paulie intentions with NY and is loyalty to tony - 04/15/18 12:37 PM

what were paulie intentions in getting close to johnny besides recognition and respect from NY ?
did he really wanted to help bring the two families closer and keep the good relations ?
seems like he just wanted to kiss johnny's ass and get close to them
if john would have tell this to tony and would also tell that he is the one who told him about the ginny sack joke (we all know he did suspect it was him but didn't do anything) what do you guys think he will do ?
kill him ?
i think deep inside tony loved paulie, hard to imagine him getting whacked. i also think paulie loved him, just he loved money more, unlike sill and chris, but paulie would never betray his friends and he would do whatever tony order him to do.
but if tony knew that it's 100% paulie who is talking with NY he would have order him killed imo
what do you guys think ?

In my opinion,Paulie was sucking up to New York for a very practical reason. In the event that Tony was out of the picture,Paulie was laying the groundwork to become the next Soprano Boss. He figured by pretending to be only interested in good relations between the Families, he would be seen as a guy who could step up and continue the status quo with the Lupertazzis, and that Carmine,(or Johnny,or little Carmine,or whoever) would want him in charge. I think the real situation would have been a surprise to Paulie. Once a snitch, always a snitch. No way would the Lupertazzi's trust someone who betrayed Tony in spite of their years of friendship. If he did it to Tony why wouldn't he do it to a Family he had no history with? And make no mistake,if Paulie was given the contract on Tony, with the promise that New York would back him as new Boss,he would have done it in a heartbeat. Of course New York would deny the arrangement, and Paulie would have been in the same boat as Tony Caponigro in Philly.
On the other point, I think Tony did love Paulie, but thought of him as a loudmouth and a gossip. He was like Tony's pit bull and certainly the toughest guy in the Family, but I don't think Tony would have hesitated for a second to whack him if he had to.

Of course Johnny played Paulie like a fiddle. Which made him meeting Carmine Sr and knowing that Johnny was playing him for a sucker and that Carmine didn't even know who Paulie was. "Carmine thinks the world of you" "Carmine doesn't know who you are".

That was Johnny sack. He used Carmine and his knowledge of people or lack thereof as this big powerful tool. Carmine did indeed know Ralph and would have gladly taken in Ralphie into the family. Johnny didn't want that knowing how Ralph could be, his friendship with Tony etc even if Ralphie was one of the biggest earners in Cosa Nostra period. Ralphie was like a Gravano, Crea, Bellomo type earner..just massive. Of course the boss knows about the capo in charge of their joint construction. He wouldn't know the capo of the glorified crew who was a terrible earner, Carmine cared about $. Paulie couldn't earn for shit, so why would Carmine know or care about him

true.
albert and ralphie were the biggest earners
too bad when tony and ralph had their fight that johnny said carmine doesn't know who you are,
because if he would join them that would be win win situation for them all

I loved Paulie as a character and he was one tough son of a bitch, but he had the social and emotional development level of a 12 year old..

I thought he wanted to get close to Johnny and he was mad at Tony at the time so I think he wanted to inadvertently pit Johnny against Tony as well.

I think Tony did know all along it was Paulie and by knowing it gave Tony a way to use what Paulie was doing in his favor..
Tony would have never killed Pauly.
That would have been like Don Corleone killing Luca Brasi.

This was shortly after the incident in the woods with the Russian, where Paulie lost a lot of his status with Tony. This was made clear with the way Tony talked to Paulie in front of Bobby and Chris in the car on the way back. I'm not sure Paulie was planning out an elaborate scheme to take control as much as he was trying to save his own ass and maybe even get a transfer to the Lupertazzis, as Ralph tried to do beforehand after the Tracee incident.

Don Corleone would have killed Luca Brasi if he found out he was currying favor with other families behind his back.

Who ever said or where was it ever mentioned that Luca Brasi was exclusive to serving only Don Corleone?
A Man like Luca.... in his day, could have been whackin people for many clients under many flags very discreetly and honorably for many reasons.

Luca Brasi practically worshipped the ground Vito walked on, and he feared him as well. It's explicitly stated that Vito was the only man Luca feared. He would go to the gates of Hell if Don Vito told him to. No way he was working for other clients after he started working for Vito. Never.

I'm sure Paulie's betrayal would fall into this category.

If Tony would have found out for certain Paulie was the one who told John Sac about his wife being mocked, he would have been a goner.

In his heart Tony knew who was stirring up some shit within the Family. Paulie went way back to the days of Johnny Boy Soprano so without concrete evidence he wasn’t gonna get clipped. Still he was shady fuck. This is the same guy that strangled his mothers friend for her savings. smh
