The Godfather in other movies - 12/07/04 08:45 PM
Do you know of any movies where the Godfather movie was mentioned-directly or indirectly.
Funny I cant remember any movie, just The Sopranos of course.
They mention it a lot in The Sopranos, but hey...Uncle Junior is JOHNNY OLA !
Any other movies/series?

Re: The Godfather in other movies - 12/07/04 10:04 PM
My first pick would be The Freshman (1990).
Clark Kellogg (Mathew Broderick) is a young man starting his first year at film school in New York City. After a small time crook steals all his belongings, Clark meets Carmine "Jimmy the Toucan" Sabatini (Marlon Brando), an "importer" bearing a startling resemblance to a certain cinematic godfather. When Sabatini makes Clark an offer he can't refuse, he finds himself caught up in a caper involving endangered species and fine dining.
The Freshman is a horrible movie, but good example.
Apperently Youve Got Mail has a big Godfather referance, but never having seen it, I cant say for sure. The IMDb has a long list. I'm not on my home computer, or I'd link you to it.

Yeah, "You've Got Mail" with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan has a few references to "The Godfather". They're quite funny.
Another movie that comes to mind is "City Slickers II" with Billy Crystal. One of the characters is always quoting verbatim dialogue from the movie.

Analyze This makes an indirect reference to The Godfather. Billy Crystal is telling Robert DeNiro that he had a dream that he was shot, and that DeNiro was crying over him. And DeNiro replies " I was Fredo, I DON'T THINK SO!"

Here is what I was talking about. Some of the movies in the various lists have got to be a little off. Goodfellas? Raging Bull? Millers Crossing?

What reference was made in that one?
"Don't worry Vader, I'll make Luke and offer he can't refuse!"
C'Mon now, really!

There is movie called Serendipity. It is a love story. The main guy in the movie compares his girlfriends with GF and GF2. He says something like "But she's like The Godfather II. It's a great movie in its own right, but you never really get the first one out of your mind"

Yea I saw that movie, its also something like "Godfather Part 2, maybe one of greatest movies of all time, but to truly appriciate it you need to see Part 1".

Re: The Godfather in other movies - 12/08/04 10:22 AM
I don't think The Freshman is a bad film at all, and Brando's reprisal of his role as Don Corleone should make it a "must see" for all GF fans.
Broderick plays an NYU film student, who just happens to be studying Godfather II. There's a memorable scene in which Broderick is in his film class, and the professor is showing the class the boathouse scene between Michael and Geary.
As the scene plays for the class, the professor is shown mouthing the words of the dialogue, along with the characters on screen.
There's another great scene in which Brando is shown buying fruit from a neighborhood stand. His costume and the set bear an uncanny resemblance to the scene in GF when Don C. is about to be shot.
The film also features Bruno (Young Clemenza) Kirby, and a cameo by Gianni (Carlo Rizzi) Russo.

In Arizona Dream theres Paul (Vincet Gallo) watching TV, when The Godfather is on, he starts to quote Michael and Fredo in the boathouse scene, even faster than the real characters hehe...nice scene....
And I know besides those movies which are mentioned about a few Soaps where the Godfather was mentioned/referred to. In "Gilmore Girls" (many many references, My sis told me
), Friends, King Of Queens, The Nanny (she wakes up and sees a horse head next to her
), most of them with the"Ill make him an offer he cant refuse" quote...
Im currently collecting clips for a home-made-DVD in which Pacino is mentioned....

In a very average film called "Mickey Blue Eyes," Hugh Grant is marrying into a mafia family. As a way of reminding himself, he says that he must rent a bunch of mafia films, including all 3 Godfathers. The funny thing about it was that the scene contained James Caan.

I think the Godfather has also been acted on with the Simpsons, you know, FatTony.
Also, on SouthPark one of the kids acted as the Godfather. Heehee

GF has been done on the Simpsons at least a few times. There was the scene where a steroid-enhanced Marge beats up some guy exactly as the Sonny beating Carlo scene took place. There was one where Mo was telling bed time stories to the Simpons baby about Fredo, Moe Green, etc.

Re: The Godfather in other movies - 12/14/04 07:56 PM
Seinfeld's "The Bris", where Jerry and Elaine are nervous about being godparents. Jerry is "OUT" as godfather and Kramer is "IN". The show ends with the parents kissing Kramer's hand as the door on Kramer's apartment is shut ... a la GF1.
Also, Married With Children's "The Godfather" where Al becomes the neighborhood godfather when Kelly starts dating a local councilman. Al takes on the personna of Don Vito Corleone.
Al: (In a Marlon Brando voice) "Don't ask me about my business, Peg!"
Al: (In a Marlon Brando voice) "One day I will ask of a favor. Now this day may never come... (normal voice) But we both know it probably will!"
Very funny!
The Godfather was spoofed on "Second City TV" . . . .
Also my favorite send up of The Godfather, is Billy Crystal's "City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold".
Jon Lovitz, playing Billy Crystal's wayward brother, quotes, to the amazement of Daniel Stern's character the "This is the Business we've chosen" scene.
Later, in the caves, they hum The Godfather Theme.
If you've never seen this movie, then you must go out and rent it !
The first movie, City Slicker, is very funny also.
Ya Gotta See It ! !

In Hot Shots! Part Deux Topper Harley&Ramada are at that restaraunt eating and they show people acting out the scene where Michael and McClusky and Solozzo are talking. Then they show Mike getting up and going to the bathroom.

There was this old episode of "My Wife & Kids" a couple of years ago (which means I vaguely remember it) where the main character is rushing home to see a Godfather marathon on TV. He said that he cannot miss the wedding scene in the beginning of the film because it's important. He ends up driving his wife crazy about it.

Wasn't there an episode of The Simpsons with James Caan where Sonny's assassination at the toll booths was recreated? I seem to have a memory of it.
Also, while not exactly in the same vein as what we're discussing, Zero Mostel did a turn as a Mafia Don (as well as the President of the United States) in the little-seen 1975 comedy Foreplay.
Signor V.
Signor V. The episode of the simpsons (which I'm sure someone has pics of) dealt with Bart making his clubhouse into the Playboy Mansion. And the playboy mansion wouldn't be complete without James Caan (that is a line from the show) so Caan leaves with Mr. krobapple (?) the school teacher and he gets gunned down at the toolbooth, then says something like "next time I'm taking a plane"

I noticed another Simpsons reference last weekend. In the 3rd or 4th season, Homer buys Lisa a pony to win back her affection. When Lisa wakes up in her bed in the next morning, the music playing is the same as when Woltz wakes up in his bed . Lisa notices something in her bed, then pulls off the covers revealing the the pony in bed next to her. She then lets out a horrified scream. Hilarious.

In an episode of the TV series "Las Vegas" Ed Deline
( played by James Caan ) is shooting a commercial for the Hotel. But he just doesn't like doing it and feels stupid with his lines.
So the director pulls Caan over to the side and tells him that he needs to speak to the audience and says to him
"Speak with authority, the way Sonny spoke to his brother in that scene from The Godfather." And Caan replies to him "I've never seen The Godfather." And the director says " You're kidding? That movie is a classic." And Caan has this dumbfounded and confused look on his face.
The later on in the same episode, the director for the commercial shoot has his hand over Caan's wife's hand and is gently rubbing it. Caan is getting really pissed and finally says to the director " You touch my wife again, and I'll kill ya!"
An obvious referenece to his line in GF when he tells Carlo "you touch my sister again, and I'll kill ya."

That's a line from The Godfather?? I thought you just said that to the waither because you were protecting me! SB : (flinging the dish at the waiter) "Hey, what the hell is this? Frozen cheesecake?
Waiter : "Now clean it up! You spoiled guinea brat!"
Actually, what I said to the waiter was "Hey? Who the hell do you think you're talking to like that? If you raise your voice to my sister again, I'll kill ya!"
I sort of paraphrased Sonny's line.
Boy, between you, Mama Mig and DMC, I'm never going to live that one down, huh?

I know for sure that there is a simpsons episode, in which Homer - in a daydream - walks through the streets similar to Little Italy wearing a white coat exactly like Fanucci. An old women gives him a doughnut saying something like "Don Homer, take this beautiful doughnut I've baken for you!"
Does anybody know this episode?
There is a part on Family Guy when stewie throws his dish on the ground and says "Now Clean it up" but maybe I'm looking too far into it

I only have one: I watched the TV show Law and Order: SVU the other night. The detectives were studying video from a hotel security camera when one of them, spotting a heavy-set man in hat and trench coat emerging from an elevator, said, "Hey, there's Luca Brasi."

SIMPSONS
Troy Mclore has been rumoured to have sex with fishes.
One day he comes to the bar and one of the mobsters (Fat Tony's guy) said:
"Boss, I thought you said he's dead!"
Fat Tony replies: "NO! I was saying that he
sleeps with the fishes!"

There was this really silly movie starring Asian comedian Johnny Yune called "They Call Me Bruce?" There were the obligatory mafia goons that always seem to pop up in these goofball comedies. Anyway, the Don tells one of his underlings that he's getting promoted to Consiglieri, and the guy gets all choked up and says, "Yuh mean... like Robert Duvall???"

in FAMILY GUY, Peter works as representative of his cigarete company and tries to "convince" the Senator to allow children to smoke by killing a prostitute and saying "this girls doesn't have a family... it is as if she has never existed" which was originally Tom Hagen's line.

A few years back, there was an animated WB television series called Animaniacs. One of the running skits was called Goodfeathers with the three protagonists as, well...pigeons (or rats with wings as we call 'em in NYC). There was a recurring character called The Godpigeon who would wander into the stories every so often unintelligibly mumbling in a Brando-esque voice.
Signor V.
This might be a stretch but here goes. In a movie called The Ambulance starring Eric Roberts, Richard Bright (Al Neri), plays a NYC Detective named "McClosky."

My favorite metion of GDF was in the film HOT SHOTS. They are at a funeral for this charecter named 'Dead Meat'(ha), who of coarse has just died. Loyd Briges steps up to give the euligy, which went like this: "Dead Meat is dead.So is Tattalia,Barzini, and all the heads of the five families."
