Why did people stop singing when Joey Zasa entered - 05/20/14 04:18 AM

Beginning of Godfather 3 everybody's singing at this party and then Joey enters the room and sings along with them and everybody just stops, why is this?

I think it's to show that they were uncomfortable around him, and/or that he's a scumbag.

Plus he was bringing down the property value in their neighborhood back home. He was kind of like a modern day slumlord like the first guy the trilogy shows Vito Corleone to kill, in Godfather II. Andy Garcia wanted to kill Zasa to show he was loyal to his uncle. I think biting Zasa's ear was not a good move... he was too easily angered.

Everyone was shocked that a guy like Zasa would be invited to the ceremony, being the lowlife thug that he was, with his neighborhood wrecking business practices.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it the Ant who bursts into song? I think that seeing the Ant was more of a chilling moment for the attendees, being that he was known as somewhat of a cross between Tony Spilotro and Mad Sam DeStefano.

Directorial license. It was a dramatic touch to show us that Zasa was a bad guy (as if we couldn't figure it out from his thuggish bodyguard).

As Turnbull had said, it was FFC adding a dramatic touch showing that the character of Joey Zasa was not respected but feared by others that knew or heard of him.

TB is right. I thought Talia Shire did a great job in refocusing everyne back into the song.

The original poster Philip_Lombardo is right to call that scene out as ridiculous. A huge crowd of people singing with a band in a room and one guy peeks around a door and starts singing with them and everybody stops like someone set off a bomb. This is one of 100 ways in which GF3 is sloppy.

If taken literally, The Ant would probably be advertising to the room that he is homosexual and is looking for companionship that night.

Exactly TB. Also, I think it helped to contrast the street people like Zasa with the kind of people Michael was or was trying to become.

The actor who played The Ant had the most frightening face in the entire cast. Garcia and Mantegna just did not seem or look like Mafioso. Godfathers 1 and 2 had great casting, but 3 had awful casting. Sofia Coppola being cast was worst mistake of the movie.

loll! who would you have chosen to replace Sofia?? she was also the baby that got baptized in GF1

If I had a time machine,I would send Jaime-Lynn Sigler (Meadow Soprano)back to 1990 and given her the role of Mary.

From Wiki:
Julia Roberts was originally cast as Mary, but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Madonna wanted to play the role, but Coppola felt she was too old for the part. Rebecca Schaeffer was set to audition, but she was murdered. Winona Ryder dropped out of the film at the last minute.
(My personal opinion, given the above choices, would be that Winona was the best pick).

Also, Sofia was in all 3 Godfather films. She played a 9 year old in the Ellis Island scenes in part II.

I think that FFC did it that way to show the audience that Zsa Zsa was NOT invited by Michael to the celebration and was on the 'OUTSIDE' looking in, making the disruption to show that even though he was not invited to be a part of the 'inner circle' he still invaded the celebration.

They were checking names at the door. He would already have made a commotion there if he forced his way in. There was no indication that he wasn't invited. He was a member of the Corleone family.

Yes, but it looked to me as if an 'inner circle' of guests was created. If you look closely there were those guests who were actually partaking in the inner room celebration....and then there were those, like the press, who were on the outer perimeter of the room looking in.

At least that's how I remember it. Been a long time since I watched it though, so I could be wrong.

One thing I find interesting about that sequence is Grace Hamilton's comment upon seeing the Ant: "What is a guy like that doing at Michael Corleone’s house?"

That a reporter would show surprise at a "spooky looking guy" being at Michael's house indicates how successful Michael was at projecting a veneer of legitimacy and insulating himself from the street-level Mafia.

Not knowing Italian, I was always under the impression that Zasa interrupted a "G rated" song being enjoyed by families and children with an "X rated" line. Ant making the international hand sign for fellatio seemed to illustrate what Zasa had just sung. The combination of the two plus how they peeked into the room caused everyone to stop in their tracks. Can anybody provide the translation of the lyrics Zasa sings?

It wasn't an X-rated gesture. The refrain, "Qui si sona" refers to musical instruments. Zasa pipes up, "...la trombone" and the Ant makes like he's working the slide of a trombone.

Thanks TB! It might have been funnier if he did sing something blue.
