Yes the Colombo’s were on to him . The deal with Lefty is he was not making big money so the Pistone knew he was a big guy but was a brokster per say.

So it made it easier for the fed to get him liking the money and every time he would hear from other guys that you better watch that guy the fed came up with more scores or he did a job or something to put Lefty at ease .

I find it interesting that Lefty was giving a choice to go with either Sonny Black or Massino. Had Lefty gone with Massino, the history of that family would be completely different.
