ESPN Pigskin Pick'Em Football Game - 08/31/04 12:52 PM

Here's the last one, I think....

Group Name: Gangster BB

All you do in this game is pick every NFL game each week against the point spread.

Re: ESPN Pigskin Pick'Em Football Game - 08/31/04 04:03 PM

I was wondering about this one, cuz it's not listed yet on the fantasy index page that I could see.

I'm in. I've been playing this for years, but better step it up now that it's with you guys

I also play the college games, but do not compete -- I know almost nothing about NFL, let alone NCAA -- just for Uber, baby!

Hey plaw, forgive my ignorance but what does this mean?

S/U doesn't matter. It's all about ATS.
Posted By: plawrence

Re: ESPN Pigskin Pick'Em Football Game - 09/01/04 09:03 PM

"Straight Up" and "Against The Spread"

In other words, it doesn't matter if you win or lose the game (S/U), what matters is if you cover the spread (ATS).

I'll tell you what is wrong. Look at the Group name. Somehow I screwed up and left the group. I am in 3 pickem leagues and I remember on one, I was trying to change my name. It must've affected this one too. Don't know.

So what do you think? I can get in I guess for Week 2...just don't know if I want to be 8 or more picks behind. I have 8 correct already, could be 9 tonight, 10 tomorrow. I'm just so disapointed in myself.

Can we have a handicap like in bowling?

I will decide tomorrow if I want to get in and start from scratch in Week 2. I wont think of that today. After all, tomorrow IS another day!

I think when i created the group, I created a "locked" group that no one can join after the season starts.

I'll have to look into that in the morning.

In all my years of playing this game, I never knew a commisioner who did that....

- alert Jgeoff early next season to set up this game, like he did last year.

For now I will just play with my other peeps. With "normal" league settings....I was 9-6 going into tonight, possibly 10-6. You should have been at least a little scared.

I didn't want any members of our group, who were in another group and making some different picks and doing better, to be able to join our group with a better entry in mid-season.

Please post your picks every week. As far as I'm concerned, they count. And I'm the Commissioner, so what I say goes.

Hey! DB resembles that remark, too!

But I ask our probability peeps this: Are the odds of correctly picking all teams CORRECTLY (given that you thought about the match-ups) the same as mistakenly picking them all wrong?

Cuz if the odds ARE the same, then I contend that I beat the odds and did better than anyone else!

Really, tho, what are the odds of picking significantly worse than random? Or is it just some Curse factor?

If there are 14 games, then the odds are 1/2 to the 13th power.

Or, one chance in 16,384.

When you say that you "thought about the match-ups", that presumes that by thinking about them you increase your chances of picking correctly.

But absent any evidence to the contrary, and no insult intended, I don't think it makes any difference in your case how much you think about it.

So, the chances of getting them all right are the same as getting them all wrong.

I'm not sure how to compute the odds of going, say, 3-11 or 11-3, though.

Funny guy. Okay, let me rephrase that... would it make any difference to ONE...?

I assume with adequate research and experience and knowledge, "experts" can increase their odds a LITTLE BIT. We all know those "experts" who suck every week, and we've all lucked out at one point or another.

I supposed the "edge" would be minimal, and probably not significant.

But here's my point: Wouldn't random odds suggest that one would get about half right, 50/50? Like all you "mediocre" pickers this week going 6-7 and 7-6 ... The odds of that would be close to 50/50, right?

That'd make sense, like a bell curve. Never mind. Scratch that.
Posted By: plawrence

Re: ESPN Pigskin Pick'Em Football Game - 10/12/04 12:37 AM

No, you're right.

A record of 7-7, or 6-8 or 8-6 would be the most likely outcomes in a week with 14 games.

It would be like a bell curve.

If there were 10,000,000 weeks with 14 games, 5,000,000 0f those weeks you should go 7-7.

2,500,000 of those weeks you should go 8-6 or 6-8
1,250,00 of those weeks you should go either 9-5 or 5-9
625,000 of those weeks you should go 9-5 or 5-9
312,500 of those weeks 10-4 or 4-10
156,250 of those weeks 11-3 or 3-11
78,125 of those weeks 12-2 or 2-12
39,063 of those weeks 13-1 or 1-13
19,532 0f those weeks 14-0 or 0-14

Hmmm...doesn't add up to 10,000,000

Only 9,980,000

DB! Help, DB.....

2,500,000 of those weeks you should go 8-6 or 6-8

78,125 of those weeks 13-1 or 1-13
39,063 of those weeks 14-0 or 0-14

Now the total is even less...9,960,938

Hmmm....this is clearly wrong. Gotta think about it some more.

Hey Plaw - I'm not up on my bookmaking... can you please explain those numbers to me? How would I have lost $20 going 11-3? How does it work?
Posted By: plawrence

Re: ESPN Pigskin Pick'Em Football Game - 10/19/04 03:43 PM

The -$20 is your season total.

You have to risk $110 for every $100 you want to win. That's how the book makes a profit. They figure the average guy is gonna go .500, so with the 11-10 set-up you have to win 11/21 bets (.524) just to break even.

Your season record is 46-42. So, betting $100 on each game, you would have won $4600 for your 46 winners, but lost $4620 (42 x $110) on your 42 losers.

Net result for the season, -$20.

An 11-3 week, though, wins you $770.

$1100 for your 11 winners, minus $330 (3 x $110) for your three losers.

Re: ESPN Pigskin Pick'Em Football Game - 10/19/04 03:52 PM

BIG difference one or two wins makes! Only down $20 after 6 weeks is pretty good for me, especially after last week

Well, when you figure that the average guy like you or me doesn't really know anything special, and given the bookmakers skill in establishing a point spread that will attract an equal amount of action on each side, and then you realize how hard it is to have a winning percentage of .524 just to stay even......

Boy do we suck at this...!

No one's picked 12 correctly yet.
There are only two 11's and three 10's.
Only one has had double-digits twice.
There's a 3 and at least three 4's.

More breakdown after tonight's game... but it's not pretty!

Re: ESPN Pigskin Pick'Em Football Game - 12/06/04 01:32 PM

I seems I followed my hero pl and his dawg-picking strategy at the wrong time. Who let the dawgs out? WHO? WHO? Boy they sucked this weekend. Not mentioning teams, I had 7 dawg losers. Here are the spreads and the amount of points they lost by:
1 1/2 - 27
6 1/2 - 22
7 1/2 - 27
10 1/2 - 27
1 1/2 - 10
6 1/2 - 30
2 1/2 - 24

....and the 4 winners I had.
1 1/2 - won by 11
10 1/2 - lost by 10 (covered)
7 1/2 - won by 1
3 1/2 - lost by 1

That must be why they call them dawgs.

Hey Pork, slow down will ya? Pick some dawgs.

Sure is, like all fantasy games -- unless YOU won it. :p

Re: ESPN Pigskin Pick'Em Football Game - 12/27/04 03:58 PM

How can you compare the luck vs. skill factor in a game where you have to make 256 picks in which you have a 50-50 chance of being correct, to baseball, in which you have to make 10 picks every day, selecting from 30 choices, over the course of about 180 days?

Not to mention the fact that I won baseball two years in a row, which, I would guess, the chances of being strictly by luck would be somwhere in the neighborhood of zero.

Be happy you're gonna win this and get your "Uber Points" (whatver the hell they are), and start hoping that your "Penis-Obsessed" buddy DM doesn't start relegating you to fourth place in the other games. :p
Posted By: J Geoff

Re: ESPN Pigskin Pick'Em Football Game - 12/27/04 04:14 PM

So you're saying that if you had won, after someone congratulated you, you would've just said, "ahh, no big deal - it was all just dumb luck - I don't deserve it!" ? Ya huh! :p

There's absolutely no skill in picking against the spread correctly more often than not?

Hey, I'm not saying there isn't a lot of luck involved (like in most fantasy games :p ) but it's not like I made my picks randomly, either. :p

Watch - I'll forget to play next week and lose!!
Posted By: plawrence

Re: ESPN Pigskin Pick'Em Football Game - 12/27/04 04:29 PM

All of these games have some element of luck.

I'm just saying that some have a lot more luck than others.

The baseball game had about 54,000 possible choices you could make over the course of the season. Even if you throw out half of them as being impractical (which is, I think, a very generous number to throw out), that still leaves about 27,000, vs. 256 in this game.

Obviously, the more possible choices there are, the less luck is involved in winning.

But you are right. If I had won this game, it would have been because of skill. :p

Right now I'm 10-5, what is considered good for this game?
Posted By: MaryCas

Re: ESPN Pigskin Pick'Em Football Game - 12/27/04 05:08 PM

I'll admit that for the Baseball Fantasy it takes a certain amount of skill in analyzing the weather charts, staying up to 3am and scanning the injury reports. Or is that insanity?

Anything ahead of plaw is good. :p Look at plaw's chart above and you see only JG would be in the money in Vegas. If you could win 8 or 9 every week you'd be doing pretty good. Double digit wins are the exception.

If you were betting real money, and laying 11-10 as you would have to in a sports book, you need to have a winning percentage of .524 to break even.

Anything above that is considered good.

you could have just checked the 5th pla....oh wait you are in 1st in this game, so you could have just checked the 2nd place person's score... :p

Cuz at that point I was too lazy to look - and didn't want to make any stoopit math errors and suffer from premature celebration :p

You'd need to have first been able to celebrate (with another person) to suffer from premature celebration

Re: ESPN Pigskin Pick'Em Football Game - 01/03/05 06:19 PM

Congratulations Oh Great One! You tried to blow it yesterday, but I guess you're not a blower. 7 weeks of double digit wins was too much for us 8-pickers to overcome. Plaw had 8, 8s, I had 7. Douche was a little too erratic. And the other guys....well there's always Golf Best Ball.
Great win for another trophy on the mantle.

Oh, BTW, if I used my pencil correctly (the pointed end), I nosed out the Great Pufficator by one.

I'll post the final chart when ESPN gets around to updating it. I have a feeling it'll be tomorrow, as it's always been on a Tuesday.

Anyway - Barring any recount, I declare myself the winner! Who better to win the PIGSKIN Pick'em than Pork!??

Testing new sig... :p

Guess it's only a matter of time before I start my sig line, and 2 more bowl games until I get my name in the headline of the sports thread

Not so fast there DMC. My Trojan can hold tight while your Sooner is later.

After 2+ years, Pork finally has himself a legitimate championship! :p

Congrats Pork! Your punctilious propensity for picking point-spread winners is praiseworthy!

Hey now!! I won last year's Yahoo Football -- just like you did this year! If you don't think my win was legit (I don't have any wusses complaining about MINE! ), I can just take you off the "Recent Winners" list. :p

But anyway - Thanks, bro!

Did you see the pic I posted of you and LDV at the Cubs game? I didn't even call you Douche!

I didn't know you guys were playing the point-spread one so my scores mean d**k.

Congrats - I am sure the family is so proud. I bet you can use this new claim to fame in picking up 'chicks' also. PL tells me he uses it all the time hopefully you will have more luck that he has with it.

And there should be no recounts since this game had a 'fair and honest' commissioner - not some WussBag, Paper Champion like another game that will go unmentioned had.

And no this one is not just luck - you have to make moves every week. Now that sissy Gridiron Challenge game - that is a luck game you can miss a week and still rack up big points but not this one, miss a week and you are done. A truly manly game - which is why I am surprised that you won. :p

Congrats - keep us all posted on how it does in 'making time with the chicks'. Gee I hope DMC doesn't get jealous reading this.

Hmmm....

Seems to me that if you hadn't "missed" Week 17 in Gridiron Challenge, but changed your team to reflect players who had something to play for like I did (dropping Peyton Manning, for example), youi would have had a shot to finish second.

I guess the game was to "sissy" for you to bother.

Oh, BTW, Big Daddy Wuss, how many fantasy games have you won here?

Re: ESPN Pigskin Pick'Em Football Game - 01/03/05 11:17 PM

Thanks for the "Congrats" MC, DB and BD (who wasn't wuss enough to not congratulate me )

But I'm still waiting to hear from a certain young man who desires to turn the Gangster BB "Big Three" into a "Big Four" -- as well as one of the (arguably) "Top Two" :p

I'm just waiting for the results to be official.

I never give up until the very end. Maybe they'll find a mistake somewhere.

You can give up: You gained 6 on me, and I was 12 ahead of you going into it. :p

But it's okay, I'll wait.

Never mind the Douche stuff.

I noticed that picture. Interesting how DB was very subtly nuzzling his right arm up against Buffy's left boob.

Nice going, DB. My compliments.

My official congratulations, JG. You had quite a stretch there. Hot like fire.

I'll show you how to bet real money next season if you like.

Re: ESPN Pigskin Pick'Em Football Game - 01/04/05 12:18 PM

And as the deposed champion I grudgingly (only kidding)extend my congratulations on a brilliantly played season. I didn't think a Ouija board had such power. And to think that you didn't even put in one-tenth of the hours as some people we know. I hope this helps your Uber Thing (don't they have pills for that?)

Re: ESPN Pigskin Pick'Em Football Game - 01/04/05 04:38 PM

I wanted to compare this to last year , put apparently we never posted standings??? It appears the Top 3 were MC, DB, and PL. I wanted to see last year because I'm sure we all did much better overall (more correct picks, not necessarily percentile wise).

PL third this year, as well as last year, after he said -- and I quote:

Quote:
I am somewhat surprised. Admittedly, I didn't have a very good year. But I still finished over .500, and that was good enough for third place in this league of amateurs.
:D

Amateurs, indeed. MC beat you twice! :p

And I'm an Ama-choor in the truly derogatory sense. Afterall, I can't even find a doubleheader.

A Fantasy Game to me is playing checkers with a Victoria Secrets model.
