Reputed Trenton mob figure catches a break with jail term

By George Anastasia INQUIRER STAFF WRITER
POSTED: August 18, 2006
Reputed Trenton mob figure Anthony "Tony Gags" Gagliardi caught a big break yesterday when a federal judge in Philadelphia ignored sentencing guidelines that could have had Gagliardi spending the rest of his life in prison.

Instead, Judge John R. Padova imposed a 15-year sentence on Gagliardi, 54, who was convicted last year in a cocaine-trafficking case.

"You have been a career criminal in the real sense of the word," said Padova, noting that Gagliardi had been convicted 34 times for charges ranging from petty theft and robbery to aggravated assault during a lifetime of crime.

But Padova said Gagliardi's medical and psychiatric problems and a need to balance fairness with deterrence had led him to conclude that a guideline recommendation of 30 years to life was excessive.

Gagliardi suffers from several disorders of his central nervous system, has a heart condition, is bipolar, and has a "character pathology" that probably cannot be treated properly in prison, a psychiatrist testified during a two-hour hearing Wednesday.

Padova urged Gagliardi to take advantage of medical and psychiatric treatment in the federal prison system and said it might be his only hope for leaving prison alive.

Gagliardi, who has already served about two years, would be eligible for release in about 10 years. Since the abolition of parole, federal prisoners must serve at least 85 percent of their sentence.

Padova said he was convinced that a 15-year sentence would prevent Gagliardi from returning to crime, telling the defendant: "You're either not going to be around, or you'll be too old and too sickly to participate in any criminal activity."

Assistant U.S. Attorney Barry Gross, one of the prosecutors in the case, had argued for a 30-year sentence, describing Gagliardi as "the poster boy for career offenders."

"At some point society has to say, 'Enough is enough,' " Gross argued at Wednesday's hearing.

But Padova was apparently swayed by testimony about Gagliardi's health. The judge also pointed out that Gagliardi's main accuser, drug dealer-turned-cooperating witness Steven Carnivale, had been sentenced to 90 months in prison, and that two major drug traffickers convicted as a result of Carnivale's cooperation had been sentenced to 10 and 20 years.

Gagliardi was convicted in May 2005 of two counts of drug dealing after a weeklong trial in which he represented himself. He was assisted by lawyer Donald Manno.

After yesterday's sentencing, Manno said Padova had exercised "the kind of discretion" the U.S. Supreme Court had in mind when it overturned strict sentencing guidelines and again allowed "judges to be judges."

The case against Gagliardi grew out of a drug investigation into Carnivale launched in 2002 by the Organized Crime Section of the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office.

The case was transferred to federal court, where Gross and Erik L. Olsen, the chief deputy attorney general in the organized-crime section, served as co-prosecutors.

Big Vince still looks like he's in pretty good shape for a 60 or 61 year old guy. Wonder what he's up to these days....besides banging the bleach blonde?

I think there are other message boards better suited to your posting style, marine. I suggest you check them out while you're on vacation from here. You've been warned before about flaming others but you insist of ignoring those warnings. Take two weeks.

He has a hot wife/Gf she looks kinda trashy but then again look who shes with. After years of abusing steroid I would think he wouldn't even be able to smash unless taking some male enhancing drug. I bet he drinks a big protein shake after sex instead of having the infamous cigarette.

You might want to switch to decaf, or maybe a little more fiber in your diet. A regular person is a happy person.

Would it be fair to say since we're hearing Sonny Mazzone is a captain nowadays, that he's either acting for Staino or inherited the South Jersey crew?

George Who changed it up?

I am not quite sure about right now today but Sonny has always been a south Philly Guy. He use to operate during the day right near my old apartment on 13st. Ive hung with Sonny a few times due to my cousin. Ive said this before, hes not the most likeable. Hes always got a puss face on. Anyway, maybe things changed recently but I know he was out of South PHilly when UJ was running things and before that. Maybe hes doing Staino's pick ups now that some of UJ guys are away and people saying he is acting capo or whatever you wanna call it...idk. But he lives in a Condo near the Eagles NovaCare complex. Haven't seen him around the city as much as I use to so maybe there is something to it. But its definitely not been for a while.

George Borgesi is a South Philly guy. Most of the guys are....or were. But Borgesi isn't changing anything. Lucky if they allow him back into the main fold that lunatic.

This is talk from the beach last summer,we all still go to the same street as we did back in the day.And he is or was covering for Anthony cos as far as people down here that are in that circle,he is the man down this way and Sonny may be acting?(I guess they are covering for him ,while he away)

Don't know ,just people that are friends with them ,or brothers or sisters down here in summer. And live here giving a heads up..

And i said George cos he will go after something if the guy is in the penitentiary.(He don't sit)They did him pretty good(When there is no organized crime, It is unorganized crime)
The Philly family 1990 till present..

But if you guys say George" is on the out ,then maybe he is...

I don't know what George is going to do. But as far as Sonny, he rarely is ever at the shore. He use to always be at his after hours club back in the day. His Ex wife has a house in Margate..or soon to be ex wife. He rarely goes down there.

And Staino was more South Jersey like washingtown twp type of are. But maybe he was at the shore to but Sonny at ths shore is rare. But like I said, I don't know what hes been up to this last year.

And what beach are you talking about? Longport or Margate? I know where the Ligambis sit in Longport on 33rd street.

And i think you don't get what i am saying.
When they say down here that somebody has south Jersey .
You will not see them on the corner, those days are gone,It is a figure of speech.
They or he controls the area or has the most things going on....

(But some how i think you know that)

Re: South jersey Philly mobsters - 04/09/14 04:46 PM

No I get you. I am in Margate all summer (wknds) and south philly all winter. But there are different guys in different spots. I don't think Staino was running down to AC himself in the winter weekly. I plan on moving to the Washingtown twp area which is basically little south philly with Grass. I use to sit with Phil's kids on 33rd steet about 10 years ago. I still take a walk down there in the summer to see others. But I sit about 4 blocks from Cedar grove Ave....Play ball at Union school yard on the mornings I aint hungover in the summer

What? I don't think any one family ever ran NJ, there are so many families there between 5 NY families, Philly family, and the Elizabeth NJ family. But I understand that at one time Philadelphia had a big presence in Newark NJ. (maybe still do, I don't know)

Dont pay any attention to cookcounty hes just a wannabe troll. Ya the philly north jersey definatly isnt what it used to be, its down to just a few made guys, although scoops is still pretty respected and has good ties with NY.
