The Madison crime family was the smallest. - 12/18/14 06:59 PM

The Madison branch of La Cosa Nostra was started by Carlo Peter Caputo with permission and backing of the Chicago Outfit. Caputo was originally a capo in the Milwaukee Mob. The family was started in 1940 and only had five made members, not two members, like the American Mafia site tells us. However, they were definitely the smallest crime family in La Cosa Nostra history.

Carlo Peter Caputo - boss from 1940-1970 - originally a member of the Milwaukee LCN Family - owner of Carlo's Restaurant and Rosemary's Restaurant - born around 1903 in Palermo, Sicily - passed away on November 09, 1993 in Madison, Wisconsin.

Joseph Aiello - underboss from 1940-1970 - not sure when he was born - passed away on November 07, 1970 in Madison, Wisconsin

Benjamin "Benny" DeSalvo - capo from 1940-1964 - born around 1889 in Palermo, Sicily - passed away in 1964

James "Jimmy" Schiavo - soldier from 1940-1970 - not sure when he was born - passed away in 1970

Vincent "Vince" Troia - soldier from 1940-1970 - born on June 05, 1896 in Palermo, Sicily - passed away on January 31, 1973 in Madison, Wisconsin

Matthew Pellitteri - Associate from 1940-1967

Fellipe Candella - Associate from 1940-1961

Jack Wilson - Associate from 1963-1970

Sam Paul Buscemi - Associate from 1948-1969

Very interesting. Any more details, addresses of bars, busts, etc? Why did they go dead in '70?

I wish the term LA Cosa Nostra would fall out of favor and everyone just revert to Cosa Nostra. Rant over...

Someone said this was just a glorified crew. I don't know if I agree. To be a family meant that the national board of directors recognized these people as autonomous. I think if you are a branch of a nation wide narcotics conspiracy, you need to install a boss (over that branch) so that you can completely control that branch of the operation. A lone capo or a bunch of soldiers operating in a distant city alone cannot manage themselves like a group of guys answering to a boss.

Stern49, Fellipe Candella and John Annacone were both made in the 1950's and believed to be the only two made in the family. The rest were transplants when Caputo created the family. Joe Alello was born around 1901 in Bagheria Sicily. Vito Aiello, cousin to Joe, is listed as a member of Milwaukee family, but was with the Madison family, making the family total membership 8 made men.

Associates besides the ones posted above are or were, John Candella (Son of Fellipe Candella). James Schiavo Jr. (Son of James Schiavo), Charles Capputta (Sometimes spelled Charles Caputa), Tom Capputta, Vincenzo Caruso, Cosmo DiSalvo (Son of Benedetto "Benjamin" DiSalvo), Benjamin "Benny DiSalvo (Nephew of Benedetto DiSalvo) Danny Miller, Isaac Harris.
