Why was Anthony "Tough Tony" Anastasio spared?

I've always wondered; After the death of Albert Anastasia; Why did Carlo Gambino spare his brother Tough Tony and let him keep the Brooklyn waterfront operations? There's been many cases of brothers being murdered just for being related. Et. Pasquale Eboli and Thomas Eboli.

Was it because Carlo liked Tough Tony or was it more lucrative to keep Anastasio around? Was Tough Tony ever forced to retire at some point? Would love some feedback.

As is usual for gangster bios, there's a lot of speculation about Tough Tony but not much hard evidence. The most logical answer to your question is that Tough Tony was a great earner through his waterfront rackets--you can never go wrong in Mobdom by following the money.

Lots of sites say Tough Tony, fearful that Genovese was going to whack him, talked to the FBI a year before his death in '63. There's no hard proof of that. Genovese arranged for his brother's murder and had Gambino installed in his place. If Gambino let Tough Tony live, why would Genovese want to whack him?

I’ve wondered this too, especially looking at the fate of both the Mangano brothers not that long before in a similar type coupe on the same family

Or maybe they had a chat with him like they done with the surviving billoti brother years later

My guess is that he was a huge earner and wasn't directly looking to retaliate for his brother's murder.

Makes sense - money comes first I suppose

That's a good question; Why did Tough Tony think Genovese wanted to have him clipped? If Genovese wanted to have him clipped; He would have had it done in 1957 when his brother Albert was whacked. Gambino and Genovese let him live... As most of you stated; The money Tony was bringing in; kept him alive.

If i remember correct they wanted scotto to be schooled by he, so he could take over. Also think tough tony became a CI in the 60tys. I think gambino and them found out an shelved him instead of killing him

Gambino must of had respect for him to not have him whacked.
