Vincent C. (Vinny) Papa Sr.

Vincent C. (Vinny) Papa Sr. - 10/17/20 08:36 PM

During the Mafia’s 1960s-1970s heyday as top dog in the importation and wholesale distribution of heroin into America, one man stood out among all the rest as a first among equals.

His name was Vinny Papa...and this is his story.

You guys keep this up and I might learn about these big city guys.
I just can't relate to people I've never heard of let alone never met.
I guess it's only natural to be more interested in the Mob guys that I hung out with..
I'll stay open minded and we'll see if you can further peak my interest.

Just so you know, Papa is the start of the "Babania Boys"

The groupings of crews who controlled 95% of all the powder coming into NYC, which in turn meant all the powder coming into the country!

In their era, nobody handled more, or moved it better than the mob!.......... so stay tuned fellas.

With all due respect you've got no shot of converting me into having the kind of interest most of the other member have in big city guys.
I don't live my Mob life vicariously thru research and hear-say. My personal experiences with real Mob guys are good enough for me ;-)

Just read this bad ass article done by NYMafia.. Do you guys believe he was going to make a deal or was it just propaganda to get him killed why, I ask this is because there is an article which mentions Giuliani supposedly leaked info about Papa Sr as an informant, who was going to give important names to have his time reduced. Then NYMafia mentions one US Attorney Thomas Puccio that Papa provided evidence. So, wouldn't he have been put into protective custody being the largest heroin dealer with so many important people involved with his organization such as police and government? Also, do we know what information was given to Attorney Puccio?

Second did the Lucchese have him clipped or was it Sperling out of fear not wanting Papa to talk?

I guess, I'm asking this because why would Giuliani not take him up on exposing all these other possible people to see how vast this organization goes?

In retrospect I believe Papa hadn't given up any wiseguys or street guys, but had only offered up several dirty cops who had helped him access the Property Clerks Office of the NYPD where the heroin and coke were stored. Remember, he stole hundreds of pounds and replaced them with bags of flour. But thats still ratting in the eyes of the streets. And a rat is a rat is a rat, regardless of who you may be ratting on.

And I think Herbie Sperling seized on that and had Papa clipped. I think there may have existed a major rivalry and envy in the street as well (I'm projecting here). So there was no love lost there between them to begin with.

If he was informing on police, (even bad ones) he must not have been too well liked by the cops after that. Maybe some cops made it known they didn't like him anymore.

I totally agree Fleming. And I don't doubt that some higher echelon LE may have actually placed him at Atlanta in general population so that he'd be exposed to danger. That is very plausible.

That makes sense what both you and Fleming are saying about Vinny. What a shame seemed like a guy that could do the 20+ but giving anybody up your done and a rat he was then. We all know Sperling was not to be messed with he had his right hand guy Louie Mileto taken care of.

Do we know how much time his son Vinny Jr did? I ask because, I couldn't find him in the federal locator search. I see he became a broker for a number of years in Queens.

What a shame what happened to his cousin Michael and his wife and unborn child. Why would they kill her and her baby that to me is crossing a line? I really don't know the whole story behind that....

I didint realize that Vincent Papa was the uncle of Jerry Papa, the rogue leader of the Rampers. I just never put two and two together. Hm, learned something new.

I'm not certain about it, but I believe he was related to Mikey Papa from Queens, not Jerry.

He was related to both Gerry Papa and Mikey Papa who were cousins.
