http://www.philly.com/philly/video/BC897450508001.html here is some pics of maria in george's vid. I remember she got caught up in some of her brothers tax problems.....something about a house i think Joey put in her name or sold to her for $1. Joey owed the IRS money and i think they tried to take the house from the sister. Sound familiar? I'm pretty sure it was something like that. After Joey was convicted on the armored car job the IRS taxed him on the 350k he made off the job. Not sure what the current status is of Merlino and his IRS problems but i doubt the guy ever paid them a dime.

The IRS is worse then the mob guys.....they never stop coming at you.

Brother's Tax Problem Puts Home in Jeopardy
By DAVID CAY JOHNSTON
Published: May 28, 1995

AT first glance, Maria Merlino's fight to keep her Philadelphia house seems like just another case of faulty tax and trust planning.

In a finding filed this month, Judge Edna G. Parker of Federal Tax Court recounts how the home was bought and transferred among Merlino family members, and what the flaw was in the transactions. But in truth, if Maria Merlino's brother, Joseph, had just paid taxes on his proceeds from an armored car robbery, she wouldn't be battling the Internal Revenue Service now.

And unmentioned anywhere by the Judge is that Joseph Merlino is the son of Salvatore (Chuckie) Merlino, the former underboss of the Scarfo crime family who is now in the witness protection program, according to the Philadelphia police. The younger Merlino is described by Federal prosecutors as engaged in an especially bloody war for control of rackets in Philadelphia and Atlantic City, a war they said included a wild rush-hour shooting on a freeway two years ago. The intended target, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, was John Stanfa, who is about to stand trial for murder and racketeering and was identified in an indictment last year as successor to Nicodemo (Little Nicky) Scarfo in the Philadelphia mob.

For all the people who think their family financial matters are messy, try following the Merlinos' tale. In 1986, Ms. Merlino and her brother agreed to buy a family home for themselves and their mother, Rita. Ms. Merlino did not qualify for a mortgage because she was unemployed and had a poor credit history, according to the judge's finding. The family paid $100,000 in cash, and arranged a $25,000 mortgage to cover the balance of the $125,000 purchase price.

The home was purchased in the name of Joseph Merlino. On the advice of a lawyer, Fred Levin, title was transferred to the mother and then to a trust with Joseph as trustee for Maria and another sister. In December 1988, Joseph Merlino gave his one-third share of the trust to his sister, Maria. The fair market value of the house was $130,000, and the title was conveyed for $1.

Here's the rub. Mr. Merlino and two associates stole $352,150 in an armored car robbery in 1987. In 1990, he was convicted, which made him liable for income tax on his share of the loot. Over the years, the amount of tax he owes has swelled because of penalties and interest to $139,964.

Judge Parker found that the title to the house was transferred fraudulently to keep the house beyond the reach of Federal authorities. Because Joseph Merlino never filed a tax return for 1987, his tax liability arose on April 15, 1988 -- before the house was transferred to his sister. And because she did not pay her brother for the house, Judge Parker concluded that the transfer was fraudulent.

In a partial victory for Ms. Merlino, however, the judge held that she was not liable for the full $139,964. Her liability is $43,000, equivalent to the value of Mr. Merlino's one-third stake in the house at the time of the transfer, plus interest.

Mark E. Cedrone, Ms. Merlino's lawyer, said he was pleased that the judge limited his client's liability but would still seek a reversal. "Her brother didn't even know he was a suspect in the armored car robbery when he transferred his interest in the house," Mr. Cedrone said, arguing that the transfer could not have been fraudulent. "And my client is no Mafia princess. She's goes to work every morning as a legal secretary at one of the most prominent law firms in Philadelphia. The finding is really unfair."

Lol, now that I think about it, I find that hardly shocking flamingo.

I know a guy from Philly that frequents the restaurant I work at. I've asked him about Joey, his only comment is his hot wife. Oh, and I've always heard she's Korean. She sure as hell doesn't look it.

Rinick says he did not kill man
The convicted drug dealer testified in his defense. He is accused of murder in the death of a reputed dealer.
By George Anastasia
Inquirer Staff Writer
South Philadelphia wannabe wiseguy Billy Rinick told a jury yesterday that he had nothing to do with the murder of Adam Finelli, a reputed drug dealer found shot to death behind the wheel of his Cadillac SUV in the early morning of Oct. 31, 2001.

But Rinick, who took the witness stand in his defense during the second week of the high-profile murder trial, sent the courtroom buzzing when he dropped an underworld bombshell that had nothing to do with the Finelli murder and sounded more like part of a script from an episode of The Sopranos.

The day before the murder, Rinick said, he drove Deborah Merlino, the wife of jailed mob boss Joseph "Skinny Joey" Merlino, to a women's health clinic in Maryland, where she had an abortion.

"She was cheating on her husband with a guy from New York, a football player," Rinick said. "She had gotten pregnant... . She didn't want South Philadelphia to know."

Rinick blurted out those details after Assistant District Attorney Edward Cameron questioned him about a pair of sneakers he was wearing in a surveillance photograph taken in Maryland.

After the slaying, police recovered a sneaker that prosecution witness Michael Focoso said Rinick was wearing on the night of the shooting. Rinick denied that the sneaker in the photo matched that sneaker and testified about the trip to Maryland.

Rinick, who was convicted earlier this year of cocaine trafficking, was the target of an investigation by the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Drug Task Force when the surveillance photo was taken.

Agents apparently had tailed him from Merlino's home in South Philadelphia to Maryland that morning, taken photographs, and followed the couple as they drove back to Philadelphia.

Neither Deborah Merlino nor her lawyer could be reached for comment yesterday.

Deborah Merlino had testified for the prosecution earlier in the trial. She told the jury that $86,000 in cash found in a shopping bag in the back of her bedroom closet during a Dec. 6, 2001, drug raid at her home belonged to Rinick.

Yesterday, Rinick said the money was Merlino's but acknowledged that he had told investigators at the time that the money was his.

"I felt bad because her house was being raided because of me," he said.

During the early-morning raid, investigators found Rinick hiding in his underwear under a bed.

Rinick testified yesterday that he was not hiding, but that he was reaching under the bed for his prosthetic leg when investigators burst into the room.

"I always sleep with it under my bed," Rinick said, who lost part of his leg in a motorcycle accident several years ago.

Rinick, confirming earlier testimony from Merlino, said he frequently stayed at her home to baby-sit her two young daughters.

The children's live-in nanny "only worked Monday through Thursday," Rinick said. "I would stay on weekends and baby-sit when she would go out with the guy from New York."

Asked on both direct and cross-examination if he had anything to do with the murder of Adam Finelli, Rinick said, "No, I did not."

Authorities have said that Rinick killed Finelli in order to steal the cash that was later found in Merlino's closet and because he thought Finelli was an informant for the Drug Enforcement Administration.

"I didn't need his money," Rinick said at another point, claiming that he had $350,000 in cash hidden behind a Jacuzzi in his home on South Camac Street.

The money, Rinick admitted, came from drug trafficking. Asked by Cameron where the money was today, Rinick replied: "I guess it's still behind the Jacuzzi. You guys didn't find it [when the Camac Street property was searched]."

Focoso, an associate of Rinick's and Finelli's in the drug trade, testified earlier in the trial that he was present when Rinick pumped four or five shots into the back of Finelli's head.

Focoso said that he was sitting in the passenger seat of Finelli's Cadillac SUV and that Rinick was sitting in the backseat when the shooting occurred.

Focoso said that Finelli had stopped the vehicle near the corner of 18th and Jackson Streets and that the three of them were talking when Rinick unexpectedly pulled out a gun and opened fire.

Focoso said he was stunned by the shooting but said Rinick told him, "Come on. Let's go. He ain't driving no more."

The two then fled, Focoso said.

Closing arguments in the trial, which began Oct. 17, are expected today. Rinick, already serving a 30-year sentence for his drug conviction, could be sentenced to death if convicted of murd

Sure, morally she was wrong. I just don't think that makes her not nice per se.
Anyway, after screwing around on her husband, and getting pregnant by another man, she's lucky she's alive today.

i think the statements like that by rinick are false, Rinick was a piece of shit how can ya believe him. Later on Rinick got his ass kicked by some muslims in prison, which Joey probably contracted it out to.

First off...shes beautiful. I don't think anyone can take that away from her. Second...the cheating you cant really comment on unless you know her situation or walk in her shoes. Plus it's a bit hypocritical to look down on only her for cheating. Last...about any nasty disposition she has, she's a product of her environment.

You dont have to be nasty to people, I dont care who they are. Take Uncle Joe for example, one on the nicest guys, treated everybody with respect.

Kathy Chang is from the same enviroment and she is a sweetheart. Johnny's Chang's wife.
