Gigi Cestone - 06/02/13 06:07 PM

On season 3 of the Sopranos and Gigi just died and I don't get it. What was the reasoning for killing him off like that? He was one of my favorite characters and would've been interesting to see him later in the series. Just made no sense.

Guy died on the shitter. Gotta love him for that lol.

But I think Chase was just making one of his usual points: That in real life, sometimes people just die. Sad but true.

He did indeed, pizzaboy. He's the one who seems to fit the role of a mobster perfectly - so naturally, he had to die.

Re: Gigi Cestone - 06/08/13 10:03 PM

also done to reinforce the point that whoever was a member and especially charge of the Aprile Crew would fast almost certain doom......
1. Jackie Aprile
2. Richie Aprile(2nd and last time as head of crew)
3. Gigi Cestone
4. Ralph Ciffaretto
5. Vito Spatifore
as well as most of their members die or be shelved from injuries:

Febby Putrulio was in their crew before he went into Witness Protection, this is why Tony kills him in the college visit episode
Bryan Spatifore gotten beaten into a vegetative state by Sally Mustang
Beansie Gaeta was in their crew in the 70s-80s and was crippled by Richie
Gene Poncevorvo kills himself being trapped in between a rock and hard place after Tony refuses to let him retire
Donny K gets beaten into a coma by Johnny Sac then retires afterwards
Jackie Jr. and his crew of Dino and Carlo all get killed after attempting to to rob a card game

no Aprile crew member or associate seemingly ever lived healthily to the end of that show

Paulie is the captain of that crew... and healthy as of the last episode.

Re: Gigi Cestone - 06/09/13 03:33 AM

he's captain of that crew in name only just to oversee construction and they only illude to him accepting it, nothing further is ever said. Plus that was for what maybe the last 2 episodes in terms of length. I think my original comment stands up pretty legit overall. Plus once Paulie "takes over" the crew is decimated. There's nobody left in the crew everyone that was is dead or in Tony's old crew at the end. Plus with Tony (likely being murdered in the last episode) Sil in a coma, Bobby Dead, Paulie was likely to become acting boss immeadiately although the entire Soprano family at that point was pretty decimated as well.

Gigi was a good character he looked talked and acted like a mobster I would've liked to see him further into the series myself

The guy who played Gigi also played the local mob capo in Showtime's now off-the-air Brotherhood. Think he played a guy named Alfonse Capozzi or something like that. Was a great show

Gigi (John Fiore) is from that area of the country (Providence, Boston, etc). They allude to it in 2.01 (before he kills Philly Parisi). Philly was a capo of that crew Jackie Aprile, Chucky Signore, PHILLY PARISI then Richie Aprile

…I may be wrong but I thought that's how the succession went.

I really liked gigi's character 2 but i seems to me there were 2 big reason for his death. 1, the curse of the aprile crew thing where all the capos end up dead and second that ralphies character needed to progress bc it was a pretty major storyline that season and he couldnt become capo while gigi was still alive. But i agree the way they just killed him off was pretty shitty lol

Re: Gigi Cestone - 08/18/13 08:04 AM

The reason Tony picked Gigi as captain was because he hated Ralph. The Aprile crew didn't like Gigi because he was an outsider from another crew. However, Tony couldn't change his decision because it would make him look undeceive. When Gigi dies unexpectedly he makes Ralph captain. Remember that scene? Ralph was so relieved and he told Tony to have a drink with him. Tony just got up and left without saying a word. Tony basically said "I promoted you because you deserve it, but I still don't like you." Great scene.

That is a great scene Ted. It showed Tony respected Ralph as an earner, but not as a person. Gigi was considered an outsider to the Aprile crew and was promoted to Capo of that crew because he was loyal and had Tony's trust. The rest of the crew just took orders as to not anger Tony. It was a shame that Gigi died off, that character would have brought more to the show in my honest opinion.

Gigi was from Jersey, he's in the flashback scenes of the Sitdown from 95, and he was apart of Junior's crew. For whatever reason, he hid out in Boston shortly after that and came back after Tony eliminated Mikey Palmice & Chucky Signore, and bust Junior down in rank.

The junior soprano crew and the aprile crew, were two different crews. This is just going off of memory for me, but this is what the successions for the crews i think. J.soprano crew- junior to philly spoons to murf lupo to bobby bacala. Aprile crew- jackie aprile to richie aprile to gigi cestone to ralphie ciferitto to vito spatafore to paulie walnuts.

Re: Gigi Cestone - 12/22/13 01:30 AM

They are different crews, but Gigi was originally a part of Junior's crew. Ralph mentions in one episode that the guys felt he was sort of an outsider for being a defector, when pleading his case that he should've been made Capo.

Re: Gigi Cestone - 12/22/13 01:38 AM

right, Gigi definitely wasnt respected by ralphie, like what ralphie said gigi was pretty much put in their by tony to keep an eye on the aprile crew after richie went rogue.
