Mafia II - 11/05/08 07:30 PM

The new Mafia game is coming out Dec, 31st 2008. I liked the first one more than The Godfather game so this one could be pretty good.

Re: Mafia II - 01/21/10 02:05 AM

I loved Mafia. The music was great, the environment was great, and the story was so well written. I wish I still had my PS2 just to play Mafia. It was such a great game, and in my opinion underrated.

Mafia 2 is on it's way and I must say, the videos I see on Youtube are great! I recommend visiting www.mafia2game.com for more information. I'm excited about this game. I don't have a PS3, so I'll have to buy one soon. I can't wait!

E3 2010: Mafia II - 10 Killer Moments
The best-of-the-best bits of this superb open world '50s crime blockbuster.

Source: IGN.com
by Narayan Pattison - June 15, 2010

In two short months Mafia II's gritty crime extravaganza will be releasing and we just got the chance to play it at E3 2010, so we thought we'd save you some time (hey, we know you're busy) and hit you with the 10 stand-out moments.

1. Random Nudity
This demo started off with a completely different bang than we were expecting. There, right on the counter of your apartment is a vintage PlayBoy magazine. And better yet, hitting the action button brings up an HD slide of a naked hottie sprawled across a desk. Oh, 2K, you had us at "nudity". Tear.

2. Rockin' Tunes
Okay, classing things up a little while you're enjoying your vintage porn are some classic '50s tunes. You'll hear Buddy Holly bopping his way out of the old school radio in your house, as well as plenty of other music that will transport you to the '50s New York setting.

3. Super Aggressive Police
After flicking through Playboy, the first thing we did was walk outside and shoot the first person walking past. What? That's how we roll. Unfortunately, the way the police roll is to charge towards us, blasting away with their guns. We limped into a nearby car and sped off but the aggressive buggers piled into three squad cars and started ramming us. Before we could get away from them, one cop lent out of his window and shot us in the head. Which leads us to…

4. Cool Death Sequences
As Vito was getting shot by the cops, splashes of blood splatter the screen. Once he dies the screen faded to black and white, and as it did we noticed that 2K had gone to the trouble to animate him so that his head slumped realistically against his seat, while the car sped out of control. 2K have nailed attention to detail in Mafia II.

5. Authentic '50s Cars
You could be forgiven for thinking this is a bad thing initially. Yes they control a bit more stiffly and aren't going to be able to match the performance of today's cars. On the other hand, they look cool as Hell and they've got terrific weight as you throw them sideways around corners. We also dug the big plumes of white smoke that surround the tires when you accelerate off heavily.

6. High Calibre Action
Normally getting behind gun turrets is reserved for military shooters but you're given one to take out the target you're trying to whack. As the guy, described as "fat bastard", gets out of the car below you jump on a MG 42 heavy machine gun and unleash Hell. Bullets tear into the car, blowing it up in a bonfire of flames, killing the two guys that just got out of it. Unfortunately Fat Bastard runs into a nearby beer distillery.

7. Great Dialogue
If you continue to use the machine gun turret after Fat Bastard runs off, your buddy Joe will tell you to "shut the bloody thing off before you deafen him." Joe lives up to the 'wise guy' stereotype by peppering banter through the game – and what really impressed us was the dynamic quips he made. For example, when we ducked out and capped someone with a single headshot he said, "Nice shot. At least they gave me someone decent for this job." Next time we pulled off a headshot he wasn't quite as nice about it and told us, "Well, at least you're not completely f**king useless!"

8. Destructible World
Okay, so Mafia II doesn't have a completely destructible environment like Red Faction but it did impress us by tearing up the scenery around us at many points. As we had our furious gun battle with Fat Bastard's cronies in the distillery, concrete would be torn off pillars, beer bottles shattered, paper was shredded and wood was splintered. This, combined with the meaty weapons, made for some great shootouts.

9. Cheeky Physics
Unfortunately we're not talking about butt cheek physics on the PlayBoy bunnies. After blasting our way through the henchmen, we gunned Fat Bastard down in a hail of bullets. As he fell, his cheeks started wobbling, and then rippled violently when his head smacked into the concrete. It's a small touch but yet another example of the attention to detail 2K has put into this epic.

10. It's On Fire
One of the cheeky buggers in the distillery flung a Molotov Cocktail at us. So, as we were leaving the building the fire had already spread across a couple of the distillery's floors. Turns out alcohol is pretty flammable. Who knew? The flames looked great as they licked up the wooden barrels and took over entire sections, causing heat haze and smoke to cloud our vision, and even large chunks of the ceiling to start falling around us.

That's a quick taste of our time with Mafia II for you. Trust us, it's got the goods to be one of the year's best action shooters. We can't wait to soak in the authentic '50s setting as we play out Vitto's struggle from a minor crim doing odd jobs to fighting his way up the ranks as he gets involved with an all-out gang war. You'll get a chance to try it out for yourself soon because the demo we just played will be available for download before the game releases in August.

So excited for this game!

I loved the first installment though it would be hard to convince anyone that there weren't some major problems with the game. Hopefully this one picks up and improves where the last one left off!

The first game in my opinion is THE best game based on organized crime, the sequel looks very promising!
So far no news about online multiplayer in Mafia 2, I think there won't be one... ohwell

Re: 10 Killer Moments, Mafia 2 - 08/11/10 08:07 PM

Just played the demo (now available on PSN and, I'm assuming, Xbox Live). Pretty intense gameplay, the soundtrack is great, and the graphics are impressive, though not the best I have seen. My complaints are few, but worth mentioning. The controls feel a little too loose for my liking, and the camera isn't quite as cooperative as I would like when inside a building. But overall, I was impressed. I can't wait for the release! smile

Re: Mafia II - 08/12/10 09:47 AM

I haven't played the demo yet, a friend of mine had the same complaints you mentioned about the game.

How's the voice acting? Is it as good as the first game?
Posted By: XDCX

Re: Mafia II - 08/12/10 10:33 AM

The voice acting is top-notch, and the dialogue is definitely fitting of the subject matter. Even during serious situations, the mobsters are able to insert a little humor. For instance, when one of your comrades gets shot in the leg during a cutscene, he says something to the effect of "That guy almost shot my dick off", to which another of your partners replies "Don't worry, he missed it by a mile." lol

Another thing I like is that when you get pulled over by the police, you have the option of surrendering yourself. At that point, you can either resist arrest, get arrested, or (if you have the funds) bribe the arresting officer and go free.

One thing I am hoping for is that the city is fun to explore, with side missions and things of that nature. The city looks and feels alive (from what I saw), but if it isn't fun to explore, it doesn't matter how good it looks.

Are there really any other platform games that deal with organized crime besides the Mafia franchise? One could argue the Grand Theft Auto series but those barely qualify!

Don't worry about the reviews, Don Zadjali! Picked it up on Tuesday and the game has met all of my expectations so far. The story is very well crafted and its scope, where you end up going and what you endue seeing, is sup rising to say the least. Pick it up as soon as you can!

I played the demo and enjoyed it. I'mgoing to pick thus up sometime this week.

Re: Mafia II - 08/31/10 04:46 PM

I finally picked this game up and it was worth it. It's super fun. It's funny you collect real life porn as collectibles in the game. You also get into quite a few fist fights in the game which is cool.

Re: Mafia II - 08/31/10 08:01 PM

Yah, but the game's story is really, at least in my opinion, what makes playing the game worthwhile.
Posted By: DonMichaelCorleone

Re: Mafia II - 08/31/10 11:34 PM

Chapter 7 was very boring.

And I won't spoil anything but Chapter 14 is by far the greatest...and the hardest, haven't beat the end of it yet.

But for anyone wondering there is only 15 chapters and A LOT of cut scenes, its more story/cutscenes than action.

WOuld love to play it, but my laptop is way outdated for this one...:S

Re: Mafia II - 10/25/10 04:59 AM

I really enjoyed it. Am waiting to start my new job and have had two weeks off in between, I think I finished it in four days or so but I really enjoyed it!
Wide range of missions, the graphics are great, really enjoyable.

Click to reveal..
The story itself was quite cool how it's bitter sweet. It doesn't really glamourise the life, he gets made and does make money for a while but at the end of the game, he spends 6 years in the prison, his mother dies while he's inside, his sister doesn't want anything to do with him, he loses any friends he had including his best friend and doesn't end up with much except his life and a possible employer. Sequel?

I would vehemently disagree with you there. The GTA series is really the best at it, they're much more versatile and I actually believe their narratives.

I would agree with that but you gotta remember that Rockstar's games don't really focus on the mafia. They're either alot more general (i.e. GTA 4, which you could argue is about the russian mob but not really if you pay attention to the narrative) or they're very, very focused (the DLCs focusing on 1%ers and the "high-class" nightclub scene respectively). As far as how they protray the mafia I'd say they're spot on at Rockstar studios. I've never had an overt problem with the way they represent the various gangs of the world which is why the GTA series is my favorite in terms of crime-based games.

Godfather, Mafia, Mafia II I've always had problems with. Why is it that the games that focus on a very specific part of organized crime seem to have the most flaws?
Posted By: veneratio

Re: 10 Killer Moments, Mafia 2 - 11/05/10 10:00 PM

Yeah Ludovico, I know what you mean.
GTA is by far my favourite series of games (closely followed by the Hitman series).

What I would love is if they made a new Sopranos game, a very improved road to respect for PS3 or Xbox 360.
That would be great...

Re: 10 Killer Moments, Mafia 2 - 11/28/10 01:59 PM

Mafia 1 was epic, a true classic. Mafia 2 could have been a wonderful game, but it failed almost on all grounds except music and graphics.
GTA IV is a killer, i really like playing the missions for the Italians over and over again.
Posted By: SouthEastJ

Re: 10 Killer Moments, Mafia 2 - 12/03/10 09:13 PM

Mafia 1 was a great game, playing Mafia 2 at the moment, really enjoyed it at first but now it seems too exhaustive.

I would really like to see a game based around the mean streets era.

GTA 3, defiantly the greatest mob based game ever made.
Posted By: Mukremin

Re: 10 Killer Moments, Mafia 2 - 12/03/10 09:16 PM

GTA3? what mob is that? I never played GTA3
Posted By: SouthEastJ

Re: 10 Killer Moments, Mafia 2 - 12/03/10 09:20 PM

Based in liberty city like GTA 4. You hop around working for different bosses much like GTA 4. Much of the first half of the game your working for the Mob based out of little italy (St Marks in the game) and the red light district. Its old now, but a great game

Uh, what about story? Mafia 2 story was fantastically crafted!
Posted By: Mukremin

Re: 10 Killer Moments, Mafia 2 - 01/14/11 11:09 AM

The story was ok, not so great as the first game. Like i said all over the mafia 2 forums. Mafia 2 had a great potential, but it failed in the end on almost all levels. Not to mention the crappy worthless DLC's. All we wanted was a "full" game like Mafia 1.

Re: 10 Killer Moments, Mafia 2 - 02/25/11 10:05 PM

I just finished playing MAFIA II, and I gotta say, I thought it was great. Some of the missions focused a little too much on menial tasks (mopping floors, cleaning toilets, loading crates, WTF?), but the rest of the game is superb. Empire Bay is a beautiful city with loads of period detail, the dialogue and music are terrific, the graphics are incredible, and the story is awesome, as well.

People have knocked the game over the fact that there isn't much reason to explore Empire Bay due to the fact that there aren't any side missions. I don't think it's a flaw at all really. The story is great, and the fact that the developers decided to focus on the narrative rather than offer up a bunch of distractions made the story that much better. The game isn't perfect, but it's a solid 9/10, for me. I loved it.
