WHAT WAS MARY'S EDUCATION?

In his letter to his children Michael says he let Kay have them so that she could properly educate them (presumably because she was in New Hampshire they would go to elite boarding schools and Ivy League level schools). We know Anthony was in the middle of law school when he dropped out, but we never have a clue about what education Mary had. In fact Mary's character seems as dumb as a box of rocks. She knows nothing about business, she doesnt seem to have any interest other than in whining to her father and lusting for Vincent. I do not want this thread to be a bashing Sofia Coppola deal, but shouldnt FFC have put more depth into this character...some kind of back story?

Wonton, I recall in the novel there is some mention of her attending Miss Darlene's Beauty Academy where she majored in electrolysis. I agree there is no need gratuitous comments about SFC's acting ability or nose.

After all Michael was setting up all these charities, his Vito Andolini fund,etc. and it looked as though Mary was going to be the one to run these organizations. So if I had to guess, I would say that she majored in business.

As for her being a business major, the dialogue between Mary and Michael is telling...

"Tony says that I'm a front for the foundation...That you're using me to pull the strings. To get the money where you want it."

Michael denies this, and Mary continues

"What is this really for? Why are you doing this? Why am I doing this?"

and then..

"Dad I want this to bring me closer to you."

Does that sound like a business major? Wouldn't a business major have read the documents and asked more incisive questions??

DC, my good friend, the dead give away is the "Why am I doing this?" This is proof positive that she majored in philosophy at some extremely LIBERAL college, where she also probably learned that communism was better than capitalism.

DC, your slippin. Five ten years ago wouldn't you have gotten to me with an observation like this?

Considering the tipoff that her Michael allowed Kay to oversee the children's education...that is an extremely insightful observation.

Considering that however, it's also amazing that Kay would have allowed Michael to use Mary as a 'front' in the way he did.
