Raymond Patriarca Sr. Questions - 08/04/14 10:36 PM

What's up guys, I've done a lot of reading on the Patriarca family and as you know Ray Sr's reign was really intriguing. The Father Fagin scandal, controlling the whole region more or less uncontested for about 30 years and he sat on the Commission. However, there are a couple little things I've never been able to get cleared up and hope someone can help me out.

First, I've read several times that Patriarca Sr. was made in NYC. Does anyone know who he was made with? I read that he had connections with the Genovese, and his underboss Henry Tameleo was made with the family that eventually became the Bonannos. Obviously Payriarca Sr. was made way before Valachi flipped and the families got those titles so the answer to this may be unclear.

Second, does anyone know anything about where in Italy his family was from?

I appreciate any insight fellas. Links to testimony, FBI files, etc would all be helpful as well.

Thanks a lot, Bugsy. Interesting to read his conversation with Bianco since I had always read that he worked as mediator in the first Colombo War. His perspective on making guys and the books being closed was cool to read as well.

He was so mad his place got bugged he wanted to whack his brother who was surprised to find illegal bugs planted by the feds. He had a 30 yr reign. Guess in 1980 he was sick he made bianco his acting boss and that pissed off the anguilo brothers in Boston since jerry was official underboss. And he told the captain in Worcester he couldn't kill jerry over a golf course outburst think it was iacone. He died in bed lot of other bosses didn't. His legend still is big in my area and there was a few genovese guys out here but they were with him and them I read. He was tight with Vito genovese his fellow neo.

Given that Hoover denied the existence of the Mafia and was in charge of the FBI until 1972 - I wonder how he felt about these reports on the mafia. I guess he just ignored them.

That's misleading. Hoover denied the existence of the Commission and that the mafia was a nationwide conspiracy. He acknowledge that organized crime and gangs existed. The feds were busting mobsters since the 1930's

I know several bosses who reigned for 20+ years without doing any serious prison time and died free men after 60+ years in the rackets.

It would have been open season if Anguilo became boss. He was not well liked it seemed and yes he told one capo that if Jerry didn't cool it the next time he could kill him. Keeping Anguilo happy was the smartest thing Patriarca could do because it kept him rich. The only way we would have seen Anguilo on top is if Zannino still backed him and Russo went along with it. I'm not sure if Zannino would have had his back or not if he was out when Ray Sr. died and he backed Junior.

Does anyone know if J.R. Russo and Zannino were close?

They definitely respected each other. I believe it was Zannino who referred to Russo as 'a genius with a carbine'.

Zannino is a very intriguing guy. If anyone has any info on him I'd appreciate it as well.
