I was filing away some research material, and came across two of the most bizarre items:

(1) When Albert Anastasia was murdered in 1957, he was carrying this business card as Sales Representative for Convertible Mattress Corp. It's real-- the mattress company confirmed his employment in the NYPD files.

(2) An NYPD DD5 report also found that Anastasia was 4 months behind on his mortgage for his Fort Lee, New Jersey house.

At first I thought he used the mattress sales rep. job to show legitimate income. But Anastasia already owned a garment factory in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, and was carrying around thousands in cash. At the same time, Anastasia was losing heavy gambling on the ponies.

I still can't figure out the mattress sales rep. job. Was it just another cover for legitimate income? Or did he actually need the money?

I doubt very much Anastasia was running around selling mattresses. Perhaps it´s an old business card he kept and flashed around to pick up broads? smile

It was most likely just another cover for legitimate income. I think I read about this, but can´t remember exactly where. Was this in your book?

Lol. "I'm a mattress rep. babe"

No, I didn't mention in my book. In retrospect, you're right it is probably just another cover for legit income.

He really did sell some mattresses-- the mattress company verified that he was one of their better salesmen.

Wasn´t he a subject of a IRS investigation around the time of his death? He did some time in the mid 1950s for tax evasion, if I remember correctly. I think he may have learned a lesson from that and decided it was a better thing to be able to show that he did have a legitimate income, even though in this case it was a no show job.

This isn't a surprise at all. Under United States Law all Mattress are to be made in here in the United States. Would you want your mattress being fumigated at the port of newark?
Rock-away Bedding/Mattress was bought by sleepys which is the same company as 1800 mattress/mattress giant.I think you guys get what I'm saying. This is another incident where O.C. Jewish Gangsters/Italian took over a legitimate industry.

Yeah, you're right HK, he was under an IRS investigation. It makes sense in that light. He just had to worry about that mattress tag of not removing under penalty of law.

alex, I just ordered your book. that's strange that Anastasia
was behind in his mortage payments. you would think he had enough money to buy a house cash.

his family was making millions from the docks alone, can't
figure out albert Anastasia hurting for money, maybe hiding it from the Irs, but, you can bet he had it.
