The killing of Chris' dad's alleged killer. Didn't get this, seemed a weird story line that was never brought up again. The guy set it was a set-up, I couldn't tell if it was the killer or just someone Tony wanted to go.

I always thought that part was weird because fact is if it wasn't his dad i'm sure Chris would've killed him anyway. Possibly it was to get more loyalty from Chris, by allowing him to do it instead of quietly giving it to say Paulie and never telling CHris of his existence. As Chris says anyway it doesn't matter in the end because Tony wants him dead.

It could be both, NickyScarfo. But I clearly remember Chris telling Adriana more than once after the ex-cop's death, "you don't know what this guy [Tony] did for me."

He was definitely the killer. Before Chris says anyone had died all he indicated is "Remember Dickie Moltisanti" ? The cop responds with "Listen I don't know who told you I was responsible for the death of your father" indicating that he had in fact killed Dickie because Chris never said he was dead. Than its undeniably confirmed when the cop breaks his own bannister and hides behind the couch screaming "I'm sorry" with clear indication that he did it.

No he doesn't after Chris says "Remember Dickie Moltisanti"? He says "No,Was he a friend of yours?" then after a scene with Tony talking to Bobby when you clearly miss some of Chris and the cops conversation he says "Listen I don't know who told you I was responsible for the death of your father but there informtion was either faultyor they're delibrately lying to you ". I'm not saying he didn't kill him but he didn't say what you said he did and he denied knowing Dickie or Jilly Ruffalo as you would when a gun is pointed at you.

I think that he really was the killer of Chris's dad because Tony wouldn't have had to trick Chris into doing the hit. Chris always loved and respected Tony, his surrogate father figure.

Also,Chris would have done the hit just for the increased status in the Family.Being made was OK,but what Chris wanted most of all was to be taken seriously and respected by the guys.

It is possible that Tony thought that, since Chris would do it anyway,he could solidify the bond by telling Chris that the cop killed his dad,but to me,the scene just doesn't play that way when I watch it.

The victim was a long time asset for Tony, and as a former cop, would have still had valuable contacts.Cops never really retire, they just don't go into the office anymore. They still socialize at fundraisers, wakes, conventions, etc.,so info can still be gotten. I really think that Tony actually did something decent for Chris, even if it cost him a PD snitch.

Chris doesn't get enough credit for his ability as a smooth operator, in his talking to the cop he figured it out one way or the other. Even for a dope head he was sharp as a fox.

I think the point is that you're not supposed to know. Chris has to trust tony's word and even if he doesn't tony said the guy has to go so he has to go regardless of the reason.

The guy may have killed chris' dad, maybe he didn't, it didn't matter. Maybe Tony as geniunely doing chris a solid by giving him vengence or maybe he was manipulating chris. In that world you more often than not don't know anything for sure and just have to go by what you're told.

I think that was the point of that scene. The audience doesn't have all the information and doesn't know and it ultimately doesn't matter because that's how it is in that life.

I always thought it was because you couldn't kill a cop. But for some reason, a retired or ex cop was a different story.

That's why Tony waited until right after the retirement party to have him whacked. Imo, there's no doubt that he was Dickie's killer. As others have said, there was no reason to lie to Chris as he didn't need a reason to kill upon command.

I think there's reason to lie, it brings chris even closer to tony, makes him feel more indebted to him. It's the exact type of con a guy like tony would play.
