Since release, he sounds like a solider. Part of this might be because the new guys don't want a gotti loyalist in the top part of the family.

According to D´Amico´s friend Irving Hershkowitz, they both attended New Utrecht High School. So I would guess that D´Amico grew up in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. He came up under Gambino captain Olympio "Lilo" Garofalo who held sway in that same neigborhood in the 1970s and 1980s.

Yes- this makes perfect sense. I think he had his nose so far up Gotti's ass that it contributed to his nickname

What is the real truth about olympio?was paul's crew split up between him and gaggi,or did he became capo od d'aquila's crew in the mid 60s after cologero dicarlo? One source states the fist one another the second

Re: Jackie D'Amico - 08/30/14 10:48 AM

I just read on fbi mafia charts 1930-1950 that somebody named edward was the brother of olympio..was edward garafala related to him or something?i only know of a guy that married sammy gravano's sister.

Re: Jackie D'Amico - 08/30/14 10:51 AM

The truth is that Garofalo had his crew and it wasn´t split with Gaggi. I assumed his crew was when I made a post on Gaggi´s crew some years ago. But I was wrong. Garofalo´s and Gaggi´s crews were seperate ones.

He was a JG favorite. But he made his money post-Gotti. Jackie and John were good friends but "bad" for each other, if you know what I mean. They shared a bad gambling jones. And gamblers are drawn to each other just like dope addicts are. I don't mean that to be offensive, but it's true just the same. They lost millions gambling together.

His name is always thrown in with the "brokesters".. Which I don't think is fully true. To me there is 2 kinds of brokesters... The ones who just aren't capable of making any money, then there is the ones who can earn a shit ton but spend more than they make. He was for sure in the second category.. Ran a huge book but was a horrible gambler..he had hal irving..

@Bronx:

Jackie's a big craps guy. He used to go on casino junkets that Taylor ran up in Connecticut. A.C., Foxwoods, Vegas, they even took one to Paradise Island once. They hooked up through Braciole.

Talk about a lunatic gambler. If you believe the Feds (and ordinarily, I don't), Taylor gambled over 80 million one year. That's exaggerated, of course, but he was definitely one of the biggest gamblers in the United States. No doubt about that.

He died this past summer. He was only about sixty. And here's the preachy part: His daughter could barely pay for his funeral. The guy had a warped sense of humor. His obit, and the prayer cards at his memorial, both read: Bet with your head, not over it. True story lol lol.

Just to make clear, him attending NU high school is according to D´Amico´s friend Irving Hershkowitz. I don´t know if he grew up in Bensonhurst but I would assume he did IF he went to that school.

Garofalo´s crew was active in Bensonhurst but also, it was active in Lower East Side, Manhattan. By "active" I mean where they hung out.

That's because the power base ended up in Brooklyn. Were the Gambinos as big in Manhattan as the Genovese family? No, but they were still there.

And it's exactly the opposite with the Westside guys. Their power base was always in Manhattan, so everyone assumed they had no presence in Brooklyn. Well, that was bullshit, too.

Allie, Punchy, Albert, and all those guys were Brooklyn based. Were they as big in Brooklyn as the Gambinos? No, but they were still there.

You follow me?

Of course. That was my entire point. Just because their presence wasn't as visible in Brooklyn as the Gambinos, that doesn't mean they weren't there. But the Genovese power base was always in Manhattan. Uptown to be more specific (and that crew eventually evolved into the current Bronx/Westchester faction, where the power base remains). Vince was the exception, but Benny loved him---and Benny was an uptown guy.

Eighteenth Avenue, specifically from 75th Street on down, though not exactly enemy territory, wasn't overly friendly either, as DiLeonardo related it. The area was rife with Sicilians, some of whom were made members of the Gambino family. An assortment of them, however, belonged to the Sicilian Cosa Nostra, mainly the Inzerillo family who'd fled the murderous Toto Riina and his Corleonesi. Dual memberships were not allowed. Those seeking to be made in America needed to be "released" from their Sicilian crime family.

As DiLeonardo lived in Bensonhurst near 18th Avenue, he was the face of the Gotti administration. (Jackie Nose, mainly a Manhattan gangster, probably didn't know Bath Beach from Brighton Beach -- and wouldn't even be able to locate Brooklyn, meaning the entire borough, if given a map to consult, Mikie Scars said. "I used to call him Christopher Columbus," Mikie Scars said.)

"Jackie knows nothing about the men in my area and the goings on,” Scars said. "He thinks 18th Avenue is new-found territory." Still, DiLeonardo has some fond memories of his former partner. "Jackie was a very personable guy. He can talk to you for 12 hours over coffee."

He added: "I was very loyal to Jack, more than he knows. That’s a story for another day."

"Full" of them? No. There's not an a neighborhood left in New York City that's "full" of Italian nationals (meaning born over there).

To clarify, I'm talking about Italian-born residents. The numbers aren't there. But there are obviously plenty of pockets of Italian-Americans in all of the outer boroughs, and predominant on Staten Island. Forget Manhattan. Just a few leftovers down Knickerbocker.

My grandparents were born in Italy, not my parents. But I grew up in Belmont, with my grandparents in the same building for some years, so I learned to speak their dialect as a kid. And I spent eighteen months in Lauropoli, Cosenza, Calabria as an adult, so I'm a little different. Most second generation people born here can't speak a sentence.

Italians took great pride in learning the American language years ago. All four of my grandparents arrived here as ADULTS, and they all spoke passable English by the time they all passed away. Nothing like the "new" immigrants, who refuse to adapt. Yet the fucking Liberals bow down to their demands, even the ones who hate us. You know, like some Middle Easterners. I said it. It's the fucking truth.

That was my point. It's still the Gambino power base out there. But as far as other Italian-born residents, forget it. The Italian-Americans are running away to the suburbs. Italians aren't immigrating nearly as much. Chinamen and Pakistanis. Ten years. Tops.

I think with the middle easterners that move here, and this is from my experience working with them, is that they love the US and the country and what it stands for, they just do not like the American governments foreign policy. I think that's a key difference.

Anyway, I'd appreciate a PM from you. I had a question I wanted to run by you.

How about the Italians that came here then went to war against there own in WW2? Think they liked the policy?
Tell those dirty fucks to stay where they were born then. I don't trust none of them.

And I'm a liberal who is now 35 and sees things differently. Any one who votes one sided or better yet argues one sided on every topic cause of a party is a fool.

Sorry for derailing the thread.

I'm 56 next month. I'm a Centrist. I was a registered Democrat for thirty years. But even then, I never voted for the party, it was for the individual. And today? Fuck them all.

Re: Jackie D'Amico - 09/02/15 12:22 AM

Hey now, was not trying to start a fight.

I agree, if you don't like America, then fuck off.

I just think you can love the country and what it stands for and not love everything it does. And it's not just about immigrants.

And trust me, when you say "Fuck them all," I COULND'T AGREE MORE. Fuck them, fuck them all. Fuck Washington, fuck Obama, fuck Congress, fuck the lobbyists, the bankers, and the rest of the people sucking ordinary people dry.

My bad for derailing the thread, though, I hate political arguments here but I can't help it sometimes. I'm a hypocrite when it comes to that, I can't lie.

Each idea should be judged on its own merits. Towing the party line is akin to following certain (see above) cults in principle.

Now THATS derailing a thread cheech wink

Edit: GO JAYS!

Re: Jackie D'Amico - 09/02/15 01:03 AM

Maybe bronx or PB will be able to answer this but did any of John or joe gambino's kids get made? Is it Sal's kid Tommasso who got made out in LA?

Just read the Scars interview from a few days ago with Ed Scarpo, says when he got 18th ave after john Gambino went away he schooled 'Heavy Tommy'

This is from the interview below.

Mikie Scars and Jackie Nose taking control certainly improved the family's finances, but there were other factors. The section was far from being a smoothly purring machine. "The kids ran wild after their fathers went away." Because of this, DiLeonardo and D'Amico took some of them under their wing, Cali among them.

Cali initially got closer to D'Amico, eventually driving for the mobster. DiLeonardo found himself practically raising one of the many Gambino offspring -- several of whom were named Thomas.

Scars's Tommy was nicknamed "Heavy Tommy" because he was overweight. "He became my 'project,'" DiLeonardo said. (There also was a "Curly Tommy," a "Tommy from LA" etc.)

"We grew these kids into the life," DiLeonardo said.
