GF 3 - 06/14/08 10:19 PM

Once I said to myself, I will never watch that movie again. But i did (I was forced to). The storyline is shit, Pacino acts like an idiot, it is ridiculous, it is an embarrassement!

Re: GF 3 - 06/14/08 10:29 PM

We've had this discussion many many times over.

It all comes down to one's own opinion.

I agree that it is no where even close to GF and GFII. But as a stand alone it wasn't all that bad. Terrible casting of some characters, and some bad acting here and there.

But I wouldn't go as far as saying that about Pacino.

Re: GF 3 - 06/15/08 09:59 PM

GIII is certainly not a favorite of mine, and it has nothing to do with what everyone else says about the movie. There are some movies that many people love that I thought were just okay, and there are films that I like that others hated.

I wouldn't go as far to say G3 was "crap." The problem with G3 is that it succeeded two classic films. GI and GII are hard films to live up to, so I think GIII was going to come up short compared the other two regardless of what FFC and Puzo did. However, I still maintain that the film could have been better if it had a stronger plot and different casting choices for certain characters--mainly Mary. I know it has been said many times before, but Sofia Coppola is a horrible actress. I've only seen GIII twice, and it was a struggle BOTH times to get through any of her scenes.

Re: GF 3 - 06/16/08 01:16 AM

HBO had it on last evening. In the opening scenes, as Michael is reading his letter to his children, we see the camera scan the abandoned Tahoe estate and as the scene changes to New York, it says "NEW YORK 1979" on the screen and we are shown the downtown skyline of NYC. After so many veiwings of this movie, for the first time I realized that there is a flaw in the showing of the NY downtown skyline for it supposedly being 1979. Can anyone guess or does anyone already know what that flaw is?

I'll have to guess here:
Either the TV transmitter hadn't yet been mounted atop the WTC, or the domed building next to the WTC (Deutche Bank?) hadn't yet been built?

You are the man TB! Great eye!

As a matter of fact I am pretty sure that in 1979 the entire waterfront area, across from the WTC, along the river, which is now called The World Financial Center / Battery City, was still just wetlands that consisted of weeds and high grass. I don't believe that it started to be developed until the very early eighties.

What would you do if I said that Godfather 3 was better then Godfather 1 and Goodfellas put together?

Francis Ford Coppolla should be shot for casting his daughter.

No he shouldn't. It Wynona Rider got sick and he had no choice. It wasn't personal, it was business.

A sick Wynona would still have been better than a healthy Sophia.

Still, after all these criticisms, noone has ever stated just how Sophia was bad in the part. To me, having raised 5 daughters who were all 19 at one time, she acted completely natural.

To be honest, I don't think she was that awful, especially for not being a real actress.

Re: GF 3 - 03/09/09 03:59 AM

just saw the movie for the first time, and well it is decent to say...personally i can't stand mafia movies that involve times that are more recent. really though godfather III was decent...hard to follow at times, but hey it could had been worse.

Re: GF 3 - 03/12/09 06:16 PM

I know that this is a topic we have visited many times but since we are hearing confessions again...I thought Sofia did a pretty decent job. She is very attractive (IMO). The movie as a whole could have been more polished in areas. Some scenarios were unbelievable (Calo killing Lucchese with his glasses, Al Neri roaming through The Vatican unnoticed, The Atlantic City Commission Massacre, etc.) No doubt that the casting was a bit "careless"...Come on, guys - "Father Guido Sarducci" in a GF film?!? George Hamilton as the Family's attorney? I personally did like Joe Mantegna (Joey Zasa) he is a class act as an actor and a gentleman. He comes from my mom's old neighborhood in Cicero, Illinois. We love him up here! But the storyline as a whole had too many holes and events that made us true GF lovers cringe. My confession is through for now. In the words of Cardinal Lamberto; "Go on, my son..."

She and Andy Garcia could have made a great gnocchi tape.

Mark, I agree with your March post about Sophia. She gave a credible performance. She portrayed the ingenue, ebullience, and romanticism that one expects of a 19 year old girl.

She played a well off, somewhat spoiled, daughter of a prominent Italian, who was of an age at which she would be rebelling against her father. In other words, as Johnny Fontaine once said, she didn't even have to act.

The bad acting in that movie, as I have said often was Eli Wallach.

Re: GF 3 - 04/22/09 10:37 PM

It was Sofia's voice that annoyed me, that whiny, nasally tone. Perhaps that's just how she speaks, but it grated on my nerves.

I wasn't listening to her...I was only watching! tongue

Re: GF 3 - 05/18/09 12:11 AM

I thought Sofia was uhh... Pretty bad.
Just sort of spoke in a mono-tone...
It's a frustrating movie becasue there were just a few things they could have changed to make it great.

1) Sofia Coppola... I know Wynona was supposed to be there and it was a last minute thing but... She was just too "Duh" and un-convincing.

2) The scene at the beginning with Michael's award from the pope felt like it was trying to relive the wedding scene from GF1 with the singing but badly. Good to see Fontaine but.. Ugh.

3) Connie. Connie in my opion had way to bigger hand in this film, being in the sit down with Vincent and Zaza, making decisions on clipping people.. Her singing in the beginning, her quip with "Will somebody please hail mary" in front of the bishop..

4) Vincent. I know he's supposed to be Sonny's boy but he was over the top, he was the 'Jackie Jnr Aprile' of the Godfather, he would never have been a Don, the shouting, the lack of control etc... Just thought it was a bit over the top.

If these things were different, it could have been so much better.
Thoughts?
