Found this interesting article on Denaro and how he relayed messages via an associate's 5-year old daughter.

I wonder what evidence they had to convict and sentence her for being a made member of a Sicilian Mafia Family and being a woman.

She probably took part in the decisions her brother made, but I don't know if she could participate in Mafia meetings.

Yea , but the article specifically states she was a "made member". Taking part in decisions doesn't exactly make her "made" in the logical sense. But it seems she was convicted mostly because they proved she was "made". I'd just like to know what literal evidence they had to come to that conclusion. Making decisions for her brother whose on the run, wouldn't exactly be enough to call her a "made member", at least in my opinion. It may be possible that they had word either through informants or the evidence which showed she actually took part in a making ceremony and acted in collusion with other bosses on the Island.

She's considered a donna d'onore by the other bosses, but there's no ceremony for women.

Prosecutor details fugitive Mafia boss
Matteo Messina Denaro family nabbed, assets seized

(ANSA) - Rome, November 23 - Several members of the family of fugitive Cosa Nostra boss Matteo Messina Denaro have been arrested and assets have been seized as part of the current strategy to capture him, Palermo Prosecutor Teresa Maria Principato told the parliamentary anti-mafia commission Wednesday. Messina Denaro, 53, has been on the lam since 1993. Interpol has said that the Cosa Nostra boss, whose home fief is in Agrigento, is among the 10 most wanted criminals in the world.
"We've arrested almost all of Messina Denaro's blood relations - his sister, cousins, in-laws," she said. "I thought this might spark a reaction in the man but he's not normal. He's very cold." The prosecutor said confiscating over a million euros' worth of assets was a tactic aiming to hit the mobster's "deep attachment to money". Italian police in April arrested seven people in the countryside around the Sicilian city of Agrigento in what they said was a continuation of a "scorched earth" policy aimed at trapping the elusive head of the Sicilian Mafia - a tactic that won't work with him, the prosecutor warned lawmakers today.
Police said alleged bosses and accomplices, key parts of a support network for the fugitive Cosa Nostra chief, held meetings in the fields, walking around to evade possible surveillance devices.
Messina Denaro has not been seen in public in more than 20 years.

How is this legal? Just arresting family members to try and catch someone?

I also don't understand why they mention Agrigento as him 'home fief', I was under the impression that he was from Trapani. And what's up with the left pic, do they think he might've pulled a Catlyn Jenner?

His hometown Castelvetrano is in southern Trapani close to the border with Agrigento he has a big influence in both provinces. They can't just arrest his family only the ones who are part of his organization and broke the law.

The Italian government want him desperately, so I wouldn't be surprised if they got some of the family members on trumped up charges. They feel so embarrassed by him being on the lam for such a long time..
