January 13, 2023 — The mafia crime families in Chicago and Philadelphia are making moves and money in Kansas City, according to sources familiar with the situation, teaming with K.C.’s Civella crime family in rackets in and out of Missouri.
The Kansas City mob today is allegedly run by John (Johnny Joe) Sciortino and Peter (Las Vegas Pete) Simone, a pair of incredibly-connected old-school wiseguys that know what’s best for their bottom line, whether that means letting outsiders come onto their turf or not, sources say. Sciortino, 79, and Simone, 77, head a small, tight-knit organization insulated by a group of trusted buffers and advisers.
According to three separate sources, the relative of a high-ranking member of the Chicago Outfit makes frequent trips to Kansas City and even keeps an apartment there, running messages back-and-forth between bosses in Chicago and K.C. The Outfit-Civella joint venture portfolio is alleged to consist of stolen goods, drugs, construction and strip-club shakedown rackets, two of the sources say.
Pete Simone oversees the business relationship with the Outfit, per these two sources. Simone and Sciortino both know several of the current Chicago mob shot callers dating back years, all the way to the time in the 1970s and 1980s when the two crime families were skimming Las Vegas casinos together.
Another two sources claim Philadelphia’s Bruno-Scarfo crime family is doing a series of white-collar rackets with a so-called “younger generation” of the Kansas City mob, a group of guys in their 30s, 40s and 50s who probably won’t ever see a button but is helping the Civellas stay relevant in the 21st century.
Philly mob’s reputed acting boss George (Georgie Boy) Borgesi allegedly linked with a few of these younger K.C. gangland aspirants while he was doing time for racketeering in federal prison during the 2000s, sources say. Borgesi, 58, is childhood best friends with Philly mafia don Joseph (Skinny Joey) Merlino, who controls the Bruno-Scarfo crime family from South Florida via Borgesi and others, according to multiple sources on both sides of the law.
