MICHAEL IN WHITE FEDORA W/SHOTGUN - 08/14/08 07:34 PM
I have a paperback of "The Godfather" that came out after the movie, with still photos from the movie in the book.
There is one photo, captioned "Michael the Avenger" that shows Pacino wearing a white fedora, firing a shotgun (or "lupara").
Obviously this scene was not in either GF or GF2. To my knowledge, it is not even available as a "deleted" scene.
My guess is that they filmed a scene of Michael killing Fabrizio in GF that was never used. (I'm guessing Michael would kill Fabrizio himself because of the particularly treasonous nature of his crime.)
But, perhaps because FFC knew (or at least sensed) that there would be a sequel, GF2, in which Fabrizio would finally be whacked (why else would they not avenge his treason in GF?), he felt he could leave that scene on the cutting floor.
Has anyone else seen this photo of Michael, or know what happened to this scene?

Harlan Lebo includes several pictures of the "White Fedora" sequence (Miohael killing Fabrizzio) in his outstanding book, "The Godfather Legacy." According to Lebo, FFC attempted to shoot the scene in NYC at a pizzeria, but Fourth of July weekend traffic ruined it. He later reshot it in Sicily but the sequence was never used. However, stills of that unseen scene are all over the place.
What I wouldn't give to see that scene!

Turnbull: Thanks for that information, it's been bugging me for years. I bought Harlan Lebo's book years ago, and don't recall seeing any reference to this scene. Did it come out in a revised edition?

ME, the photos and story were in both editions of Lebo's book. It's in pp.181-3 of the second edition (probably close to those pages in the first edition).

Hey TB. Is that Coke ad correct for 1955?

More'n likely, PB. Even more authentic:
Luncheonettes and other eatires (including pizzerias) had pictures of their sandwiches adorning their walls, with Coke prominently featured. Coca-Cola gave them away in return for free advertising, Note the card for what appears to be a ham sandwich--the price, 45 cents, was right for 1955.

Incredible eye for detail, that FFC.

For the record: When the Aida Pizzeria, our first neighborhood pizzeria, opened in 1955, a slice cost 15 cents. At the pizza joints on or near the boardwalks in Coney Island and Rockaway Beach, the price was 10 cents in the winter, 15 cents in the summer.
