Scarfo Sr.s roots - 02/24/15 12:19 PM

Someone had asked abput Scarfo Sr's Father recently and I can not find the thread that it was posted in but on page 245 of The Boardwalk Jungle (Ovid Demaris) it say's that Phillip Scarfo became a member of the Genovese Family bossed in those days by Lucky Luciano, his brother in laws Joe Buck Mike Buck And Nick Buck (Piccolo) were initiated into the Philadelphia Family. And that two Cousins Frank and Pasqualino Scarfo were members of a New York outfit called the Sardeno group, which had its roots in Calabria and dealt in narcotics.

I believe it was me.....My avatar was Mrs. Scarfo but I changed it.....I NEVER heard any info on his dad, thanks!.....Any idea what rank his dad rose to? Sounds like soldier by the wording........If my memory serves me right, I dont even think Leonetti talked about his dad in Mafia Prince......He frequently mentioned his mother Catherine!

Yea your right. I'm surprised he didn't talk about Scarfo mob roots. That's the first mob book I read. Very good not just cause I'm a Philly guy but great read.

They always said he was with the Genovese but I never seen anything to prove it.
He would get people coming down with NY tags on there cars all the time, but it looked like blood family.
He was a quiet guy and handy always fixing something (having all the atps)I am pretty sure he worked up at one of the old hotels.
We would see him walking toward the boardwalk and back all the time. I think it was the Ambassador or Traymore hotels comes to mind. He was a card guy loved to have card games.I think he passed in the 70's
We did not know or did not care about if you were connected back then ,not like now !

Leonetti did talk about Scarfo's father in his book. He said he was "100% legit" and "was never involved in the mob or anything illegal". He said Philip Scarfo was a laborer at a hotel in Atlantic City.

He also said that Scarfo looked down on his own father because he was legit and that they weren't close because of it.

Yea, Leonetti says in Mafia Prince, Scarfo thought his dad was a smuck because he was a working guy and not a gangster.

I stand corrected!

I read that entire book in 2 days and I wrote my post by memory.....I just re-read the 2 pages he mentions him....But now there is a conflict, the first poster said some author mentioned he was a Genovese Guy but Leonetti said 100% legit.

Hmmm!....Maybe when Leonetti, grandfather was left for dead in the 1920's, Philip Scarfo may have been slightly involved but after the death, he took his family away from NYC.

http://mafiamembershipcharts.blogspot.co.uk/2015/02/genovese-family-membership-chart-1930.html?m=1

Bill Feather shows Philip Scarfo as a soldier from 1930's--1960's
AND
I even see Carmine Persico Sr. In this same list. Also a soldier in the Genovese family.

Interesting. Would explain Scarfo's connection to the Genovese aside from just being good friends with Bobby Manna. But I don't see why he'd say that to Leonetti about his father. Perhaps Leonetti is fibbing on that one, maybe he went inactive at an early time and made himself a working man for the later part of his life.

Italian/Sin: . Comes from old snitches that had it wrong. those rumors have been around for years... like I said I never seen proof of any of it.As far as that comment that senior made was a generalization remark about working stiffs.I don't think he would ever speak about his father like that.Alot this is Philip painting senior as a monster or more of a monster....

What comes from old snitches? His dad being a Genovese or being legit? Leonetti does say that Scarfo felt any man who worked a legit nine to five was a scrub basically, in general. But he also goes about to specifically say the thing Scarfo said about his dad.

Genovese , And also about Carmine in the Genovese family(comes from rats or people talking)back when the LE really had no clue. Yes Phil would say that ,even if Nick said it in a different way Phil would twist it. He is trying to paint sr. to be the worst and him the abused kid. I am telling you Phil has always got what he wanted and always landed on his feet .
