Who are some guys that got into the life at 40+? - 12/04/19 10:02 AM

Most guys join the mob when they are in their 20's, but has anyone got an example of someone who got involved with the life when they were older, say 40+?

It's very rare that someone become involved in the mob after their 40 y;the only example that know is Joe Ligambi from Philly was born in 1939 that was sentenced for cigarettes smuggling in the 1970s.

Uncle Joe Ligambi didnt get involved until his late 30s early 40s. He had zero criminal record in his 20s and the majority of his 30s. He had one small cigarette smuggling pinch in his mid 30s.

haha. i thought uncle joe was child hoods friends with the merlinos. angelo bruno never wanted to open the books. just because they wernt made men doesnt mean they werent involved in the life. im betting ligambi probaly started taking bets in his teens and laid off money to some older connected book. chuckie merlino was with scarfo when he stabbed the guy to death in the dinner when he was really young im thinking ligambi was probaly around way back then to

you have to clarify the question. is it like some guy who never knew about the mafia and somehow joins in his later life? im gonna assume all these guys know about it since they were kids. some just dont become inducted members for one reason or another till there 50 or 60, there that old guy in springfield mass hes been waiting to be inducted into the genovese since the 70tys and he was on tape saying he always goes back to jail before it could happen hes like 70ty now/ its like the guys life mission

Just because someone didn't get pinched until they were in their 40s does not mean they got into crime at that age. They may have been smart enough to keep a low profile. (And very lucky)

Criminal records are not a very reliable source because guys can just be good at not getting pinched. Likewise if a guy has a criminal record in his 20's that doesn't mean he was hooked up with the mob back then.

As I was saying to furio, criminal records don't indicate when a guy got hooked up with the mob. Joe could have just been good at not getting pinched, which is actually true, he is good at not getting pinched.

To clarify the question; who are some guys that went on record with a family at 40+. Not necessarily inducted, just went on record after the age of 40.

Yeah Rooster doesn't count because he was on record for decades. He didn't get inducted until his mid 50's because he is a moron.

I believe the Genovese family tends to wait until guys are older to make them. They make a lot of men in their 60s and even 70s.

I believe that Al D'Arco was well into his fifties when he got made, and he had a very fast rise afterwards.

He most likely had mafia connections by his forties, but then again everyone has at least tenuous mob connections by the time they're that age.

This thread reminds me of Joe Pesci's arc in Goodfellas.

God Christopher Moltisanti was impatient.

Nay, the competition to get made in the Genovese family is fierce so some guys get put back until their 60's. Remember they can only induct new guys to replace dead members and two extra guys can get made at Christmas.

It's not like the DeCavalcantes were the competition is only a few dozen guys.

D'Arco was another moron who had been a connected guy since his early twenties but only got made when he was fifty years old. Just a fucking shit earner like Rooster.

We must remember that to be "made" should be an honor reserved to the best wiseguys. That from the 1980s the wiseguys sons was made young is an another thing.
What is the source that say that Genoveses can only replace dead guys plus 2?
In the Pogo chart on the 5 families inductions in some years the genoveses made 10-20 guys a year.

What is the source? Those have been the rules for the last 100 years.

The Genoveses were down 40 made guys during the late 80's, in other words they could have made 40 guys in one ceremony if they wanted. They don't have to induct a new member as soon as a old member dies, they can do it at time of their own choosing, which could be months or years.

The obese Cuban fed was like 40+ when he infiltrated Gambinos. How dumb were they to think that this random fat guy came from nowhere in his 40s with loads of jewels and money to kick up lol. And loads of time to hang around like he ain’t got a family or a job.
The capo he got with think it was Greg something reminded of feech lamanna from sopranos. The said capo was in the photo at Westchester with Carlo and Paul castellano

Yeah that's right, the Cuban guy went on record with Greg when he was 49 or 50 years old.

Same thing for Pistone. In 1976 a a person that nobodt know called Donnie start to hung around the mob circle saying that he is a jewel thief and he has hot stuff to sell, after six month found a mobster that was so greedy to don't be suspicious on who was this man and why he had suddenly appeared.
Jack Garcia (The obese Cuban) did the same thing and come to the same result, also it was not the first time he had infiltrated a criminal organization.

Pistone had a made member from Florida vouched for him (most likely Dara), to the Colombo family after six months with that crew. They were greedy but a couple members of the crew gets pinched by the local cops, unrelated to Pistones work and for half a day he sits there with them while they check him out as a couple members accused him of being an informant, not a cop. There are always guys in their 40s and older that finally get involved with a family, but they already were criminals themselves or legit business men who now has a mobster as a silent partner for protection or any problems with the unions. It's not as uncommon as you think.

Luigi Tripodi got involved with the Stanfa mob in his 50's and then his lawyer argued that it was just a mid-life crisis. Stanfa brought him in, made him, considered making him underboss (before he promoted Joey Chang) and made him capo very quickly for a guy who hadn't been involved before. But the Stanfa era is a bit of an exception as he was bringing in just about anyone to rebuild the family and fight the Merlino faction (I mean John Veasey went from construction worker to associate to soldier to capo to government witness in 5 1/2 months)
