Harry Stromberg, alias ‘Nig Rosen’ and also known as "The Mahoff" was born in Russia in 1902 and immigarted with his parents on the east side of New York in 1906.He was first arrested when he was 13 years old and went to jail for burglary when he was 19. After his release he was a tuff young man and worked as an enforcer for the Lepke mob who terrorized the garment industry. He also did work for Meyer Lansky and Frank Costello.During the mid 1920's Stromberg,a Russian Jew, was a New York import, who moved to Philadelphia,The City of Brotherly Love, during the prohibition period to stake his claim in the city’s booming illegal potential.During his rise up Rosen had a lot of connections in New York,Philly and Chicago. He had ties to Rothstein and Luciano.Even Al Capone had support from Rosens jewish mob In Philly.

Harry Stromberg’s power base was largely located in the southeast area of Phily. He was able to gather young hoodlums of Jewish,Irish and even Sicilian,Calabrese extraction, picking up petty rackets such as gamling and robbery along the way.Nig Rosen’s closest underlings were Willy Weisberg,Herman "Mugsy" Taylor, Irving Blitz.Wiesberg and Taylor both had close connections with the Chicago mob.Rosen formed and became the leader of the infamous 69th street gang. They operated mostly with prostitution, labor racketeering and extortion.Through the years,in Philadelphia Rosen became a major player in the gambling business. The fact is the majority of organized crime in Philly was controlled by the Jewish syndicate. An inner war broke out in the Jewish underworld between 1926 and 1928.There was a vicious gang war in Philadelphia between the followers of Max”Boo Boo” Hoff,Philly’s king of bootlegers, and the Haim brothers. Peace was restored and a new syndicate was created in Philly, led by jewish mobsters like Hoff,Lazar and Schwartz, but also including Dully and the Lanzettis.Rumours were that Rosen was involved in the murder of the Lanzetti brothers and took over their rackets especialy the drug business.Later Rosen also attended the famous Atlantic City Conference. On May 9th, 1929 at the President Hotel on the Broadwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the first meeting of what was to become the organization of the national crime syndicate took place. The meeting was organized by Meyer Lansky and Nucky Johnson, and was attended by many mobster the came from around the country.Fella's like Al Capone and Jake Guzik of Chicago, Dutch Schultz, Lucky Luciano and Lepke Buchalter of New York, Abe Bernstein of Detriot's "Purple Gang," Moe Dalitz of Cleveland, and Max Hoff and Nig Rosen of Philadelphia. All agreed to cooperate in controlling national organized crime under mutually equitable regulations.Very shortly afterwards,”Boo Boo” Hoff was displaced as "King" by Nig Rosen, backed by the New York mob.Harry Rosen would emerge as the dominant force and make alliance with all of his competition.By this time Rosen became a member of the "Big Seven" aligned with the Philadelphia's factions.

Harry was one of Philly's dominant mobsters and he earned the nickname "Nig" as he once said "I was dark so they called me NIG".Rosen made a lot of money and kept a lot of mobsters happy through out the country. His influence extended to Washington,Baltimore and Atlantic City. Between 1930's and 60's Philly's O.C. was rulled by the Rosen mob a jewish gang with strong irish and italian components.

Arnold Rothstein,Rosen’s close ally, was a big player in the bootleging business and deep into the drugs business as well. Rothstein's interest in narcotics was strictly for wholesaling. He would need a network and help from other mobsters coming from different towns,to sell the drugs and the rum running and bootlegging market already in existence would serve as their pipeline. A lot of mobsters showed an interest, guys like Meyer Lansky and Lucky Luciano in New York together with New Jersey,Charles "King" Solomon was ready in Boston and even mobsters in Detroit, Kansas City and St. Louis ,as well as Harry "Nig Rosen" Stromberg in Philadelphia.Rumours are that even the Torrio–Capone mob was also interested in Chicago. During the mid-1920s,Rosen was involved in the drug business together with Rothstein and Meyer Lansky and was one of the biggest heroin importers. Most of the heroin came from England,France and even Japan. For example in thouse times in England,London there was a big population of jewish gangsters, meaning it was easy for Rosen and the rest of the American jewish mob to make connections.

During the 1930s, Rosen,Meyer Lansky and another famous mobster, named Harry Tietlebaum worked on expanding drug trafficking operations in Mexico and also finding other alternative routes.By the late 1930’s,a lucrative heroin network had been established from drug traffickers based in Mexico City to major cities across the United States including New York, Philadelphia, Miami and Los Angeles as well as Havana, Cuba.Rosen ran a nationwide narcotics ring that imported over 50 kilos of heroin a month that made somewhere around 50 million dollars a year.Harry "Nig" Rosen became a major organized crime figure on the East Coast. He remained to run the gambling rackets and the drugs business in Philly and also the government corruption.Rumours were that Rosen was operating from the local republican club.By the late 30’s and early 40’s Rosen was the puppet master in Philly controlling the mayor, the police department and the whole town of Philadelphia .Busniess was booming and till the mid 1940’s the Narcotics Bureau has stockpiled tons of heroin in the Treasury vaults.During the 40’s one of Rosen’s best underling was Samuel”Cappy”Hoffman a known drug dealer and a murderer.Hoffman was in partnership with Rosen in many gambling operations and drug businesses.

With all that cash,Rosen expanded his business on every field. In the 1940’s the Sweet Valley Improvement Company in Wyoming was formed to build a dress factory. So rumours were that during the 50’s it was sold to Harry Rosen and that his partner was Gaetano "Tommy" Lucchese better known as "Three Fingers Brown". However, a nationwide strike of 100,000 workers over 8 states by the International Ladies' Garment Workers Union in 1958.Even in the face of threats by The Nig” and "Three Fingers Brown" the strikers persisted in sitting on a sidewalk, blocking access to scab workers, and were arrested for it. The factory was closed for almost a year. Following the strike, the business was re-sold.

In the 1950's the Kefauver Committee named Rosen as the organized crime czar of Philly and the East Coast. He and his lieutenant, driver and bodyguard William "Willie" Weisberg, were named as dominant racketeers involved in the numbers racket under testimony from police superintendent George F. Richardson.

During the early 60’s Rosen was arrested and effectivly disrupted the once known “French connection”.Rumours are that Rosen was one of the brains of the Marseilles-Monthreal connection.Millions of dollars were transferred through anonymous Swiss bank accounts.Once the heroin reached the U.S. most of it was sold to the New York crime families and then distributed it as far south as Miami. With the arrest of the financier of a major drug ring, the Bureau of investigation reached a “big” success.Rosen was convicted of violating federal narcotics laws but he received a suspicious sentence of five years and a fine of 10,000 dollars,a ridicolous sum for a big boss like Nig Rosen. In the mid 1960's Rosen retired to Florida and was suceeded by his long time partner and long time member of the jewish mob Willie Wiesberg.Wiesberg had close connections with Angelo Bruno and the italian mob. Also as additional info Harry “The Hunchback” Riccobene did work for Rosen as a youngster.Harry Rosen died in 1992??? as old man in Florida.

If any1 has some additional info on Harry Rosen because theres not much info out there or maybe found some errors in this story(for example Rosens birth date and i think ive got the wrong year on his death)please contribute. This article is completed from various sources and infos that can be found on the internet.
