Elect one BBer per year to make it exclusive.

for example:

[b]Longneck[b]
112-5 cumulative record in Fantasy Football
5 Fantasy Football Championships
ESPN Eliminator Challenge Champion: 2008-2012
Yahoo Survival Football Champion: 2008-2011
Gridiron Challenge Champion 2009

and so on

That would be hard though, maybe even impossible for past stats, but future ones can be saved...

Update: I've "fantasy" marked all fantasy sports threads from posts dated 1/1/05 (subject to accidental overlooking). This should enable us to update easily for 2005 games and on.

Hey JG,
Question for you... As I was setting up the list of past champions in the fantasy football thread, I was wondering how you classified winter games (e.g. football and basketball)? Would you classify a game by "Year started" or "Year completed"?

I'd say year started - I believe that's how I did the first couple years...
