I was filing away some research material, and came across two of the most bizarre items:
(1) When Albert Anastasia was murdered in 1957, he was carrying this business card as Sales Representative for Convertible Mattress Corp. It's real-- the mattress company confirmed his employment in the NYPD files.
(2) An NYPD DD5 report also found that Anastasia was 4 months behind on his mortgage for his Fort Lee, New Jersey house.
At first I thought he used the mattress sales rep. job to show legitimate income. But Anastasia already owned a garment factory in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, and was carrying around thousands in cash. At the same time, Anastasia was losing heavy gambling on the ponies.
I still can't figure out the mattress sales rep. job. Was it just another cover for legitimate income? Or did he actually need the money?
