My Grandad once met Charlie Richardson the guy Fraser worked for, it doesn't matter how much people ass lick the Krays the Richardsons were the real deal

Low level enforcer and notorious bullshitter, nobody denies he was a tough guy but he was no gangster. All these British gangsters back then were completely overrated, including the Richardsons and the Krays.

He was a villain, who maimed plenty of people and was accused of murder a fair few times, stood trial twice for murder actually.

Was involved in protection, debt collection and other crime, and was involved in an organised crime group so I think that makes him a gangster!

Served every day of the 42 years in prison with no parol and never grassed in his life..

As for other names and firms from those days being over rated, I would have no doubt their legend has grown over the years as people like enhancing a story, same could be said for many of the old LCN in America I am sure

But these guy like the Richardsons, Krays and other firms were well respected by the LCN at the time, that tells me all I need to know...

I think there were one or two serious English gangsters from Frankies era ie Joey Pyle snr,Charlie Wilson, Wilfred Pine and The Richardsons who were makin money whilst rthe Krays were tryna become celebrities.

Spent half his life in jail and never ratted anybody out. Not many left like that on either side of the pond.

I met Frankie Fraser in a bar on the falls road,belfast around 2002/3 .He'd done time with a guy from belfast and they stayed in touch ,amongst the guys he'd done time with from over here he was respected and considered to have no fear both in and out of jail but especially inside were he was very anti authority and led many riots against oppressive prison regimes. Me personally I thought he was a gentleman with some very funny stories he won over a tough crowd. As for his lies etc.. Frank was cashing in on his celebrity much like that other ejjit Dave Courtney ,no real gangster go's on tv and gloats about it ,Frank's criminal career ended when he got shot in the head in 91, so he cashed in and gave the public what they wanted but no one can doubt that he was a very serious character in a time full of them so RIP Frankie Fraser ,a man's man.

I did laugh when Frankie was asked about his early days and he said he never forgave the Germans for surrendering as he was doing so well thieving around London during the blitz

Frankie was the only one to call Dave Courtney a grass when it came out Courtney was a registered informant.All the other old school bought Courtneys bullshit but not Frankie. When he was shot in 91 police asked him who done it he said Tutankhamun.

His stories were wild at times, but I never doubted he has been involved in some stuff back in the day.

@Yogi

I see you're from Newcastle. I read a book on Newcastle gangland called "Fog Upon The Tyne". It's mostly about the feud between the Conroy, Sayers and Harrison crime families. The story at times was ridiculously over the top (especially when it came to the Harrisons). It also sometimes felt like it was written from Conroy's viewpoint and it makes the Sayers family look bad. But when I read other reports on them it seems to me that the Sayers family are bigger, better connected and more organized criminals than the Conroys are.

The Sayers family are the top boys up here these days without a doubt. Conroy was a handful back in the day but is more interested in doing TV documentaries and writing books. The Sayers run most things and whilst they will always have rivals I would not want to cross them.
