Michael made? - 02/28/10 04:33 AM

Hi I'm a big godfather fan and mafia reader. my question is does anyone know when Mike was "Made" into the Corleone family or was their no induction ceremony for him since his father was head of the Family?

There's no indication of it. His murder of Sollozzo probably sufficed.

Also, not all Mob families initiate a member in a formal ceremony, Fat Vinny Teresa, in his autobio, "My Life in the Mafia," said that "you just got called to the office one day and got a pat on the shoulder," or something similar. A Don is a sovereign and can do whatever he wants. If he wants to elevate his son, he can do so without any ceremony. There's no indication that either Junior Gotti or Bill Bonanno were ever formally made.

actually there was a ceremony for Junior Gotti. It happened Christmas Eve 1988. Both Victoria Gotti and Mike DiLeonardo who was also made at the same ceremony have verified this

There was a sort of ceremony for Michael at the end of The Godfather when everyone came in and kissed his hand. I saw it as some kind of affirmation that he really was the legitimate Don. Same for Vincent.

well... truth be told... it is my understanding that this "making" is a requisite in the event that they're a part of a family "back home".

Not really. There is difference between being made and becoming a don. At the end of the movie, Clemenza et al simply acknowleged their acceptance of him as don.

olivant, what is your opinion of Vincent being made at the end of part 3? Is it me, or did it look kind of ridiculous and last minute!?

Being made appears to combine acknowledgement by the family that one has murdered on orders of the family and some form of acceptance into the family whether formal or informal. Vincent's murder of Zasa was on behalf of the family, but was not ordered by the family (Michael). Mike's passing of the torch to Vincent in GFIII was not all that ritualized, but it did suffice. There was nowhere else for Mike to go with the family. Either he passes the torch or keeps the family whichhe didn't want to do anymore.

I think the scene which you are referring to is when Vincent is named Don. I think Vincent was already a made man before GF 3 strats. Even though Michael didn't induct him he does mention that he worked for Joey Zasa who handled the Corleone Business in new York so it is possible that Zasa inducted him into the family
