Are the books closed within the 5 families or do they just make members as and when they can?

Read a few posts about when the booked were opened back in the day, I suppose they had plenty of guys to choose from then.

No, they haven't been for over 40 years and they won't be again.

The size of the families have been stable for the last 20 years so yes they're replacing the dead members.

Dead they can make 2 guys every year and replace how many dead guys. There still making 10 guys a year in family's. 2 here 4 there ect. I wish it came out were and how the genovese made 12 guys in one night that's a lot of sponcers and shit must have been a big place xmis party.

If there is someone worthy of the button, they'll get it. There's no set in stone rule, like, ok it's closed now for 6 months. It's a dynamic process.. They may just be closed for an extended period due to no viable upcomers. Which lately, has been the norm. I mean, they're not really "closed" they're just not gonna induct some guys for shitty reasons. As long as the machinery is running right, that is.
